As a lifelong birder, I couldn't stop thinking about a comment from an earlier post about the possibility of dragon-spotters in England. So I (naturally) mocked up a page based on my bird field guides to show differences in size, weight and wing shape between the common british dragons. These are all the undersides of wings as they would be seen from the ground. The book title/author is stolen directly from His Majesty's Dragon.

I'm still basing the shape/silhouette/function off of birds, listed below if you were curious:

Wohooo, Laurence, Temeraire and some random sailors on Reliant! Oh yeah, Laurence had no idea then how much his life would change...

Anyway, I have this big, unrealistic ambition to do art for every chapter in Temeraire. It's hard to know if I can even draw the first book, but I need to get better at drawing people, and using this amazing series to do it seems like an absolutely brilliant idea.

So, at the very least, I'm going to try to do as many illustrations as I can for these books, though I can't guarantee that I'll actually finish them.

Taking a break from my full week dinovember drawing: have a Temeraire from Naomi Novik's His Majesty's dragon! Additional notes in the read more below.

My friends got me back into this series, and one has aphantasia and was curious how I thought the rigging harness worked. So here's a full grown Tem with harness, made of thick leather bands around the neck, forelegs, and wing joints held by a belly strap.

I also gave him a mane because I cannot picture him without it. Yes I know in-canon he's a black dragon, but it's not nearly as fun to shade as purple.

I spent the last 3 days drawing Iskierka 24 times to make an animation of her attacking a French ship. Most ships immediately surrendered when seeing a Kazilik approach, but “most” means there are exception. Turns out those exceptions have fiery consequences.
