Sher's enthusiasm was endearing and Hannah found a warm smile creeping on her lips while watching the other woman move around in an animated haze. It was hard to resist matching her energy. There would be other days to grieve. Today was for Joy. "Who are you, Jewish Santa Claus?" Hannah teased as she took the gragger and affectionately ran her fingers over the familiar pieces.

Hannah gingerly sat the gragger down and began to search through Sher's suitcase. She found a lot of cute things, bright colors and feathers and beads. It was a pair of bunny ears that caught her attention. She could work with that! "June loved Zootopia. I bet I could find a few things around here and give her a decent Judy Hopps costume."

"And there's this bath robe in the suite I stayed in. I could make some lamb ears and be the mayor." June would love pretending to arrest her since Belleweather turned out to be the big bad of the movie.

“I guess i am now!” Sher laughed, finishing her song but still playing the music. There aren't many moments lately where joy is excused and if she can get people to forget how bad things are even for a night it’s her duty to do so. “See? We don’t need much and we can let the imagination take over the rest of it. Especially for kids who can let their imagination run wild” it was nice to know she helped make this purim a special day for a child who would benefit from having some structure and stability in these uncertain times. She didn't know much about zootopia so she asked “is there a cat character in that movie?”.

At first, when the music started, She had as well, jerking in surprise and skittering toward her hiding place. After a few moments, though, drawn by the music and her curiousity, she slowly kept out from behind the green house, head poking out first to watch before eventually she was just sat crouching by the door and watching and listening with rapt attention. It'd been so long since she'd heard music, and it called to that part inside of her that thrived through it and always had.

Seeing aggie relax a bit as  she was listening to the music sher finally spoke up “I didn't mean to startle you, I just like coming up here from time to time and playing, it helps me relax and think.” she looked at the beautiful colors of the sunset feeling inspired to play a tune that described her feeling in that moment. This is the first time in a long time that she allowed herself to take in the world around her. She’s been so busy surviving that she almost forgot to appreciate those moments. “If you want to join me when I come up here to play, I won't mind.”

Eric shrugged half-apologetically, half-helplessly, as if he couldn't help being so awesome, but soon his smile turned friendlier and softer to show that he wasn't serious. Coming back to the Wexley was the best idea; he was grateful for people like Sher and having them around when the world had gone so crazy was everything that mattered. A bit of sweetness to the bitterness surrounding them.

Hearing a little update from her, Eric mouthed an "ouch" - if the apocalypse wasn't enough of a fucking bad luck in itself... He took a sip and, as he swallowed, rushed by a thought that just hit him, made a sound as if he just realized something. "Hey, but you can write and record a whole apocalyptic album now. I'm sure the world will love it if it ever gets to hear it. So? Lucky Lucky and lucky you?" Eric grinned and took one more, uninterrupted sip. "Well, that's what my brother says about his dog, so... Maybe pets really save our asses, even indirectly. As for Rio himself... We've got matching bruises." He chuckled. "I've been worried 'bout Zach but maybe he's... doing better than I thought."

An apocalyptic album, now that’s something that’s so far out of her wheelhouse she wouldn’t even know where to start, but it made her chuckle. “How would I even go about writing apocalyptic folk music? All I can think about is metal and that’s not my style.” the stereotype of the suffering artist using their suffering as inspiration was definitely not her, none of what’s happened in the past few months inspired her. 

“Pets really are something special but doom is in his own league, I was always more of a cat person but he is convincing me that dogs are as good” she thinks about how the only reason she’s even able to take care of lucky is because cats are relatively low maintenance compared to dogs. “Well that just adds to my theory that you are the same person” she chuckled “Yeah I don’t have siblings myself but if i had i would probably never stop worrying about them. I'm glad to hear he’s doing well. I've only been away for a few months but I feel like it’s been years, so much has changed. I can't help but feel like i'm kind of a stranger here”.

Devan isn't sure what he expected. He had explained his point, and perhaps it is a few months too late, and perhaps he should have involved her sooner, but the past is what it is, all he could give her now is his word, his promise. And if Sher knew anything about them, the one thing would be that their word is their everything; both a promise and a threat. So listening to her, all he can do is nod, slowly, his eyes narrowing only slightly.

As she finishes her reasoning, there's no anger, there's no upset, there's simply acceptance. He had given her an offer, he had given her his word, his devotion, and she had rejected it. To Devan, there's nothing left to give her. "Well," he says finally, taking a deep breath, "can't say that ain't disappointin'." The words are spoken as though commenting on a cloudy, overcast day.

"Glad ya found your people, Sarah." There wouldn't be any additional apologies. He'd told her he'd die for her if need be, and she didn't want it. Perhaps, ultimately, that would be for the best, something incredibly sentimental that, if they were being perfectly honest to themself, they just couldn't afford. So he stands up and shoves his hands into the pockets of his worn jeans. "Hope they keep ya safe."

With that, they head off towards the exit. It's late anyway, isn't it?

their words cut through her like a sharp knife, deep down she hopes she's not making a mistake pushing him away. as they get up and walk away, she has to suppress the desire to call out to him and tell them the truth. so she just stares at him as they head to the door and finally she says quietly "night" as the door closes behind them and she's alone again left with only her thoughts. 'i was doing fine being alone up until i met them, I'm gonna be okay' she tries to convince herself as she goes back to her game of solitaire.

❓if you could change one thing about your life right now, what would it be? And you can't choose getting rid of the chompers.

"i would love to be able to go visit central park again safely. the wexley is great but other than the animals and the garden it's so detached from nature i feel like a part of me is missing. i also really miss my house plants"

"it's almost too good to be true, a safe place in the middle of the apocalypse with people who care and love each other enough to risk their lives for each other. it makes all the horrible stuff so much less horrible."

"I've heard so much about sada from ashton and i know he wouldn't lie about that so I'm staying far away from her"

"Charlie, just because i don't think she's even capable of lying"

❓ say there's a crisis, who's the first person that pops up that you'd try to look for for help?

"Ashton, he is very reliable and competent and i trust him implicitly to have my best interests"

"yes there's history, we were in the same refugee camp when it all started and we worked together to lead the survivors after the military left. after years of being single i never thought i'd catch feelings in the middle of the apocalypse but it happened, and they reciprocated those feelings. but then they disappeared without saying a word, not only breaking my heart but leaving me to handle the camp which failed miserably. i was sure i would never see them again but then they showed up here and all the feelings came flooding in again. so do i still have feelings for dev? yes but i think i'm better off not showing it, it's a privilege i can't afford right now."

"that will have to be mal. usually when i talk to people enough it makes them feel comfortable opening up to me, but no matter how many times i talked to them while they helped me carry cat kibble to feed the ally cats, they would never talk back. it's like that vampire movie with the creepy guy who can't read the mind of that girl. they're immune to my charms and i want to know why"

somewhere else? it took her a second to process what sher was asking— but yest, she'd been away for nearly a year. "i was actually on my way home from work." and she'd made it, really she had been in the lobby. but, that didn't matter. it was the past now. "i lucked into finding the beach, huh?" she smiles, as though that was the short of the whole story. the most that she needed to say. but, she doesn't ask back— her mind is already fixated on the wound that's being presented.

"burns will hurt, even while they're healing." the skin had to rebuild itself, cell by cell, stronger for the work it had to do. "unless it went deep but—" she stops her movements, finally examining sher's arm. many people came into the er with burns of varying levels, and for most the treatment was the same. but, not everyone was looking to try and pick up an instrument again, so she's careful. "this does look normal, more or less."

she stood back up, trying to think of where clean gauze and ointment would be now that mr. wexley had moved so much around. just because it was normal didn't mean that she couldn't treat it all the same. "lucky's great. that's cool of you." the cat's tour of her place had already skipped her mind until sher brought it back.

"i never had time before." that was a fair way of phrasing her life, he schedule. "although i think someone suggested i should get fish." she's still moving, trying to locate anything at all that would be helpful to sher now. "i don't even know where i'd find any now."

“Oh we are the lucky ones, chompers aren't the only thing that can hurt people out there and having a doctor around is invaluable” she isn't one of the people who will go and fight raiders but the ones she cares about are and it was a huge relief to know there's someone who can take care of them. Hearing Ruth's diagnosis sher couldn't help but smile, the pain didn’t stop her from playing but it’s good to know it’s not gonna get worse “that’s really good news! Thanks again for seeing me on such short notice, I owe you”.

“Honestly there’s probably more fish swimming in the hudson river now than there were before but i guess you need to catch one small enough to be a viable pet” this made sher think about the fact that central park is probably teeming with life right now and what she wouldn’t give to walk around in it. After getting patched up sher picked up lucky and stood up “but if you ever feel the need to pet something and hang out you should come over. Me and lucky both love visitors”.

at the age of 25, to her husband, it was whatever but she thought that's how everyone felt.
