[Norm would give her credit where it was due – she had guts. Even after his shift in tone, she had the audacity to reject his words and fight back. Not a whole lot of people would do that, least of all teenagers or children who hadn’t yet tussled with the cops, like her. Still…her insistence that their encounters would persist wasn’t taken well by the officer, who scowled a bit at the notion. His entire point was that she needed to stop coming here; it jeopardized everything he was working towards, and it also put her in danger, especially if he wasn’t the one on-scene. What didn’t she understand?]

[The disgruntled officer quirked a brow as she struggled to make a nonexistent point; as a matter of fact, she was committing numerous crimes merely by existing on this spot without being an officer of the law. Her intentions to look around for “something” only added to the charges – again, she was incredibly lucky to have only encountered Norm thus far. Any other cop would have written her up a thousand times.]

            quit  while  you’re  ahead.    but  she’s  not.    jude  is  so  far  behind  that  she’s  not  even  entirely  sure  what  she’s  even  chasing  after  anymore.    she’s  realistic.    she  knows  that  very  nearly  every  odd  is  stacked  against  her.    she’s  certainly  been  told  enough  times  how  hopeless  her  situation  is.    but  if  there’s  even  the  smallest  chance  that  she  can  fix  things,  everything  that  she  fucked  up,  that  she  could  bring  jeremy  home  ?    then,  she  has  to  take  it.    the  thought  of  alternatives  has  never  even  crossed  her  mind.    whatever  it  takes,  even  if  that  includes  ending  up  in  the  police  station  for  a  few  hours  (  not  that  it  matters  but    .  .  .    they  don’t  arrest  people  for  such  minor  stuff,  right  ?  ).

            jude’s  anger  flickers,  smoldering  into  genuine  concern,  not  at  the  idea  that  she’s  been  committing  actual  crimes  but  because  her  actions  could  be  doing  more  harm  than  good.    he’s  bluffing,  he  has  to  be  bluffing.    but  even  as  she  keeps  repeating  it,  her  voice  stutters  &&  shakes.    ❝    i  -  i  haven’t  actually  messed  anything  up,  have  i  ?    ❞    would  it  really  be  all  that  surprising  if  she  had  ?    jude  didn’t  used  to  have  this  kind  of  track  record.    what  happened  ?    her  next  words  are  hard  to  choose    (  her  instinct  is  to  apologize,  but  her  pride  won’t  allow  it  )    &&  they  wind  up  as  a  bunch  of  half  -  spoken  nonsense.    ❝    i  really  didn’t  mean  to,  if  i  did    .  .  .    i  just    .  .  .    ❞

            a  long  sigh  escapes  her,  a  chance  to  try  &&  get  herself  back  together.    she’s  just  so  tired.    she  gestures  vaguely  around  them,  at  the  practically  deserted  building  &&  the  fact  that  they  are  the  only  ones  here.    ❝    i  read  about  how  important  time  is  in  these  situations  &&  you’re  the  only  other  person  i’ve  ever  seen  here.    like  shouldn’t  there  be    .  .  .    more  ?    ❞    she  already  knows  the  answer,  &&  has  for  a  while.    if  her  desire  to  fix  her  mistakes  is  half  of  her  reasoning  for  being  there,  then  the  seeming  lack  of  care  shown  by  the  rest  of  the  town  is  the  other  half.    if  jude  doesn’t  advocate  for  jeremy,  then  no  one  will.    ❝    i’m  not  going  to  stop  until  people  start  doing  their  jobs,  so  if  you’re  gonna  charge  me  or  whatever  then  do  it  &&  stop  wasting  our  time.    ❞

            she  tugs  at  the  hem,  which  she  only  now  realizes  is  long  enough  to  entirely  conceal  her  shorts  &&    .  .  .    yeah,  no,  this  definitely  isn’t  hers.    quick  !    think  of  something  witty  !    or  at  least  an  excuse  that  doesn’t  totally  suck.    her  eyes  dart  around  to  the  other  students  passing  by  on  their  way  to  their  own  classes.    ❝    .  .  .    you  don’t    .  .  .    want  it  back  like  right  now,  do  you  ?    ❞    is  it  possible  to  spontaneously  combust  from  embarrassment  ?

i  love  how  someone  can  look  at  jude  at  face  value,  having  just  met  her  or  only  being  in  the  beginning  stages  of  friendship  &  be  like  ‘wow,  she’s  surprisingly  well  adjusted  for  going  through  all  of  that  trauma  &  losing  her  brother,’  but  then  as  their  relationship  progresses  with  her  it’s  like  looking  at  one  of  those  paintings  where  the  longer  you  stare  at  it  the  more  you  see  wrong  with  it  &  they  eventually  realize  that  ‘wow,  she’s  surprisingly  good  at  hiding  how  she  absolutely  has  not  coped  in  a  healthy  way  at  all.’
