Well, to anyone who reads this post, HELLO! (I'm waving btw, I hope you waved back). I'm sevine-blush-021 and, in the run-up to Halo: Edge of Dawn (releasing in December) and other upcoming Halo projects, I will be rerunning a large majority of Halo media (films, books, games) to prepare myself.

These will be posted under the tag #Sevine's Halo Rerun Reviews. I won't promise consistency or expediency, but I swear I'll try my hardest!

Rubicon Protocol was a great read, and a little thing I thoroughly enjoyed was how colossal and larger then life the Spartans were written as. It’s that ruthless, ferocious war machine that’s equal parts agile and strong, this tank on legs that steamrolls anything short of a well experienced Jiralhanae or Sangheili.

Kelly Gay conveys perfectly how surreal that must be, that distinction in how Spartans approach engaging the enemy compared to how the normal human would. The marines, the civilian personnel are scrambling in this battle, trying to avoid getting their throats clawed out by Kig-yar hungry for a midnight snack—Stone is running up like a freight train to the biggest threat she can find and putting it six feet under using her bare hands. The action is fantastic here.

Again here, you get a picture of the thundering weight behind Spartans, that immovable force capable of trampling anyone who dares get in the way.

It reminds me of how combat was described in earlier novels, with less pragmatism and more flair I think, which is fitting. The IVs stationed on the infinity are excellent warriors, and it’s impressive they lasted as long as they did with their degrading armor and guerilla tactics—they aren’t quite as pragmatic in how they fight as their predecessors. They’re leaning harder on the advancements in technology and divergent(weirder) augmentations, like how they’re actually cyborgs, and are running a bevy of artificial organs and implants.

It’s that they have a lesser focus on teamwork given the nature of the IV program, and focus on putting together similarly talented individuals like we see with Fireteams Shadow and Windfall. There isn’t the hard coded reliance and understanding on pack mentality and group cohesion like there is among prior generations.

the lord divine has spoken to me and she said you are not a true halo fan if you looked at kelly and linda in halo 5 and went “yeah they SHOULD have snatched waists” no, wrong. Spartan body types have been dogshit since reach I do not give a single fuck if you want your blorbo spartan oc to be thin as a rail

Spartans are giant hunks of “I will kill you” muscle bundled together by an armor that makes them look like a tank. Making Linda and Kelly have hourglass figures is not only inaccurate, it’s stupid as fuck. There should be no difference in the body types of Kelly or John, don’t care didn’t ask if you disagree. She is a walking tank and the sci fi augmentation bullshit does not equal sexual dimorphism.

Reach started this shitty trend and we suffer the consequences every time they have to make a gendered model for spartans. It’s stupid, it’s wrong, get this shit out of my sight. Halo 3 is the only game that handled spartan gender right by having it be a voice line difference first, infinite also gets brownie points by having body types not be gendered at all

i consider them alive fuck it why not? mariah, black team and naomi began the trend of IIs just being created in spite of prior hard numbers statements in Fall of Reach, who cares anymore(i do when i need to get neurotic about numbers)

and in that measure red team from HW also comes out of nowhere. all things considered i might try to conjure an edit of the halsey line if it were actually accurate

My favourite explanation is that Halsey just sorta didn't care about the one's who were left broken after the augments, or they were hidden from her or whatever. That way her statements can remain sorta factual from her perspective and we get new Spartan IIs!

Halsey’s journal directly contradicts this. She makes intensive notes about rehabilitation, and on a characterization level, one of her most defining aspects is her protectiveness and willingness to go to bat for the IIs

These are not the journals of a woman who doesn’t care, and she heads the surgery for them, being the one who best knows their augmentations. She references the inconsistency in her FOR mentioned list of Spartans via the journal. She knows about who made it out of augments surgery or otherwise.

In addition to this. Red And Black Teams are both washouts who recovered.

I can't remember one way or the other, but wasn't Halsey unaware of how high Serin had climbed in ONI? I suppose that could be attributed to the fact it's ONI of all organisations.

Kilo-5 is also the novels that entirely goes against halsey’s prior characterization for the rest of the series. That all works before and after disregard. Because its portrayal of halsey is entirely incoherent and god fucking awful in comparison how she’s written elsewhere. There is no good reason, even for people in ONI who hate halsey, to stop her from healing more Spartans—that’s the cornerstone of why they keep her around, what she does works.

Serin climbing ONI and Halsey’s awareness to it is irrelevant to the matter of rehabilitation. There are many things she was unaware of in ONI, like Jorge being relocated to Noble team or the IIIs as a concept. Canon makes it clear that Halsey kept an intensely close eye on washouts and even those dead. She is extremely extremely aware of who became Spartans, because she was involved or did the surgeries to allow that to happen to begin with.

Again, Red and Black Team being washouts is ample enough evidence that ONI allowed her to continue on those, there is no non-contrived answer for them to get in the way here. They can just wait for these Spartans to recover, and then use them for whatever they please.

oh to clarify I'm not saying they block her from performing the treatments. I'm suggesting that once she has defined a treatment plan they take over the routine delivery of medication. Like, I don't imagine Cassandra-075 gets much of Halsey's brain power by 2552. Halsey may have aided her rehabilitation, but once she's on the path to recovery unless something drastic happens they might not tell her. Therefore, in my mind, it's feasible that Spartans whose recovery she assisted were combat deployed without her direct knowledge, even if she had an implicit understanding that they could be - which is the analogy I meant to draw with the Serin point. A Spartan whose post-surgery recovery progress she outlined could end up deployed without her knowledge when the treatment was fully complete and thus her be unaware about the true figures regarding the number of active duty Spartans.

Genuinely unsure why the fuck people think Forge is a Spartan I. Like, this was never said. Where has this come from, why does everybody seem to parrot it? I'm so confused.

Latest variation i've seen is that he was a 1.1 (though they called it a 1.5). How does one even reach that conclusion without having enough Halo knowledge to know it's wrong?

i don't trust citations to the halo essential visual guide or the halo 4 essential visual guide. my sample size is really small, so this isn't scientific, but i've now seen multiple times where something cited to those books is a nonsense citation to information that either doesn't exist, or doesn't say what the person who added it to the halopedia article claims it says.
