After watching and (being devastated by) the ALNST final round, I ended up being able to finalize some thoughts I’d had since first watching the beginning of the series. (If you are in the process of watching ALNST and/or haven’t seen the final round, do NOT click the keep reading - warning again that there are spoilers.)
With the final fates of Till and Luka, it really exemplifies the theme that single-minded focus on winning in a brutal system like this ensures you survive, but at what cost?
Although he won season 49 of ALNST (and now season 50), all Luka can do is prey on the affection his opponents (Mizi, Till) had for others who lost their rounds (Sua, Ivan) by mimicking their mannerisms. He's never going to escape the fucked up world of ALNST in any meaningful way since he destroyed what was meaningful to him (Hyuna, by way of likely killing her brother).
Those of the main cast who died (Sua, Ivan, Till), in contrast, cared more about one another than they really did surviving. (Mizi did, as well, but for the purposes of this meta, I’m going to focus on those three).
Sua sacrificed herself for Mizi, not knowing if Mizi would survive for very long after her death, but she still wanted to give Mizi a little longer to live, because she loved Mizi. Sua even went so far as to try to hide the truth from Mizi about what ALNST actually was (and that the loser in each round would be killed) just to keep Mizi blissfully unaware.
The same goes for Ivan. I'd actually argue even more so because whoever won their (semi-final) round would for sure go against Luka. And I also think Ivan knew (no matter who won) that they wouldn't win against Luka. I mean, everyone SAW how Luka messed with Mizi in round 5. But he loved Till and wanted him to survive, even if just a little bit longer.
Till, until he saw Mizi once again in this final round, didn’t really care about surviving (as round 6 proved, since he stopped singing in order to get eliminated). Even in the final round, his will was still depleted (and he was physically exhausted, since it was a few hours since round 6 considering that Hyuna is still injured) – one could argue he performed more to honor Ivan’s sacrifice and to grieve/remember them (as Luka immediately noticed when Till began to put more energy into singing).
In the end, Sua, Ivan, and Till all died. But although it caused a lot of heartache, the love/affection the four had for each other didn't amount to nothing – it allowed at least one of them (Mizi) to finally be free of ALNST. (Yes, I think Mizi does manage to escape afterwards, due to the visual parallel between her grief in round 1 and now – except now, she no longer has a collar).
With all that said, it’s no accident that, in the shot where Mizi is comforting Till in his last moments, Luka is visible...but he’s utterly alone. As the now-victor of two ALNST seasons, he casts a long shadow, but there's no one there for him anymore. Hyuna is not approaching him despite being on stage as well (and likely dying, based on her injury).
They didn't have enough time or tools or guidance to cope with their emotions. How can you love right when nobody taught you what to do with these unhinged feelings inside your chest, when you never even knew what motherly or familial love was, when u never had anything but each other in this life and still didn't know what to do about it.
They failed so bad at communicating and understanding each other but the love was still there. Ugly, messy and painful.
Im genuinely curious why people dont wanna read orv side story. Everyone who started it thinks its amazing, yet a big percentage of orv fans ignore it for some reason. Ive heard an explanation like 'there is no kim dokja' as in we dont see 100% kdj but thats not true. What you get in the side story is what you had. There were almost no changes. When you started reading kdj was already fragmented. He was never 100% from the beginning- his 100% self just haunts the narrative, as people say. The novel you read is an attempt so save him. Meanwhile in side story you get all those different flavours of kdj.
Is there another reason? Are you afraid that the ending you dreamt of wasnt true? Well, rest assured, because hsy's plan did work.
Are you scared the characters are different? Well, kimcom appears quite frequently I would say, especially in the middle, as well as other characters. Even OD and SP are there!

I feel the same way like since I finished orv my coping mecanism HAS BEEN Side Story. We not only get what we already had in orv there but we also get MORE. I mean Lee Hakhyun?? The transmigrated readers?? Heewon's backstory?? 41ST TURN YOO JOONGHYUK??

And you start reading thinking oh well ig there's no kim dokja anymore and then you get BOMBED with like 5 different kim dokjas who are all their own insane versions of endearing and infuriating at the same time like, there is really no time for missing him
