This is legitimately brilliant. Bug burndown reports (the rate at which your software team can close bugs) is a major metric for most software houses.

It takes an extra step in our part, but this is part of what makes it effective. It's not one click, one reblog activism and it hits them where they care: their damn KPIs.

just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.

This is a regular part of the display! Self-preening quickly at the base of the wings, in a way that looks nervous or habitual rather than done for any effect on the feathers, is common to see in many pigeons while showing off; it wasn't just that fellow lacking suavity.

And if the courtship prospers it's done more frequently; I've seen many pigeon pairs billing vigorously, walking round each other in little circles, with the presumptive male stopping every few seconds to preen at the base of his wings thus, often while the other one tries to stick her beak inside his impatiently ("Stop fussing with your suit and kiss me"). They sometimes even delay sex to do it, which seems counterproductive, while the other bird is crouching down inviting them, and may change her mind at any second. I think of it as something like a human nervously smoothing their hair before asking someone out. I believe it's what's called displacement activity - nervous tension or conflicting impulses spilling out in useless but safe habitual actions.

"G: Displacement preening or ritual preening

In the usual form of this movement, the bird turns its head, thrusts its bill between body and scapulars, and quickly withdraws it. It is given by the male in situations where he is sexually aroused but unable to copulate or commence the pre-copulatory billing either because the female is not yet giving the appropriate signals or because of his own apparent incapacity. That the same gesture is used in these apparently different situations suggests that it is being used whenever an impulse to bill or to copulate is being frustrated but no other positive tendencies – such as to flee or to attack – are present. It also corroborates Whitman’s (1919) opinion that this act provides auto-erotic stimulation as well as serving as a signal to the mate. It is also an integral part of the ceremony of offering to bill, which male performs before proffering his open mouth to the female.

The female does not usually displacement preen so much as the male. This is because she reacts to sexual unreadiness on her mate’s part by more intense soliciting of billing or coition, by “switching over” to allo-preening him or, if the male crouches and invites her, by mounting him instead. She will, however, displacement preen freely and often if thwarted in her sexual desire and unable to find outlet in the alternatives usually shown. Thus a hen Pigeon who considers herself paired to a human being will displacement preen as much as or more than a cock usually does."

Bedrock is having a mayoral election. One of the candidates is a violent war mongering asshole that riles people up against the lizard people. This reminds Fred and Barney of their time in the army.

Back then the father of said violent candidate was riling people up against the “tree people”. Fred, Barney, and other soldiers fought what they believed to be a defensive measure against the tree people. Turns out, it was actually an invasion, in order to kill off the tree people and take over their forest to build Bedrock.

That’s what Fred means when he says he and Barney participated in a genocide. They literally did.

(Extra fun fact, Barney adopted a tree person baby after the war, and his son Bamm-Bamm is the last tree person.)

Let’s call this strategy “doom trolling.” It’s one of the defining and most arresting properties of our current A.I. moment, and I’ve come to believe that it’s morally indefensible. There are really only two options for the intentions of A.I. companies when they engage in doom trolling. The first is that they actually believe that the systems they’re building have a nontrivial chance of producing hugely disruptive events — from destroying the economy in the best case to wiping out our species in the worst. If this were true, every reasonable ethical system would argue that there is only one acceptable response: to immediately stop working on any product that might accelerate such a future, and lobby with all of your resources to help force other A.I. companies to do the same. From a moral perspective, any other reaction would be monstrous. The second option is that these A.I. companies aren’t really concerned about these risks, and that they’re injecting these doses of unresolvable doom for other reasons. They might want to amplify the perceived power of their technology at a time when they’re setting up their initial public offerings. Or they hope their performative reports and somber interviews will help them compete for top engineering talent coming from a Silicon Valley culture that’s steeped in this type of doomerism. The venture capitalist and A.I. adviser David Sacks recently suggested that Anthropic was using fear-mongering tactics as a method of “regulatory capture,” which can impede upstart competitors. Any of these reasons would mean that these companies are laundering the anxiety of millions to improve the financial fortunes of a vanishingly small number of major stockholders. This cynicism would be equally monstrous. When it comes to A.I., we’ve become so used to this tone of helpless, stress-inducing prognostication that we’ve lost sight of its strangeness. Imagine if Ford put out a report saying that it feared its popular F-150 trucks might soon start bursting into flames, but that there was nothing the company could do about it because automotive technology was too inevitable and important to slow down.

Richard Bischof’s devices aim to make telemetry research cheaper, higher quality, and more humane

Remotely tracking animals in their natural habitats has become a central pillar of wildlife research. But on land, the process often involves fitting a collar around an animal’s neck that contains a GPS tracker and various sensors. This requires capturing the animal, which isn’t just expensive—it’s also stressful and dangerous for everyone involved. Richard Bischof, a wildlife biologist at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, sees a better way forward for this field of study, known as wildlife telemetry. He’s now building and experimenting with devices, described in a recent preprint, that would allow researchers to apply collars on animals without needing to capture them. Rethinking how we put collars on animals, Bischof argues, could bring many benefits to wildlife research, such as improving animal welfare and the quantity and quality of data collected at the same time. Science spoke with Bischof about his work and where it’s headed. This interview has been edited for clarity and length...

i’m going to an ostara celebration today! this is the second time that i’ve embroidered ferns, and i’m happy with how it turned out. i started with a darker green and integrated a lighter color as i got closer to the ends of the fronds to create a gradient :)
