the mission was messy. intel wasn’t correct, there was no plan anymore, and it’d been an hour or so since the team decided to take a short rest.
laswell mumbled something about having a plan before retreating to get herself some sleep somewhere in the hideout. truth was, there was no safe plan anymore, not when shepard said something along the lines of not being able to help with the mission anymore.
you found john scanning over the layout of the building the team was supposed to raid in order to get the man they needed for answers. his body was tense, rocking on his feet, one hand hooked in his tactical vest, the other dragging a finger over certain locations marked on the map.
“john,” you mumbled, walking towards him.
you heard him murmur something, but you knew it most likely wasn’t directed to your calling. you knew him well enough to know that he was overthinking about the previous events– none of which were pleasant in any way shape or form.
“john.” your hand rested on top of his, the one that was running over the map repeatedly.
a low hum came from him, but his attention wasn’t entirely on you.
“look at me, please?”
“hold on, love, give me–”
“john, i’m serious.” you pleaded softly.
then his eyes met yours, exhaustion. the same look that mirrored yours.
“please, just rest with me and the others— we’re all looking over this later, i promise.” you gestured to the table where the map was rolled out.
“love—“ he started
“no, you’re doing it again,” you interrupted. “you’re spiralling because this went wrong on your watch.”
“y’heard what he said,” john started.
“and it was stupid.” you finished.
his eyes went back to the table, only going back to you when your finger tapped his forearm. it was clear in his eyes he was still thinking it.
“just .. don’t w’nna mess it up.” he sighed, free hand running over his face.
“you won’t, i know it, everyone else does too— the team trusts you more than anything, and i do too.” you assured, thumb running over his bruised knuckled.
he exhaled slowly, a breath he didn’t even know he was holding.
your arms go up, offering a hug that he accepts quickly, arms wrapping around your waist and pressing his face into your neck, beard rubbing against your skin. neither of you smelt great after hours of fighting for your lives, being exposed to who knows what, but none of that matters now—only the presence of the other.
“why do you smell like motor oil?” you murmured.
“makin’ molotov cocktails earlier. was handin’ ‘em to soap, almost chucked one at m’head” he grumbled. you let out a soft chuckle, already picturing what happened when the two of them had gotten stuck together in a warehouse. “y’smell like sweat n’ gunpowder.”
“better than smelling like motor oil, ash, and cigarettes ..”
he huffed at that.
the two of you remained in the embrace, his hand moving up and down your back, grounding himself and you in the process. “rest with me, please. we’ve got no blankets in this hideout, and it’s freezing over there.”
“usin’ me as a blanket now, hm?”
“always do.”
he pulled back first, firm hand lingering on your waist before he pulled you into a kiss, lips pressing against yours once before letting his lips move against yours. it wasn’t anything crazy, john wasn’t the biggest fan of making out during missions, rather do it in private where he could kiss you for as long as he wanted.
your fingers interlaced with his, letting him follow behind you as you led him out the room.
“g’nna treat you to your favorite restaurant when we get outta here, yeah?”

JUJU WAS WORKING. basketball had her stressed to no end. the season was coming up, constant noise that never seemed to go away. that lingered no matter what she did. like it followed her wherever she went.
well, she was juju watkins, of course noise would follow her everywhere she went.
whether it was taking pictures for fans, speaking for events, whenever she was on the court, or during boring lecture sessions she never wanted to listen to.
noise was everywhere for her. there was almost no peace unless she was in her apartment with deuce cuddled up next to her while she watched some tv show.
after a grueling practice, hitting the gym for a couple of hours, having to stand being sweaty for so long, she finally got herself back together.
a nice, long shower, freshen herself up, pick out an outfit for her class later that afternoon, and make sure she turned in all her assignments.
being a student athlete was .. difficult. of course if youre a star athlete with s thousand NIL deals. juju never took the offers for granted, but it was a lot of work.
SHE HEADED TO HER CLASS, sat there listening, made sure she knew what the heck the professor was talking about before she left that class.
she checked her apple watch.
5:48 PM.
sitting in her car, dhe contemplated on going out to eat or not, after all, she had lunch before class, but it wasnt something appetizing. leftover lasagna from some party she went to with her family a few days ago.
so of course, with no extra classes in her way, she decided to go onto her phone, look up some good cafe spots to go to in los angeles that had actual food to satisfy, and not just some bagel with cream cheese. safari wasnt cutting it, so she resulted in looking it up on tiktok. it was basically safari anyways.
one cafe appealed to her. as she swiped on the slideshow, the menu appeared, and after a good read through, it seemed like a good spot.
it wasnt in some area where the homeless hung out, thankfully, it seemed small, like somewhere she could do her homework and not be bothered.
she plugged in her phone, turning on apple play so she could pull up the directions. a 5 minute drive away from campus wasnt bad, it was actually perfect. better than driving to some starbucks for overpriced coffee.
LIGHT RNB MUSIC PLAYED AS SHE DROVE, the drive was semi-quick, light traffic, but it wasnt as bad as rush hour, when people were coming to LA, some people leaving the city, or people coming back from work.
the cafe wasnt super small, the lights brought a cozy feel. perfect for any student to study. the soft jazz that played on the speakers inside and out. it seemed like a good hangout spot, with many people sitting outside and inside.
it looked well run. clean, cozy, comfy. juju could stay for hours just studying or doing work.
real test? the food.
she stared up at the menu, deciding on some pesto pasta and a matcha latte.
after confirming to herself it was what she wanted, she made her way to the counter, hearing one of the employees say they’d assist them in a moment, so juju directed her attention to her phone, checking messages sent to her, and her instagram.
“hello, what’d you like to order?”
the voice caught her off guard a bit as she looked up, locking eyes with the girl at the register.
juju’s heart almost stopped. it probably did.
“uhm — can i get the pesto pasta and a matcha latte?” juju looked up at the menu, before back at the girl in front of her. hair up, the lighting inside the cafe hit her in all the right spots. juju couldnt help but stare.
“sure, what size do you want the matcha latte?” she smiled softly, eyes quickly searching juju’s face. she’d seen her face before, just didnt know where.
“uhm .. a medium is fine,” normally juju wouldnt catch herself being nervous. she was pretty good at talking, she didnt know why all of the sudden she didnt know how to talk.
“is that all?” the girl ased, pressing a few buttons before looking back up.
“yeah .. thank you.”
“your total is 15.45, cash or card?”
“card.”
JUJU WAS SAT AT THE TABLE towards the big floor to ceiling windows at the entrance, deciding she’d get some easy homework done to get it out the way. it was a routine she grew into. getting as much work done as she could so she had less to worry about after practice.
her eyes wandered back to that cashier. the pretty one. the one with the perfect smile and glossed lips. like God really took his time on her.
she was attractive. her voice was soft, sweet. like sugar.
normally juju didnt give out her number to strangers, she had enough people in her dm’s to be giving out her number to anybody.
but it seemed right to give her number.
so when she caught the girl cleaning up the table next to her, she had to ask.
“hey — excuse me?”
“yeah?”
“can i get your number?”
the girl starred at juju. not in a bad way, she just wasnt expecting it. of course she had people asking for her number from time to time, but this was different. normally she wasnt interested.
but something about her asking for her number just seemed right.
“sure.” a soft smile was on the other girls face. juju could’ve folded right there. a smile had never made her weak in the knees, but this had to be some exception.
“your pretty, whats your name?”
“kam.”
juju handed her phone to her, taking a moment to stare— admire.
“pretty name for a pretty girl,” juju smiled, taking her phone back when kam was done. she saw the slighr flush in her cheeks. the way she blushed just aittle.
“thank you, you are?”
“juju.”
the name immediately clicked in kam’s head. juju. juju watkins.
“oh, like juju watkins?” she questioned, knowing she’d heard the name a couple times whenever she cleaned around some girls wearing USC jerseys.
“yeah,” she nodded.
“you play basketball at USC right? sorry, i dont really watch college ball,” kam had long gone forgot about cleaning the table, setting down the rag and spray bottle, focusing more on the conversation at hand.
“mhm.”
“oh, we air your games here during the season,” kam smiled, recalling the times when her co-workers would turn on almost every tv onto the USC game. she occasionally watched the game, but it was typically packed at the cafe on gamedays, so it was difficult.
“thats cool .. does it get busy often?”
“during football season and basketball season, yeah. typically at the start of school and stuff its slower,” it was true. the cafe wasnt packed, a handful of people hanging out, drinking coffee and eating with friends.
“huh. might come more often.” juju looked around for a moment before looking back at kam, her gaze falling down to her lips for just a second.
“you should. i’d like company during my breaks,”
“then i’ll be here.”
OVERTIME, juju came to the cafe after classes, before classes, after games, practices, or just when she wanted to hang out with kam.
it was like a little routine she had.
it was a slow night on the day juju came after a late gym session. she wanted to see if kam was working just to have somebody to hang out with for a little.
the cafe was basically empty. it was almost 9 PM, the time the cafe usually closed.
kam’s attention went to the front doors when the bells softly rung, seeing juju walking up to the counter with a smile.
“juju, it’s almost 9 PM, why’re you here?”
“wanted to see you.”
“the cafe closes in like 15 minutes ..”
the other girl sighed, going to the register to get whatever juju wanted to order this late at night.
“i wanna hang out with you,” juju shrugged, looking up at the menu, deciding between a mango smoothie or a strawberry-banana one. “gimmie a strawberry-banana smoothie, please.”
“this gotta be a crime.” kam sighed, putting in her order and preparing the blender to make the strawberry-banana smoothie that was ordered.
“i’ll drive you back to my place, kammy,” the lightskin chuckled, making sure to tip at least $20, despite her order being $6.
“juju. $20 on a $6 order?”
“treatin my girl good,”
“told you stop tipping me so much .. thats like the third time this week.” she scolded, waiting for the fruits to be mixed up, grabbing the plastic recyclable cup.
“sorry mama.”
the smoothie was poured into the cup and served to the basketball player, juju made sure to give a smile and sit on the nearby chairs.
“when you closin’?”
“in 15,”
“imma wait here then.”
KAM DID GET A RIDE WITH JUJU back to her apartment, the ride was quiet, but it was comfortable silence the whole 7 minutes to juju’s apartment.
apon entering, deuce greeted the two girls, sniffing at kam for a little before eventually accepting her.
juju stepped out onto her balcony, lighting herself a blunt to smoke, ease her mind. just slow it down a bit.
“you smoke?”
“not often.”
kam looked over at her, gesturing for the basketball player to let her get a drag, which she allowed, handing her the blunt.
it was quiet between the two. comfortable silence.
“when you gonna let me be your girl?”
“juju.”
“im serious,” juju looked over at the other girl, thinking for a moment. “i want you, kam. so dead serious.” she added, hoping, praying, that this would be the day.
she’d been plotting on kam since day one.
“i dont want that hard launching stuff.”
“thats cool. i dont like that either.” she agreed, taking another drag from the blunt, the smoke flowing up and carried along with the wind.
kam subconsciously moved closer. she was aware of how close she was. the smell of weed and coconut filled her senses.
“cmon kam,” juju looked over at the shorter girl, eyes searching hers for something. anything. anything that told juju she wanted her back.
“iont want the media ruining us, ju.”
“nothing will.” she assured. “i find peace in you, kam. your like the light in the darkness for me.” she knew it sounded cringey. like some sentence you’d find on facebook or something.
but that didnt matter.
“really?”
“yea, really. i always go to you after games and practices cause you remove the stress somehow. like— being around you jus’ makes it go away.”
juju didnt care how she sounded anymore. if it came off as vulnerable, like spilling out feelings she normally wouldnt say.
“you treat your girls good, though?”
“imma treat you real good, mama.”
kam stayed in silence, staring out at the city. the city lights. the smell of smoke, juju’s coconut perfume, the way she was right there.
“ask me.”
“right here? you sure?”
“mhm.”
the two locked eyes. both wanted the same thing. each other. thats it. nothing else mattered. no worries about the media, people seeing — that was all discarded the moment the two caught each others gaze.
“will you be my girlfriend, kam?”
“yes, ill be your girl, ju.”
the blunt was discarded, juju pulled kam into a kiss. a meaningful one. slow at first, her hands on the other girls waist, keeping her close.
then the kiss got deeper. more emotion poured into it. like everything vanished around them.
finally, pulling away, juju took a moment. admiring who was now her girlfriend, in her arms, lips slightly swollen from the kiss, the way the moonlight was perfect against her skin and her eyes.
despite being overly stressed about basketball season coming up, she found someone to bring her peace.
