The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.
A humble snubnose eelpout on its way to the whale fall buffet when some nearby humans give it a quick, unintrusive study:
I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widderās work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals canāt perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And thatās how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING ANT #5362 HOLD THE FUCKING LINE

Officials say that 12-16 pups have survived their first few months.
The critically endangered red wolf population in North Carolina welcomed four new litters this year. Researchers estimate that 12-16 pups have survived their first few months, which is a very big deal for a species with only 22 adults remaining in the wild.
Budget for additional wildlife crossings in the wolf's habitat offers additional hope for the species, since road strikes are currently one of their greatest threats.

Just realised I follow three different nonbinary people named Maia. The nickels keep rolling in.
I need to collect one who uses he/him pronouns, one I don't know very well, one who's slutty, and one who's really funny.
The I can have a Maia (he), Maia (who), Maia (hoe) and Maia (haha).

Rat body language is funny. Dace, the silvermane rat on the right, is furious and prepared to fight here. Extremely tense and ready to throw down.
This interaction ended peacefully. I didn't see what started it, just heard a little shriek and looked over to see this. Dace was frozen for maybe 30 seconds assessing the situation and having a little one-sided standoff. I presume Cisco nipped or otherwise did something to seriously startle her while attempting to initiate play, and Dace took it very seriously and squared up defensively. When Cisco didn't match her energy, Dace chilled out and moved on. I was at no point concerned about an actual fight breaking out.
god if there was a book of forbidden spells I wouldnāt even hesitate
Iām not Christian, I donāt go to church anymore, and my pastor died, but when he was alive Iād sometimes go to his sermons and I remember one time he said āit feels good to hate, but we know that it isnāt allowed, so when weāre told that weāre allowed to hate someone we get so excited that we forget weāre supposed to loveā, and if my humble atheist ass might borrow some church talk Iād like to perhaps submit that
Anyhow sometimes on the day to day I feel disgust or revulsion and I have to ask myself āis this a danger to anyone at all or am I just looking for something Iām allowed to hateā and a solid 98/100 times itās the latter so once again thank you pastor D

D&D has become so much more fun since it clicked for me that I'm not the character, I'm the writer in charge of the character
If you're the character, bad rolls and bad calls reflect badly on you. You want to Win because that means you're doing D&D right, and if things go wrong, it's because you're doing it wrong.
If you're the writer, your number one job is to do things to your character that the character does not like because that gives them the chance to be interesting.
I almost forgot to mention: this woman came into the penguin enclosure with a KESTREL??? I said āoh my god is that an American Kestrel?ā and she said āYes! She was outside doing raptor education for the kids, but she doesnāt like to get rained on.ā
#she was watching the penguins with what I will anthropomorphically project as skepticism
kestrel: i hate rained on!!
human: here is birds in water
kestrel: ......no.....
actually, that sex scene is load-bearing
