Medical Care Alert, a leading provider of personal emergency response systems to senior citizens nationwide, has been named a 2017 Gator100 company by the University of Florida.
Using sensors and software, the AutoFALL pendant can detect a fall, and signal the medical alert console to initiate a call to the emergency response center. "Thousands of seniors fall in their own homes every year, often with tragic consequences," said Bryan Stapp, President of Medical Care Alert. The AutoFALL Automatic Fall Detection sensor is worn as a pendant around the neck, close to the chest. Unlike a traditional medical alert system that requires the user to press a button, the automatic fall detection pendant uses sensors and software to detect movement.

How do you improve a senior's living conditions tactfully as a third party caregiver?
Answer by Charlie Kimball:
Yikes! It's really sad to see some of the conditions these elderly folks live in. We have received systems back that are infested with bugs and have to be destroyed. I think you have to somehow contact the family and ask them to take care of it - they need to clean and make the living situation right for their family member. They may be as overwhelmed as you are, taking on their caregiving roles. You could also give them a copy of our caregiver guide that might help them to get their act together - you can download it here: KB Results Good luck!

What problems do caregivers face when taking care of a loved one?
Answer by Charlie Kimball:
A lot of caregivers feel a tremendous amount of stress and guilt when caring for an elderly person. They also feel the emotional toll of watching someone they love either suffer or go into a gradual decline. Caregivers are very giving people, and sometimes don't get the support they need from the rest of the family...in fact instead of being appreciated, they are often second-guessed and challenged as to the decisions they make.
On the other hand, many caregivers feel a tremendous sense of pride in caring for an elderly family member, and take the opportunity to get to know them better at a much deeper level.
We have a senior safety guide that lots of caregivers use to make the home more secure and safe in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of falls and ease that stress on everyone. You can download it for free here: Free fall prevention guide from Medical Care Alert

When you get older, what becomes important to you?
Answer by Charlie Kimball:
Most elderly people focus on family and health. Hopefully they have their finances in place and dont have to worry about money. If they are alone, then they worry about their independence and how to stay out of nursing homes. Its one of the benefits of getting a medical alert system so they can feel safe at home and not have to move. Medical Alert System Benefits You Never Considered

What are the most common positions seniors land in when they fall?
Answer by Charlie Kimball:
For most seniors a fall is more of a stumble and tumble until they hit the floor. They will grab a chair, wall, or some other object to help break the fall. But most falls occur in the bathroom and the kitchen. Our free fall prevention guide has some good ideas on how to make the home safer to reduce the chance of falls.
