      “another year, come and gone,” eris let a sigh slip through her lips as she studied the crowd. so many people from so many different walks of life, all crowded into the wallace family mansion - she’d miss this someday, when tessa was gone and she no longer had a reason to attend a shadowhunter event. brushing those thoughts aside she took a sip of her wine. “i wonder - how many of those people do you think are truly enjoying themselves?”

         “I KNOW I’m not.” His appearance through the wave of the crowd was not unlike how he maneuvered through the Institute’s hallways: ghostly. If he were to die and become a specter all he’d need to do was adjust to walking through walls, really. Severin flattened the end of his tunic against his leg, ignoring the gleam from the silver detailing where it hit the light the right way, and straightened himself out beside his bond partner. Eris. She was fearsome for sure, and even then the Shadowhunter managed to keep a polite resolve around her, as if walking on egg shells. A moment passed before he turned to her, bowed his head as one does before royalty, and offered a hand, “And I’d be remiss as well as bored if I didn’t get to ask the queen of the sea for a dance.”

she had control over her impeccable hearing but there was an irritating sound that she just couldn’t get rid of that easily. it was a child and he or she was wearing those shoes that squeaked every damn time they took a step. she was trying to ignore it while listening to severin talk about something that only god knows what. the wolf held up her hand for him to stop talking. “either we walk and talk or we go our separate ways because i’m this close to removing those damn shoes and watch it as they burn and i’m going to enjoy it.”

         “WHY NOT just remove the child?” Dark humor. Severin despised other people’s spawn --- it made sense when he was on the cusp of his own child, and even then he was sure his tolerance would only be for them. Screeching children, the general lack of discipline or penalty in their lives for behaving abhorrently, was something he couldn’t quite get used to. He nodded, raising a hand to offer her the first steps on whichever way they were going to go to get away from that horrid sound. Worse than a banshee, really. “I lost my train of thought with it, anyway. Lead on.”

     “well, that’s what netflix is for.” she says dryly, sliding a cigarette from the packet as it’s offered to her. perching it between her lips, she pulls a lighter from her back pocket and sets the end aflame. cerulean hues linger on his countenance, a mixture of annoyance and weariness in her expression. “i don’t want an invitation.” helena sighs, taking a slow drag of the cigarette. it tastes far too herbal for her liking but the burn is better than nothing. though the words are reluctant on her tongue, the admittance fights its way out anyway. “i want in. always. no invitation necessary.”

         “I DON’T think I have a subscription. Or really time to watch things like that.” He made her chuckle, an honest to god laugh erupting from his chest and dissipating just as quickly as it had appeared. On some level, on some level  he understood her desire. Not to need to be invited --- on the same level he wanted to have Evangeline in anything but his memories. Something tangible. The impossible. One long drag of his cigarette and a subsequent cloud of smoke later, he flicked the butt away and turned more fully to the woman. “Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that. And I don’t think the head of the institute is willing to bend the rules on it that much --- personally I don’t know the guy to say anything on his behalf but something tells me it’s a do as the Clave commands situation.” Severin offered an easy shrug of his shoulder, eyes darting to the entrance. “Most I can do is extend an invitation to you now. Take it or leave it.”

         ONE BROW rose, black ichor from his most recent clean up apparently oozing from the glove stowed at his belt. Evelyn Blackwell

She had been training, alone, it seemed other Nephilim had got the message to steer clear of her and her offer of sparring quick enough, and so there she was, going through routine after routine with both her trusted blade and a practice staff. At the voice, Evelyn spun on her heel, a smile pulling up at the corners of her lips as she saw her brother standing in the corner, watching her. “As surprised as I was when I heard you’d volunteered to be paired up.” She admitted, the grin turning to smirk as she dropped the staff and grabbed her towel, wiping off the excess sweat before making her way toward her eldest sibling. “Depends how quickly I can get the situation under hand.” The details were lacking, but it had been a long time since he had bothered trying to pry them from her anyway. “I’ll get cleaned up and we can take a walk?”

         “I CAN’T live in a shell forever.” Though the words seemed to sting a little, even against himself. For the year he had spent in solitude, debating whether or not he’d sell himself into a life he wholly would not enjoy, meant he had been in nothing but a shell. Still, the ghost of a smirk painted his lips as if he were poking fun at himself. When she neared he extended an arm outward, enveloping his baby sister in a brief but tight grasp, and released her just as quickly. “Take your time, Evie. I’ll be waiting out here.” He owed it to her, his patience. She had been nothing but patient with him --- though he knew how that was so very much the opposite of the spunky girl. She was always knobby knees and a missing tooth as a girl: the idea of impish and sprightly. Her moxie was admirable, and while she grew into her limbs and her teeth came in as well, she had never lost the moxie. Now she kicked ass and patience was not her virtue.

But it was with him, and for that he was eternally grateful.
