In a recent poll, American think that:

21% of the US is transgender (the actual number is between 0.5% and 1.6%)

30% are gay or lesbian (3%) and an additional 30% are bisexual (4%), meaning the average American thinks that only around 19% of them are cisgender heterosexuals. The actual number of cisgender heterosexuals is around 90% of the population.

30% Muslim (1%) and 30% Jewish (2%), however contradictory to this they also think 58% are Christian, equaling 118% of Americans are of the abrahamic religions to the average American or some people are both Jewish or Muslim and Christian.

33% atheist (3%), meaning the abrahamic religions+ atheism is 141% of the US population.

41% black (12%), 27% (1%) native American, 29% asian (6%), and 39% Hispanic (17%), but also 59% white (64% actual)

30% live in NYC (3%), 30% live in Texas (9%), and 32% live in California (12%), meaning only 8% live in the rest of the country (actual 76%).

And lastly the average American believe only 62% of us have a high school education, actual number is 89%.

People vastly overestimate the general knowledge of the average American, let alone political knowledge and critical thinking skills. We live in the consequences of the children left behind.

So, after being beaten over the head prodded and poked by my lovely, gentle friends on Discord, I have added a goal to my Ko-Fi page to help with the cost of fixing the leaking gas lines in the basement.

I'm getting more quotes soon, but the initial quote we received was $12k, with a secondary quote of $15k. Yeah. Not looking too hopeful.

We'll be taking out a loan to cover it like we did with the furnace at the start of this year (yes that was this year) which we are on the brink of paying off, but we need to come up with a deposit so we can get on a monthly installment plan.

I've set a hopeful goal of $5k with no expectation of meeting it. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, but please, please, please, take care of yourselves first.

Nothing makes me angrier than the “Minimum wage jobs are intended for teenagers, of course adults can’t live off the wages, they should get real jobs.” bullshit. Not only are you pro child labor but you’re pro underpaying children for their labor? My favorite shoes in the winter are my Manitobah mukluks, which are Metis-owned and participate heavily in community initiatives with other indigenous nations to train and support artists. They also partner regularly with artists from other nations on their shoes to create custom editions. Currently they are collaborating with Rosa Scribe (Cree), Janae Grass (Sac & Fox), Atheana Picha (Salish), and Melissa Peter-Paul (Mi'kmaw). They also host an indigenous market that showcases and promotes indigenous artists.

Plus they're warm as hell and the sheepskin lining means I don't have to wear socks, which is extremely nice sensory comfort. So that's nice as well.

things some people, especially people who are new to ao3 or fandom/fanfic space as a whole, seem to not understand:

archive of our own is an archive. not a social media.

archive of our own was built with the stance that there would be no censorship, because other platforms already had censorship where some things that were taboo were reported/removed. ao3 was built with the purpose that all of these works, that were not allowed on other platforms, would be allowed on ao3.

the archive will house anything that’s considered fanworks. so no, you cannot report this fic because it portrays in explicit details taboo topics about xyz, you cannot report that fic because it romanticizes and glorifies xyz. ao3 will not remove any of those fics, because whether or not you like it, those fics do not go against ao3’s terms of service.

“but these things are not allowed on other platforms” that’s precisely why ao3 was created, to house and give a platform to these things that were censored/banned/removed from other platforms.

if you have a problem with this, you can use other platforms to post and read fanfics

but you should also know that ao3 by far has the best tagging system, meaning you won’t get anything like what ao3 provides on other platforms, meaning it may be a pain in the ass for you to find a fic with the prompts and pairing you’re looking for, meaning you may still get jump scared by things that are triggering to you half way through your reading of what you thought was an innocent fic. because other platforms don’t have tagging systems, where you can find and avoid any character/pairing/tag as you please, like ao3.

When I am elected president I will institute a law saying that anyone with a net worth over 50 million must, at their own expense, employ a Jester. One of the best ones I saw was a thing noting that every single one of the few survivors of suicide jumps off of the Golden Gate Bridge realized, on the way down, that the problems they were killing themselves over actually were fixable or could be worked through...except for the now - extremely unfixable - problem of gravity.

Went to the Holocaust Museum in DC once. There was a video interview of an Auschwitz survivor who said he and some other prisoners stayed up all night with a man who wanted to kill himself. The man didn’t kill himself and survived to liberation.

In the video the survivor said “Never seek a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And they’re all temporary problems.”

Hearing that from a guy who survived the Holocaust rewired my brain a little bit.

I think something a lot of people don't understand is that depression is not suicidality, and suicidality is not depression. People can, and are, depressed without being suicidal, and sometimes suicidality peaks as people are emerging from depression. Suicidality is a wave, and the trick is to allow that wave to crest and subside WITHOUT acting on it. Whatever it takes to ride it out. For some people that's distraction, like watching television. For others it's calling a friend -- not to talk about the suicidality, but just to talk. For others it could be as simple as going to sit in a coffee shop or library, because the presence of other people is a huge diminisher of suicide risk. That's what suicide safety planning is about. It's like having any other type of emergency plan, like a plan for fire or evacuation. It's making a plan when you are in the frame of mind to do so, so that you can just DO the plan without having to think about it when the occasion arises. When you're in the midst of suicidal ideation, or even intent, you're not in a problem-solving mood. So knowing past!you, with the help of a therapist hopefully, came up with the plan and all you have to do is follow up until the wave crests and subsides, is what allows you to see another day.
