just so yall know
art block is your brain telling you to do studies.
draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.
art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard
think of it as level grinding for your next work.
As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time. Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when you’re not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you. So, when you get back to that big/important piece? You’ll know what to do and how to do it.
Nothing in nature blooms all year round. Rest, and take care of yourself.

Tabard worn by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) at the medieval bal costumé at Buckingham Palace, 1842.
Obvious sewing tips that I didn’t realize:
When sewing a hem, keep the seam to the right hand side through your sewing machine
Put all your pins the same direction on the same side (the one you see when sewing)
Measure your seam allowance
Read your sewing machine guide!!
Double check you threaded correctly (I keep forgetting this and suffering)
There are a surprising amount of patterns free online
You don’t need a dress form, there are plenty of guides online on how to use your dimensions as a guide
Messing up is okay! You can always take out a bad seam or rework a pattern
Sewing doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, and it’s more fun than I was expecting :)
Bitches will be all “I’m a writer!” then never write.
It’s me, I’m bitches.

so i was just in my closet, and i came across something both fiber craft folks and fandom folks would probably find interesting.
so back circa 2003, i was obsessed with lord of the rings, as one was at the time. return of the king had recently come out, and then an official lotr exhibit came to the natural museum near me, and i got to go and spend a few hours gawking at all the props.
i saw sauron’s armor, arwen’s gowns, the minas tirith miniature, and treebeard. i saw anduril. i practically licked the glass. when we had to leave, we went to the gift shop and found the most incredible thing - authentic fellowship cloaks!! but of course they were like 300 fucking bucks. but then they had scarves made the same way, and those were far more affordable at $60.
all of this to say, i have an authentic fellowship scarf. it’s woven from the same wool as the actual cloaks used in the film (which are apparently actually gray, not green), from the same new zealand flock, and woven using the same unique pattern as the cloaks. i think the information said something about it being a pattern designed to aid in camouflage, to help them blend in with their surroundings.
i know nothing about knitting or weaving, but even i can see that it’s pretty damn cool.
its not a knitting project until you dont have to unravel what youre doing three times because the stitch number is wrong
Honestly, pragmatic villains who are just too fucking sensible and practical to be bigoted is a fondness of mine. I mean, consider a straight-up ruthless, heinous villain whose minions, henchmen and assassins are 90% female, for no other reason than because all these other wannabe Overlords of the Universe were overlooking these perfectly good, competent professionals because of their sex, and they’re loyal as well because they know he’s the only employee who’ll actually treat them fair. What else are they gonna do, turn good?
The hero team has five dudes and one woman and for fuck’s sake she’s wearing heels.
Someone write the story where the the henchmen seduce the heroine to the bad side with statements like “How many times last week have you wished you had another woman in the room to make eye contact with while some dude went on and on about his prowess?” “Ugh. I guess that’s one advantage of working on your team – you’ve always got someone around to sympathize.” “Yeah, no. That’s not my point. I have not wished that at any point in the past week, because our boss doesn’t do that. Anyone who points out a way in which his prejudices are interfering with his effectiveness gets a gift card and an extra vacation day.” “… …. Are you hiring?”
“OK, like, yes that sounds appealing, but your boss is still trying to subjugate humanity! I can’t be party to that!” “You’re allowed to stab anyone who manspreads.” “Yeah, but –” “Free menstrual products in the locker rooms.” “…” “…” “…” “OK, I didn’t want to mention this – we usually try to not discuss it in recruitment, because we like to save it as a surprise for orientation – but see these pants?” “Yes, I see your pants. I know what your uniform looks like, you’re all wearing the same pants.” “Yeah. Well. Watch this” (sticks hands in pockets)
It’s really hard to argue with the point about the pockets though…

My ancestors, watching me dump an entire stick of cinnamon, two cloves, an allspice berry, and a generous grating of nutmeg into my tea, sweetened with white sugar and loaded with cream, while I sit in my clean warm house surrounded by books, 25+ outfits for different occasions, and 6 pairs of shoes, in a building heated so well I have the windows open in mid-autumn:
Our daughter prospers. We are proud of her. She has never labored in a field but knows riches we could not have imagined.
I like this so much better than the idea that our ancestors would be embarrassed or ashamed of us for being “soft” or some crap like that.

Grad school has been kicking my butt lately. I haven't had much time for knitting. However, I did manage to finish this project and my class is done in a week so things are turning around.
