Sam and dean got arrested and they managed to escape but when they arrived back to their motel room they couldn’t find a way to break out of the cuffs so they decide to just go to sleep holding hands like this and deal with it later in the morning, neither of them could fall asleep for at least an hour, they were both just laying there in quiet and focusing on holding the other, both secretly enjoying the touch and moving fingers closer every few minutes till they finallyj drift into deep sleep with smiles on their faces

“Have you ever been in love?” Sam asks him in Oklahoma.

The question blindsides Dean. Jesus Christ, they’re enjoying a rare moment after a hunt, leaning against the car and knocking back a pint, and it’s just like Sam to utterly knock him off kilter.

Dean contemplates not answering him, but Sam is like a dog with a bone. If Dean doesn’t answer him now, he will dissect Dean’s silence, scratching at every nook and cranny of Dean’s thoughts until he’s satisfied.

It’s so not worth it.

So, Dean figures, what the hell.

“Once,” he tells Sam shortly, hoping Sam will let it go now. Maybe Sam will think it’s Cassie and leave it alone. But of course it’s Sam, so of course he doesn’t.

“How did it end?” Sam asks him after a moment, his voice quiet like he’s expecting Dean to reveal the secrets of the universe.

Dean glances at him from the corner of his eyes. Sam is staring down at the dirt beneath his worn boots, shoulders slumped like the weight of everything is resting on them. His hands are fidgeting idly with the empty beer bottle, and it occurs to Dean not for the first time that his brother is beautiful.

It’s not something he’s proud of but it is a part of him that cannot be faded with time. Dean would know; he’s tried enough times already. Buried himself in hunts, in women, in everything that would have him. It is what it is. Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Dean loves Sam.

“It hasn’t.”
