Other things that hurt my heart:
Stories where Sephiroth comes back and has to face things after all he’s done, but facing them as himself, where everything’s canon other than the idea that what we see in canon is all what Sephiroth ever wanted, and that he’s never going to find any sort of healing…
Sephiroth doesn’t know that Genesis is still alive. He probably thinks that after telling him to rot, Genesis just wasted away from degradation.
He likely thinks that he killed Zack. His last memories are of attacking, and more or less winning, and by the time he next sees Cloud, Cloud has the Buster Sword.
Never, in all of canon, has he ever known the full and actual truth of his origins, and the fact that he had (and has) a human mother who loved (loves) him.
He’s never been in a position where someone, or some force, is not somehow trying to use him for their own ends. First Hojo and Shinra, then Genesis and Hollander, then Jenova. He likely wouldn’t know what to do with true freedom. Not counting the desire to lash out and see that those who’d hurt him hurt back, because after that, then what? What then?
