As a complicated psychologically heavy story set in ancient history, “Painter of the night” (Lezhin comics) is exactly what tickles my fancy. Esthetically the art of Byeonduck (twitter) is already highly pleasurable and on top of that the characters of POTN are so well written and fleshed out.  

My way of working through my thoughts and feelings is still with music hence Yoon SeungHo as the main character with his complex personality is first to receive a “Moodsoundtrack” (I might be working on others). Starting from his childhood it leads chronologically through his life, telling the story from his point of view taking into account his emotions / mindset, up to the point the manhwa is released now, since the manhwa is ongoing it is a work in progress.  Since Yoon SeungHo is the personification of intense and dangerously seductive the music selection is a reflection of that.

I took the liberty to end on a positive note, because as much as I enjoy the story despite all its grueling events twists and turns I am hopeful for a “happy end” Yoon SeungHo starts as a bright, cheeky, teenage boy cocky, cool, intelligent, until torture leaves him broken, lonely, addicted, annoyed, angry, violent and desperate. In search of satisfaction, healing and love. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, feel free to give feedback.

It’s been a long time coming finally, I have the time to share this playlist officially. The last few months have been busy, hence I only spent very little time curating on my Playlists and even though Jin ZiXuan’s was almost done it wasn’t quite right. Those who follow me on Spotify know that I had the list public for a considerable time already though I wanted to wait with any announcements until it felt complete.

Jin ZiXuan's Moodsoundtrack was a challenge it took me a while to find a clear vision or “red thread” to follow. He comes across as this rich cocky egomaniac heir though I feel it is mostly a wall he has put up and eventually those walls crack and he opens up and ends up happy in love with his wife Jiang YanLi.

The Playlist tells the story from his perspective taken into account his character, mood thoughts as I perceived them.

Mo Dao Zu Shi is very much a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a girl. Having a playlist for Wen Qing was important to me, it doesn’t seem like she is a major character at first glance, though she is pivotal in the plot as well as giving a female perspective on how it was to live in this man’s martial arts world. She is tough as nails on the outside yet I feel she has a vulnerability that she keeps hidden deep inside. As all my Moodsoundtracks it tells MDZS from the characters point of view taking into account their mood, thoughts and unique character style. Recently I also updated/ worked on almost all the existing playlists as well and I’m still adding finishing touches to Jin ZiXuan’s and Lan SiZhui’s, it is a never ending story... It is a joy to curate these playlists and hopefully the love and dedication shows to those who choose to listen.  All will be well, be healthy and safe.

It has been a while in the works, but I finally feel that Jin RuLan’s journey in music sounds as it is well rounded. Since he is so young I think he would be heavy influenced from the most important people in his life: Jiang Wanyin and Jin GuangYao. He may give off a tough insolent demeanour but he is a sweet vulnerable character who misses his parents and feels lonely, but finds the strength to overcome his anger and is courageously trying to make his mark.

Hopefully we can all find the strength to overcome these challenging times just like Jin RuLan, hope you enjoy and if you are wondering there is more to come. I have been working on multiple characters at the same time Wen Qing, Jin ZiXuan and Lan SiZhui are still in the works.

So I just had to share it, I was reluctant starting one for him because I didn’t feel I understood him enough but working on his Moodsoundtrack helped me resolve that to an extent. Still I feel this is very much under construction, though continuous improvement over delayed perfection. Plus Birthday boy needs to be celebrated. Love

Everybody knows the name, but almost nobody understands the meaning of love. The most common mistake is to confuse desire with love. Love is doing everything out of the goodness of your heart, never expecting anything in return. Love is to nurture and fulfillment from giving. Love is happiness. If you are unhappy, hurt or disappointed, then what you feel is not love but merely desire, it is a strong feeling that wants compensation & it is never truly satisfied. When you love you are 100% content and happy giving your beloved everything you possibly can because it is your greatest pleasure, it doesn't matter if they do anything for you, nor if they love you back. Love is eternal, it doesn’t fade or run out, only desires can come and go like the tide.

Jiang YanLi is one of my favourite characters in MDZS. She is the perfect example that love conquers all and that kindness is the most powerful force we possess. In Today’s society it has become the “norm” to feel wanting, hollow, dissatisfied and it is reflected in everything also in the music people compose and the lyrics they write. That is why even though I was enthusiastic to work on Jiang YanLi’s playlist it took a long time to find the songs of positivity I was looking for but at long last it came together quite nicely. Since we all could use a little more love in our lives, I’ll share some with you this way. Forward thinker, happy go lucky, rebel, kind soul and a terrible tease. Wei WuXian’s story is extraordinary and it never gets old reliving it (at least for me) If you feel similar this playlist is worth checking out, as it tells Mo Dao Zu Shi in songs from WuXian’s point of view A-Z. The songs are meant to represent his thoughts, mindset and character and since I perceived him as vibrant

& urban that is what his Moodsoundtrack sounds like. The list might be subject to change as when a better song reveals itself or one that is needed to complete the puzzle (or a song is no longer available on Spotify 🙁) it has been in the works for almost one and a half years.

How to describe first Master Lan: charming, beaming, poised and loves to groove, in my imagination i see him not being able to hold back when some good music is playing, swaying from side to side. This Playlist is curated to reflect his character and mindset throughout the story of MDZS, have been working on it since last year, ever evolving, recently made some additions that further completes the puzzle.  Would love for you to check it out and let me know your thoughts if you feel like it. The Moodsoundtrack curated for Jiang WanYin has evolved again, recently found some more songs that fill in some major gaps hat were missing in the story. Though reevaluating it is more then just telling the story from Sect Leader Jiang’s point of view, it also gives insight on his personality / character / thought process (at least the way I see him) of course some songs (lyrics) are to be seen as a metaphor, others to be taken with some humour, while there is only a 50% chance that the man himself would have appreciated the humour part, I just couldn’t help it. Anyway I hope you enjoy and feel free to leave your thoughts.

I’ve curated several Playlists aka Moodsoundtracks for a bunch of Mo Dao Zu Shi characters which I’m still working on and frequently editing.

Some may not see Lil’ Apple as a “character” but to me Lil’ Apple is much more than a mount and has quite the distinct personality, so I made a fun Moodsoundtrack, since Lil’ Apple sounds like a Rap name there are now some beats to “break ya neck” to in Lil’ Apple’s honor. Hello dutrimafan, long time no see as we say, hope you have been well. Thank you for you interest in my playlists, making them and working on them is my way of digesting and processing this very special story while at the same time sharing my opinion on how I see the characters in a way that suits me best: through music. Creating the playlists I channel their characters, think about what they felt in certain key moments of the story also what genre and style fits them best, which makes selecting songs quite the task.Your suggestion “Only you” from the Platters is a beautiful well known classic, for me personally I do not see it in Wei Wuxian’s collection as it is a timeless classic from the lyrics to the style of the song and if Wei Wuxian was anything he was ahead of his time also quite quirky and upbeat at least on the surface so the songs in his collection are all more modern & urban mostly pop music with rock and R&B / hip-hop influences. Lyrics wise I would also see it more in Lan WangJi’s collection as he is the one who “made changes” mostly to be with Wei Wuxian also Wuxian was always able to find happiness anywhere, while I feel Lan WangJi truly found his happiness when he met Wei Wuxian, before that he wasn’t quite “happy”. Despite that to me it doesn’t fit the style I see for Lan WangJi which is (orchestra) classic & (guitar) singer songwriter, since he plays a stringed instrument guqin, for the most part. Nonetheless it is a great song and for sure does resemble the sentiment of their love, my concept is just very intricate.As you already said Mo Dao Zu Shi (GDC) is very special, so I find it hard to recommend other stories based on this as it feels like comparing. Let me ask you what did you like about Mo Dao Zu Shi (which aspects), that might make it easier. I am personally still very much caught up in this story, as im working on my playlists frequently and joined MDZS reddit and discord servers.There is another story that I also have been enjoying for a while now it is called Qin’s Moon and the prequel to it Qin’s Moon: Nine songs of the moving heavens. I discovered MDZS through donghua and only later went on to read the novel. With Qin’s Moon there has been allot of donghua material to catch upon since the show is running for 10 years plus and I very much love the story, I’m not sure if there are novels for it but right now im still busy watching the donghua anyway. What it has in common with MDZS is the historical setting in china, though Qin’s Moon is much more true to actual history of china, it is a very well written drama with deeply fleshed out characters, there is also allot of scheming and fights for power, it has romance but it is woven in and not the focal point (it is not danmei).

I am very glad you still remember me and I can see that you are as addict as me to GDC. In my mind, the way the other wrote the novel, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying really existed in some other time.

I listened your Lan Zhan’s play list. I agree with some and not for other but I respect your feelings about the music you have chosen and your hard work.

For Lan Zhan, classic with guitar, violin; something showing his righteousness, loneliness ,loyalty, his perfection but also his one side yearning for Wei Ying before their reunion and  I would like to suggest you one song for Lan Zhan ( timeframe: Sun shot campaign or Siege of the Burial Mounds): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwJ0-ddo-CY  ( I love this song) and lyrics https://www.metalkingdom.net/lyrics-song/Galneryus-Shiver-6209. It was not a peaceful time, it was war, it is why I choose this “heavy metal soft” song . Wei Ying is more rock, maybe some R&B ( not electric) but something showing his knight’s heart, loyalty in his believing , his strength when he stood up for something or someone important and also his pain and sadness towards the world , people he knows and he is full of life. I have very hard difficulties to find the exact words to express my feeling towards them.

You are right. Only you (and maybe my wedding’s song “Wonder of you “from Elvis) can only fit after their reunion but it fit so well. If we take a look at before, when they were younger ( 15 and young men) and before Wei Yin’s rebirth, this song really doesn’t fit. Recently, I listened “Can’t take my eyes of you” from Gloria Gaynor and I was thinking about Lan Zhan at age of 15 when he was secretly watching Wei Ying.

Indeed , Lan Zhan was following the Gusu rules. He is mysterious in a certain way, lonely, aloof, silent, and observing without really living his life until he met Wei Ying.  It was love at first sight. Something awake inside him; emotion, attraction, annoyance, jealousy and happiness. Feelings he never had before. Sadly, because he knew Wei Ying was attract to ladies , he never dare to confess. I believe Wei Ying always took opportunities to tease, not because he wanted to be his friend but because, unconsciously, he was attract to him. He said a few times how Lan Zhan was beautiful. He was truly happy every time he was seeing Lan Zhan and sad when they parted in bad term.

  Thank you for your recommendation. BTW, I read novel “ The heart of a Smith”” on ExliedReeblScanlation and I really liked it but not as much as GDC. GDC has and will always have a special place in my heart.

Hey, thank you for you reply. It is natural that we all have our own thoughts, views and tastes in music and also on the characters. To me WangJi, was always controlled, he was never loud or acted unruly or even rough no matter the situation he was in and since my playlist is supposed to be HIS (Mood)Soundtrack I would never add a Metal song since it doesn’t suit him. I do see how he evolved from being very reserved at the beginning, until he was emotional and cried in the cave where i chose a more impactful song “Loveless” to then letting off some steam after Wuxian dies “Polar” to then allowing himself a bit more freedom of self expression to go for what he wants and that also is reflected in the song choices more lyrics less instrumental and also more vibrant songs that clearly state his desire and feelings, specially when he is drunk “Had Some drinks” “You’re mine” and “Hot Thoughts”.But in general his list is mellow “Hauntigly beautiful” as i call it. Of course I only used songs I personally like, though I tried to think in terms of what would he like, how would he think and feel and that is what I came up with. My interpretation of him through music. As for Wuxian i don’t see him having pain for this world he was always very lighthearted he never worried too much, doesn’t let anything bring him down, he is quite chipper and very forward thinking, cheeky and curious. Hence the song you suggested I also feel like it doesn’t match his personality at all. For me he is urban in every sense of the word basically the polar opposite to WangJi, though i feel he too evolved from a very cocky nonchalant rebellious “brat” which was kind of a shield to protect himself & his vulnerability, into a more mature thoughtful man who aims to make better decisions and wants to use his 2nd chance of life he has been given. But his song choices are generally charmingly dominant. Though as time progresses his and Wangji songs are more in sync he is becoming calmer while WangJi is more lively. Actually WangJi was going to confess we see it during the "Empathy arc of NMJ" where Wuxian looks into NMJ memories and he sees a conversation of Lan Xichen & Lan WangJi where Xichen tells WangJi to go find him (Wuxian) now before he leaves and WangJi tries to go to him, but that is after the Sunshot Campaign when Wuxian doesn't carry his sword anymore and finds trouble because of it specially from Jiang Wanyin and he just rushes away from the gathering and WangJi is left without a chance to let him know about his feelings. I think in that scene Wangji wanted to confess and he even talked to his brother about it, Wuxian witnessing the scene (through empathy) doesn't understand it though when he see's WangJi he just shouts " I miss you so much" of course the WangJi in empathy can't hear him.  IN other words he made up his mind to pursue his feelings for Wuxian & his brother even encouraged it. I wrote more about it on reddit . I also do not see when he very felt annoyance, he was sad mostly as he felt it wasn’t a realtionship suitable for him and suppressing his feelings hurt him. When he brushes Wuxian off, he only does it because he doesn’t want to give in into his yearning he is never actually annoyed by him. I also do not think he felt discouraged about Wuxian liking girls, more that Wuxian was constantly flirting with different people or in this case girls, apart from flirting with WangJi. Completely agree Wuxian definitely subconsciously pursued WangJi very early on, he was drawn to him like a magnet.
