i was born with a jar full of darkness

the world told me it had to stay shut

i held the lid down hard

the darkness inside pushed back

the longer i held down the lid

the stronger the darkness became

my shoulders, my breath, my thoughts, my life

all organized around keeping the jar closed

i grew tired and weak

i was so tired that even the fear got tired

finally my arms gave way

and there was the darkness surging into view

i waited there to be destroyed,

or consumed,

all these fates the fear had promised-

nothing

i opened my eyes
