i've noticed that quite a lot of people are severely undereducated about aroace , aromantic , and asexual people , even allies and lgbtq people themselves
sure , to my knowledge we're not directly focused on by homophobic groups ( thanks for the clarification @/plum-petunia !! ) . but society is still extremely against the mere existence of those who don't feel certain types of love .
i was venting to a friend about being aroace and she asked me " why don't you just not be aroace ? "
people say " aromantic / asexual / aroace people can still date !! " and then refuse to engage with the nuances of an ace/arospec relationship
so many people i've told about being aroace all say " well , you're not gonna be aroace forever , right ? "
hell being asexual didn't stop being considered a mental illness until 2013
the only representation of aro/aspec people in media are cold villains or are "innocent" and "pure" , and even THAT rep is taken away
romance is viewed as better than all else . every conversation is about romance . nothing sells without romance
people can't conceptualise a relationship with romance without sex . people can't conceptualise a relationship without romance with sex . people can't conceptualise having no desire for a relationship with romance or sex .
society doesn't treat us as people worthy of respect . people dont care enough to represent us properly .

there's a couple of things ive been wanting to state my opinion on for a while now ive just been too lazy and forgot until a saw a post talking about some of the same stuff and it reminded me lol. this is really long sorry it's the consequence of me neglecting to talk about any of this for a while.. It's all piled up into one long rambling word salad. though I think it's worth reading
I do want to start out by saying that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. There's nothing wrong with having conflicting ideas with what I express here, especially because some of them I DO see where they're coming from and I respect it. This is in no way meant to attack people with different perspectives! I'm just here to state my opinion because I have the need to let everyone know what I'm thinking at all times.
First off, I've been seeing a lot of distaste for transgender Glisten headcanons for a while now. It's mostly a dislike for transfem Glisten, but I've seen a few things here and there about people's dislike for transmasc Glisten too. Honestly, it's pretty disheartening to see a lot of hatred thrown towards these headcanons, especially because, at least from what I've seen and personal experience, a lot of trans hcs are projections to some extent. I've seen people argue on both sides that it's either stereotypical, fetishized, or even homophobic to headcanon him as transgender (both for trans man and trans woman hcs).
Sure, there are definitely people out there who only headcanon him as transgender because he is gender non conforming (GNC). Whether it be headcanoning him as a trans man because he's not masculine, or as a trans woman because he's feminine, it definitely happens, but I really doubt that it's the majority. (and if they do, it very well could be projection) It's something that happens to a lot of characters across many medias, not just Glisten. Maybe I'm just not seeing it as much as other people, but I'm not seeing a lot of people headcanon him as trans for these reasons. It's a lot more rare that I see a transfem headcanon for Glisten in general actually.
For the argument that transfem glisten is stereotypical, and even homophobic, I just don't really agree with the sentiment that it's automatically bad in whatever way. Again, of course there are SOME people who make it like that, but on its own it isn't necessarily stereotypical. I do get the argument that it is stereotypical to headcanon Glisten, a feminine man, as a trans woman. And if it was for that reason with no genuine thought put behind the hc, there's good reason for discomfort there. However, I do see how people could really resonate with/see themselves in the hc as well.
I don't think the transfem headcanon really undermines Glisten's character and struggles as a GNC man in children's television during that time period. Those things can coexist. Though to be clear, I'm of the belief that headcanons, especially those that are projected, don't have to make full sense within canon. It's called a HEADcanon for a reason. Though, it's really easy to have that hc and keep those aspects of his character too. The living Toons ARE separate people from their animated counterparts. Glisten, just like any other Toon, was created and forced to have a certain personality and gender. With the newest Sprout video, they weren't even MADE with their memories, they were taught those memories and feelings. A lot of their lore revolves around the fact that they are their OWN people. It's not too crazy of a concept that the Toons, especially after the shutdown when they are able to truly be themselves, find out they're more comfortable with a different gender. I'm sure they weren't directly taught those concepts, but the Toons aren't stupid. Hell, one of the handlers is trans (Sam). It's not a foreign concept. Glisten being a feminine man in the cartoon doesn't take that ability away from him, and it's not a bad thing to want to explore that with him either.
As for it being homophobic to headcanon Glisten as a trans woman, just no? He is not canonically a gay man. None of the Toons have canon sexualities. Is he queer? Yes, he's a feminine guy. Headcanoning Glisten as a trans woman does not take away that queerness, or those struggles that come along with it. And aside from that, being a feminine man doesn't automatically make someone gay. There's nothing wrong with headcanoning Glisten as a gay man, but you can't really use that as an argument against a trans headcanon because that would be just as stereotypical as people are claiming the trans headcanons to be.
I've also seen people say that headcanoning him as a trans man is stereotypical and even fetishistic. I'm definitely biased here, but it really rubs me the wrong way when people claim this. No, headcanoning a GNC man as a trans man isn't automatically fetishistic. I do see where it CAN be, as a trans guy myself. But holy shit GNC trans people exist??? Just like how GNC cis people exist. I'm not fully gender conforming myself. I'm not really feminine, but I'm not super masculine either. If I were more physically masculine (in terms of voice, body, ect.), I would probably feel more confident in wearing more feminine things from time to time. It happens, we exist 😭. That doesn't make us any less man. And someone headcanoning GNC characters as trans doesn't automatically mean they're doing it for nefarious reasons. I just don't like seeing trans headcanons, especially from people who ARE trans, getting shit on.
Again, I'm definitely biased, but I headcanon Glisten as a trans man because I'm a trans man. It's comforting having my favorite character share my identity in that way, and I'm sure a lot of other people who headcanon Glisten as trans are in the same boat.
Also, I'm not trying to claim you have to be trans to headcanon a character as such. As long as it's respectful and in good faith, I love seeing trans headcanons. I especially love trans man Glisten hcs. It makes me INCREDIBLY happy to see. And, though I don't headcanon Glisten as transfem, I still love seeing people express themselves through their headcanons and being seen through other people's as well!

Another thing I've been seeing people talk about is Glisten's femininity within the show and if it is 'realistic' for him to exist as such within the show.
I agree with the people who get upset when people make Glisten into a woman because they think he couldn't be a feminine man within the show. There are real life cartoons that have feminine men within them from that time. It's not unheard of, and I do agree that making him into a woman because you believe he CAN'T realistically be a man is super weird.
However, I don't agree with the fact that, within universe, Glisten would be treated as evil or as a joke simply because he's a feminine man within the show. One, because I just don't believe Qwel is going to take his story in that direction or we would've already seen it. And two, it's just not something that would really fit within Gardenview. The game itself already doesn't really fit into realistic standards for the time period, so it's not crazy to assume homophobic ideals wouldn't be present within the TV show. Besides, Glisten's intro card doesn't really allude to the fact he's an antagonist or joke. Sure it says he causes issues, but it also says he stands up for what's right and for his friends. He's a caring Toon, despite his ego. He seems more so as a lesson teaching tool than the butt of a joke for the way he presents himself.
Glisten doesn't seem to be insecure when it comes to his femininity. His insecurities are rooted in something unrelated. Overall, he actually seems rather confident in presenting feminine, and I just can't picture him being treated poorly within his own show for it. Of course there could be something Qwel hasn't shown us yet in this regard; I'm definitely open to the possibility that I'm incorrect here lol.
I'm sure he faced scrutiny from outsiders (mostly parents), but NOT from the Gardenview founders or staff. They literally hired someone who's nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. If the founders had issues with queer people enough to openly poke fun at them within their show, I highly doubt they would've ever even hired Sam.
I think people just need to let go of the idea that everything within Dandy's World, especially the in universe show, is going to be 100% time period accurate. The game just straight up isn't time accurate, and that's okay. It's its own world where living creatures with human intelligence can successfully be made out of black gloop. It's perfectly reasonable within this universe that Glisten is a guy who just so happens to enjoy feminine things without being some sort of stereotype or joke. On top of that, Glisten isn't the only GNC Toon. Vee is a masculine presenting woman, and Cosmo is definitely more on the feminine side. It's more blatantly obvious that Glisten is GNC in comparison, but I think it is worth acknowledging that he isn't the only one.
also teeny tiny side tangent why the hell are there people who get mad when people depict glisten as super feminine in the way he dresses. 😭??? HE IS FEMININE how are u gonna get mad when people depict him as something he is i cant i cant

While I can’t see the founders or the workers being cruel to glisten due to how he presents himself I do think that, like you said, depending on how time period accurate it is that he would get some remarks from parents. Which honestly is an interesting thing to explore!
I’m definitely more iffy on the transfem side of the argument for glisten, specifically because it’s really hard to find out why someone headcanons him that way and without that context my hackles just get raised ig. Plus personally I’m the type of person who doesn’t really like greatly altering a characters gender from canon unless it’s like an au. Even then it’s an all or nothing type deal with me, especially with completely swapping it. When someone changes only glistens gender in an au for example to be a girl, it comes off a bit unsavory imo because it’s only being done to HIM. It feels kinda akin to changing one of the people’s genders in a ship to make it straight ya know?
yeahhhh i do see where it's a bit strange when someone just changes him into a girl for like no reason. though tbf i dont think a majority of the people doing that are necessarily headcanoning glisten as transgender. they're just making glisten into a woman for whatever reason. it's rare that i see trans woman glisten headcanons so it's hard to say. but id assume most people headcanoning glisten as trans arent just doing it for the gender swap, but rather to specifically make glisten trans, whether it be specifically for story reasons or just straight up projection.
ive seen a good amount of people swap glisten's gender into a woman without it being a trans headcanon. annnnd im not going to comment much on that because it's a whole different argument than the one i made for the trans woman headcanon + transfem headcanons in general. and it's a sticky topic and people are mean and i am scared of mean people 🥲 (this is not me throwing shade to anyone who does this, i dont think it's wrong to do so. it's just not my favorite personally!)
im more so just trying to defend well meaning trans headcanons 'cause ive seen hate(?) thrown at them as well, not just to people who are being distasteful. and of course im not trying to speak for people who are transfem. ive just seen some really stupid arguments as to why transmasc glisten headcanons are 'bad' and it kinda really hurts to see as someone who is a trans guy and hcs him as one because of that. so im just a tad worried about some of the things ive seen some people say abt transfem glistens hcs as well
