Gosh, this show ruins me
Fem presenting Yami and Yugi just because 🔥 10 year old me would be proud
we've all seen the pattern where a trans woman comes out and then some kind of accusation arrives to absolve everyone of the need to examine why they've suddenly started hating her. it's relieving to feel like you have a justified reason to have already hated the tranny
it occurred to me that the bizarre and nonsensical idea that trans women transition to escape accountability, as if such a gambit could ever work, serves to offer a convenient explanation for this pattern that allows us to continue hating the tranny guilt-free even after we notice the pattern. the reason the transition and the accusation arrive around the same time is because her entire transition is a disingenuous gambit to escape the accusation! now, not only do we have permission to misgender her, we can take her transition itself as further proof of her guilt!
in fact, maybe every trans woman is hiding something. maybe I'm not transmisogynistic at all, I'm a Good Person after all! when I have a bad feeling about a trans woman, it's because she's a bad person, and I'm just really good at sniffing out Bad People!
I think the truth is, most people know deep down that they're transmisogynistic (we all live in this world and we all absorb its messages), and they feel guilty about it. they want to be Good People who Aren't transphobic, and they will go to great lengths to convince themselves they already are
so if they can't place why they hate trannies without admitting to themselves that it's just transmisogyny, they need to construct a reason. when an excuse is offered to them it's a life raft. it doesn't even need to be a good excuse. to borrow from another transfeminist on here, something as flimsy as "she said this route wouldn't be very traversible in a wheelchair and I interpreted this as her saying she was glad we didn't have a wheelchair user with us" will suffice
I'm really glad the anime kept this in. I was worried they might not. This is the turning point for I'm in Love with the Villainess, where it becomes clear it's not just a silly isekai comedy, but a story that also earnestly discusses queer issues.
It's still fairly unusual for the kind of yuri that gets adapted to anime to outright have characters say "I'm gay", so the fact Rae frankly discusses her sexuality here is refreshing-- but on top of that, the show goes on to directly challenge homophobia.
Rae's behavior with Claire before this has been inappropriate (and they really should have toned it down in adaptations to make this convo work better, but alas) and that is acknowledged here. However, Claire moving away from Rae specifically because Rae states that she's gay is what's pointed out wrong, and the stereotype of "lesbians just can't control themselves and will creep on every woman they meet" is pointed out as wrong. This is a common stereotype that persists pretty much everywhere--the idea that it isn't "safe" for women to be around lesbians--and it is valuable that it's called out here. Gay people aren't more likely to be predatory that straight people, and that's something everyone should get through their heads.
What's more, the idea of "oh she's not gay or bi she just happened to fall in love with a woman" or "it's just a love that transcends gender" isn't a super common stereotype in the US and a lot of other countries, but it is one that pops up constantly in anime and manga, because it's seen as somehow "more okay" for a character to kiss girls if she goes out of her way to say it doesn't make her a lesbian or bi/pan. (In the novel Rae does internally mention that bisexual people exist, btw, but she's just not one of them).
So Rae bluntly saying "no gender does matter to me. I'm a lesbian. I'm only attracted to women" is refreshing. "Oh she just fell in love with that one special girl, no reflection on her sexuality whatsoever" being called out as it's own form of prejudice is a pretty big deal.
They hated on her but she was onto something
This is literally a point that Julia Serano makes in "Whipping Girl." She points to the fact that marginalized people have to understand the privileges and struggles that those who are held above them in society have, and their own marginalization, better than the people above them in the social heirachy do in order to survive.
Women generally understand the role that men and women play in patriarchy better than men generally do, and trans women in general understand the role that cis women, cis men, and ourselves play in cissexualarchy(? for lack of a better term) better than cis women and cis men generally do. Because we have to in order to survive this world. Cis people don't have to understand it at the level that we do, because its made for them.
More from that one post
Was there ever any consensus about what she'd change her name to? I was thinking about it, and the funniest possible answer is she doesn't.
The post referenced up top calls her Panthera, which while I agree that not changing her name is the funniest possible answer, I do think Panthera is exactly the kind of name she would give herself, given that it objectively fucks.
you can experience life altering devastating emotion and then your cat will throw up next to you & look at you like does this help ?
What if there was a show or anime based on Idw sonic, like anime based on manga? Hihihi, this thought inspired me to make such anime-style screenshot art (?)^^; I decided to make them based on this riders arc in the comic because I like it X3 Hope you will like it^^;

reminder that the books themselves also suck ass actually. there's an entire plotline endorsing slavery. the one character who advocates to end slavery is bullied and made fun of. the one slave who doesnt like being enslaved is bullied and treated as an outcast. the bankers are the picture of racist stereotypes of jewish people. the one asian character is named fckn Cho Chang. the worldbuilding SUCKS. fuck harry potter and fuck rowling. stop giving her your money.
