I have received so many messages in the past few weeks, presumably from twitter refugees, asking me for advice about how to start a Tumblr or come back to Tumblr after many years and I've decided I am making a 100% serious Tumblr tutorial for everyone who wants to join but finds it weird and impenetrable. I am asking YOU

the new users - what do you want advice about, what do you find confusing, etc?

the veteran users - what important aspects do you think new users might overlook or get wrong?

Hi, a veteran.

The biggest thing I want new/returning people to understand is how the algorithm (or lack thereof) impacts your experience. Tumblr only suggests ads and occasionally posts from tags you follow, if you follow one. Most of what you see has to be curated by your own hand. So if you see something you don't like ignore it and make sure your dash is full of things that inspire, comfort, or otherwise make you happy before jumping into discourse. It's making a homebase before exploring the weirder/more outraging parts of the site.

And just in general keep negative comments to themselves I guess. Tumblr is the weird corner in school for the bullied kids, I will throw hands if bullies try to invade it. Just scrolling by things you dislike is a really important internet skill that I feel most other websites actively discourage.

The best/funniest way they could respond to the backlash is to just replace crisp rat's voice lines entirely with Charles Martinet making his standard Mario gibberish noises and change nothing else.

Just play it completely straight, leave all the other dialogue exactly as-is

Peach: And so, brave heroes from beyond, I implore you to save our kingdom. You are the only ones who can.

Luigi: What? No... no, that's crazy, we're not heroes, we're plumbers! Tell her, Mario!
