a 3x14 coda
The text had come through when she was draining the last of the coffee from her cup, after Mateo had finished his passionate treatise on the Shakespearean parallels of the first Thor movie and a comfortable silence had settled.Â
Come over when youâre done.
It wasnât the first time TK had texted her since they parted ways at the firehouse, so he knew where she was. He also knew she probably had no desire to go home to an empty apartment with nothing but bad memories and ringing ears for company.Â
She can still see those lifeless eyes staring at her whenever she closes hers; can still hear the way Cap screamed her name, wondering if she would even answer back.Â
She clears her throat and allows Mateo to pick up the check, but only if she can get the next one, and the promise of a future cup is enough to put a spring in Mateoâs step as he heads for the counter.Â
They part ways with a hug that lingers, and Nancy finds herself halfway to the loft before she even recalls putting the keys in the ignition. She probably shouldnât be driving, but sheâs pulling up outside their building before she can tell herself to turn around.Â
Maybe she shouldnât be driving, but she shouldnât be alone either. Itâs a fact sheâs well aware of, and one sheâs clearly powerless to argue.Â
She presses their intercom, and the door opens with a buzz. The elevator ride is quick, and she stretches out her tense neck and tries to pop her ears again, realizing a moment too late that the spot she keeps rubbing on her cheek is the one Cap had cleaned not that long ago.Â
Outside their door, she pauses, adjusting the bag on her shoulder. Mitchell had called Carlos from the scene before any of the 126 could even process what the hell had happened. And thank God, because if Carlos had heard that a gun was fired into their rig, well. Nancy has no desire to think about what would have come next.Â
Sheâs witnessed it firsthand enough.Â
Sheâs just about to knock when the door swings back and TK stands there, feet bare, pajamas loose, a blanket draped over his shoulders.Â
A knowing look on his face.Â
She tries to say, hey, but nothing comes out, her mouth opening and closing around words that will not come.Â
He nods, because he knows and opens his arms, cocooning her in the warmth of the blanket as he hugs her with the strength of the empathetic.Â
Pulling away just enough to close the door, he gets an arm around her back and leads her over to the living room where E.T. is cued up on the TV, a t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants sit folded neatly on a cushion, and a spread of unopened takeaway boxes is lined up on the coffee table. And there, in the middle of the couch, is Carlos, left arm already held out, just waiting for her to sink into it.Â
So she does.Â
He presses a kiss to the top of her head, and she sighs as TK settles in on Carlosâ other side. Itâs silent for a long moment, broken only by the steady sound of their breaths.Â
âChange first or eat first?â Carlos softly asks.Â
âOr gossip first?â TK teases before he yelps. Carlos must have pinched him. âWhat? I wanna hear how coffee went.âÂ
âLater, baby,â Carlos mutters, and Nancy smiles.Â
Changing sounds great and food sounds even better, but right now, the cuddle sheâs in the middle of sounds the best. Feels the best. Feels needed.Â
She closes her eyes and listens to the steady thump of Carlosâ heart beneath her ringing ear. She closes her eyes and, for the first time in hours, she doesnât see the patientâs lifeless gaze staring back at her. She closes her eyes and feels⌠not calm, but safe maybe.Â
Secure, here, with her family.Â
âPajamas, food, aliens,â she mumbles, already half asleep.Â
Carlos laughs against her hair. âOkay.â
âOkay,â TK echoes, and she sighs again, content.Â
âIn a minute, though.â
