Ā Some of you are reblogging because you think its funny that programmers would talk to ducks. Iām reblogging because I think its funny picturing a programmer explaining their code, realizing what they did when they explain the bad code, then grabbing the strangling the duck while yelling āWHY WAS THE FIX THAT SIMPLE!? AM I GOING BLIND!ā
AS A PROGRAMMER I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU FUCKING DO WE HAD TO BAN THE DUCKS FROM MY CLASSES BECAUSE EVERYONE WOULD FLIP THE DUCK OR THROW IT AT A WALL OR SOMETHING WHEN THEY FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM IN THEIR CODE
so thatās the function of a rubber duck
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I work at a startup and part of the onboarding package you get when you first start working here now includes a rubber duck. We also have a bigger version of the duck for the extra hard problems. Sometimes one duck doesnāt cut it and you need to borrow your neighbors to get more ducks on the problem. One time we couldnāt figure out why something wasnāt working right so we assembled the counsel of ducks and by the grace of the Duck Gods were we able to finally come to a solution. These ducks have saved many lives and should be respected for the heroes they are.
I use this for writing, actually. Explain what Iām doing and what I want to do and the different ways i can get to point B from A, as well as the different problems, amazingly working them out as I explain why I could or couldnāt the different things. I love the Rubber Duck theory.
Former programmer, can confirm. We didnāt have a duck in our office so our otherĀ programmer, who I shared a space with, used me as a duck proxy. (For the explaining, not the throwing.)
There was more than one day where Iād casually hearĀ āHey can you be a duck for a minute?ā

Character Tip
Realistic characters have contradictions. Exceptions to rules. Maybe theyāre mostly nonviolent, but theyāll punch you if you insult their friend. Maybe theyāre afraid of spiders, but arenāt afraid to kill a spider for their younger sibling.
In short, donāt be afraid to have characters who canāt be defined by a character fact sheet.Ā
Iāve been thinking about this a lot lately- thereās a reason so many people describe themselves as ambiverts (spoiler alert, most people arenāt). Itās because people recognize a lot of contradictions in themselves. Iām a calm and easy going, but I get very talkative and excited when discussing a topic Iām into. Iām super competitive, except when Iām going to lose. I get weirdly impatient about things I donāt like doing. People donāt really make sense- that level of nuance is whatās going to make your character so compelling AND ALSO why itās so important to know them as people, and not as a character fact sheet, like op says
tv shows with time travel organizations/bureaus/police/agencies/whatever should have a department with instead of a tech genius eating candy, itās a harried seamstress or fashion designer who is like
ā1450 italy? does it look like I have the time to dye you wool? nO. YOUāRE GOING TO THE 1980sā
and throws shoulder pads at the hapless time agent
āI literally made three- THREE- 18th century corsets last week. You can wait until one of them gets back, or you can go sometime post-1920s, because if I have to sew one more god damn channel I will literally lose my mind.ā
āUpper middle class?!?!? You told me upper class! FUCK YEAH THEREāS A DIFFERENCE!!!ā
āHow about kimoNO.ā
āLook me in the eyes. I do not care what you want. This is the 1500s. You absolutely cannot wear trousers.ā
āAnother court gown?? Hereās a novel idea: go as a peasant for once in your life. Why do you do this to me? Youāre fucking sadists thatās why.ā
āDonāt mind me, Iāll just be up all night hand painting silk.ā
āTHE POLICY IS ONE MONTHāS ADVANCE NOTICE ON PRE-1900s WOMENāS FASHION FOR A REASON, DEBRA.ā
Iāve reblogged this before but I would 100% work here.

if youre a writer and you want to know what multilingual ppl are really like, today I was giving directions to a Chinese couple but they were having trouble understanding me, so I turned to my gf for help and she explained it very slowly to them in English and sent them on their way. when they were gone I said ābabe⦠youāre Chinese. Why did you give them the directions in English?ā and she looked at me with utter horror, and thatās the story of how my gf forgot she spoke her own native language
human: *is heating up food*
alien: why are you doing that?
human: you see i want the particles in my food to vibrate at just the right frequency
Human: *is eating ice cream*
alien: wait you forgot to make that one vibrate!
human: well, you see, not with this food
This one is already vibrating at he desired frequency, but if it starts to vibrate at a higher frequency I lock it back in the cold box.
Human: *just reheated pizza in the oven*
Other human: *is eating a slice of the same pizza, but cold*
Alien: *exasperated sputtering*
Human: shots! shots! shots!
Alien: this liquid has negligible nutritional value and, furthermore, contains some molecules that I believe are poisonous to your species.
Human: ā¦look, sometimes we just like to gather in social groups and disorient ourselves
