how people think autism works:
how it actually works:
autistic people are an incredibly diverse group of people with different traits and different ways of showing those traits. there's no such thing as "less" or "more" autistic, just autistic but in a different way. there is also no bridge between allistic or autistic, there is no middle ground no "24% autistic". if you aren't 100% allistic you're autistic.

something people don’t talk about enough: both extremes in autism
almost every autistic trait has something to do with extremes, and for most of them, autistic people can be on either end of the scale. sometimes this is for hyper/hypo sensitivity reasons, and sometimes it’s due to overcompensation.
examples of some typical autistic traits and their equally austistic counterparts:
no empathy? how about having such extreme empathy that you cry when your stuffed animals are ignored?
no/wrong facial expressions? how about exaggerated facial expressions because you learned early on you were doing it wrong?
nonverbal? how about being hyperverbal and not knowing when to stop talking?
highly advanced vocabulary? how about when you can’t remember common everyday words in conversation?
can’t tell when things are awkward? how about having such an sensitivity to awkwardness that you can barely stand being in the room when an awkward moment happens on tv?
has a meltdown over a small tag on their shirt? how about being so oblivious to physical sensations that you don’t know you broke a bone?
doesn’t follow social norms? how about a strict adherence to social norms, often accompanied by severe anxiety that you’re not doing it right?
can’t stand bright lights and loud noises? how about pressing lights so close to your eyes that you’re temporary blinded and constantly making noises when it gets too quiet?
no eye contact? how about intense, sustained eye contact that you don’t know when to break?
constantly rocking back and forth? how about being unable to walk without getting disoriented?
remember this when people say “you don’t seem autistic” - there is no quintessential autistic representation. this is what we mean when we say it’s a spectrum.
and yes, as several people have noted, one can easily bounce back and forth between both extremes depending on the day, time, context, health, age, etc.

Why I think I have ADD/ADHD
Symptoms I relate to:
Short attention span (especially for non-preferred tasks) - Can’t watch full youtube videos or tv programs if not interested. School work/homework is a hard one especially if I’m not currently interested in the topic.
Hyperactivity - Especially around topics I like (eg. Pigeons)
Fidgeting - I fidget with the wires on my headphones and the zipper on my hoodie a lot. Can’t sit still for long periods time without fidgeting.
Disorganization - My room is constantly messy and everything is everywhere (in my room. I get in trouble if it is anywhere else).
Poor time management and time blindness - No sense of time. Can’t tell the difference between 5 minutes and an hour. End up doing tasks for hours (eg. watching youtube for hours each day)
Frequent mood swings - Go from happy to sad or angry over the smallest thing. No moods seem to last long (apart from maybe happy).
Forgetfulness and poor time management - Forget to do chores or homework. Forgetting what people say seconds after they say it. I forget instructions all the time. Forgetting stuff related to school work (eg. How to do a maths problem or forgetting facts and dates for History).
Inability to control anger - Lash out quite a bit. Kinda lose control when super angry. Argue and shout a quite a bit.
Trouble completing tasks and frequent procrastination - If I don’t like a book/not interested in it, I cannot finish it. Finishing homework/schoolwork is hard but I ush through and do it anyway to avoid getting in trouble. Procrastinating on big tasks (usally leads to me forgetting about it for a bit).
Distractability - The smallest things distract me (eg. Random objects around a room). I distract my self quite easily (eg. Daydream or just random thoughts).
Difficulty awaiting turn - More in earlier childhood because I’ve kinda trained myself to be more patient to avoid getting in trouble.
Doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to directly - Sometimes I “zone out” so I can fully focus on listening so I don’t forget. Sometimes I’ll fidget whilst listening so I can better pay attention (I don’t know how it works but sometimes doing several things at once helps me foucs on one thing, eg. Watching youtube whilst doing anything).
Loses things easily - Pens, pencils, items of clothing. I leave stuff everywhere and forget to pick it back up. I have frequently left my school lunchbox in classrooms and forgot about them.
Forgetful in daily activities - I forget to drink water and sometimes eat.
Talks excessively - Usally around topics I like/know about. I talk quite a lot to myself too.
Interrupts others - Usally in conversation. Now I just prefer not to talk then to talk over others (I think that’s because of anxiety).
Constantly changing activities or tasks - I can go from tiding my room to getting distracted and rummaging through stuff to making a tictok to watching youtube videos.
Sensory difficulties - I hate sticky textures. I also refuse to eat toast and icecream and waffels/pancakes (because of the icky textures). My favorite sensory thing: Touching cold or fluffy objexts to my lips to calm me down or focus me.
Stimming - I usally when I’m excited or angry or I don’t like the texture of something. I also do it to express my emotions because I struggle to express my emotions through words sometimes. Some stims I do: Flapping hands, jumping, rubbing my fingers together.
Hyperfocusing - Some that I am aware I have had: Minecraft, organisation, books ect.
Lack of object perminance - How I lose things quite often (put things down and forget they exist). I also often forget people exist and therefore forget to talk to people.
Thinking in my head - I lose my train of thought easily. Sometimes my head can feel very crowded and “loud”.
Loss of sleep - I get restless at night. I aslo struggle to get to sleep and wake up.
I also get very overwhelmed by the possibilites of things I can do. I usally stick to the same few activites.

Pros of having ADHD:
Can track prey for hours without losing focus
Special interest: basket weaving
Always fidgeting - banging rocks together and discovers flint-knabbing
Distracted by berries
Stimming by making noises, discovers the sksksk that lures out squirrels
Can't sleep at night, great at guarding the cave while family sleeps
Sensitive senses means discovering and refusing to eat rotten/poisonous food
Sees bird eat nut - impulsively tries it too and discovers that nuts taste good
Cons of having ADHD:
Can't do homework
Impulse buys
Can't use a calendar
Can't sit still in classroom
born in the wrong generation
there are only two (2) main ways adhd ppl deal with time:
1. “i have one (1) thing i have to do this afternoon, so i absolutely cannot do anything else today” (except you absolutely can)
AND
2. “i have 17 things on my schedule today, but i can absolutely fit in 9 more things” (except you absolutely cannot)

that paper about how adhd is only viewed through the lens of capitalism.. i think thats why all the advice neurotypical psychs give adhd people is basically "you cant do this thing very well so make sure to do it extra good". they literally can't concieve of someone living a life without strict deadlines and monotonous routine. not to mention that they never mention anything about the severe emotional processing symptoms because peoples mental health issues and disabilities are always categorized by the ways in which they impact a person's ability to produce profit and not by the pain and suffering they can cause
no, listen, when I say I want to integrate more specific solarpunk stuff in my life, i don’t mean to ask for yet again new “aesthetic” clothes that now you have to buy or make to show your support of the movement (screw that i’m consuming enough as it is), or more posts about impossible house goals, or whatever, I’m asking you what my options to build a portable and eco friendly phone charger are, im asking you viable tiny-appartment edible plants growing tricks on a budget, im asking tips to slow down when my mind and society tell me im not fast enough, i don’t need more rich art nouveau amateurs aesthetics or pristine but cold venus project, okay, i know i should joins associations where I am tho i’m constantly on the move, thanks for that, just, you know, can we get a bit more practical ??? how do I hack my temporary flat into going off the grid for the time i’m here
