I’m th’ youngest of our zoo, myself, but I reckon we have similar experiences regardless— how many siblings ‘ve you got? ”

“I bet. You alchemy types all gotta be after something big and busy. Probably took up alchemy in the first place because of how challenging it was, right?” He laughs with a friendly shake of his head. Denny may tease them, but a piece of him thinks that even if he was the smartest guy in Amestris, he’d be a terrible alchemist because he just doesn’t have that kind of drive hardwired into them. They’ve got to be full of some kind ever growing longing to know, he thinks, just to have the ambition to perform alchemy, let alone research it. 

“You’d be right about that.” 

“Still sounds kind of like a pretty low bar to reach, honestly. Sorry you haven’t met a lot of decent guys,” Obviously she’s exaggerating, but the point stands; he’s clearly standing out amongst the crowd, “glad I make the cut, though. I’ve got five little monsters myself. How bout you?”

“Um, I guess for one thing there was all that training at the academy. When you do them every day, it starts to feel like you’re missing something when you don’t do all the drills and cals and whatnot. I guess I just got in the habit! Certainly helps when you’ve got someone like Major Armstrong to ask tips from, too.”

“Huh,” he articulates very intelligently after a moment, tilting his head slightly as he looks up to the lieutenant from his squat, “you know, this totally reminds me of the time I lent one of my pens to Ed and he got frustrated and snapped it. Aw, poor kid had it hard enough, I wasn’t gonna give him too bad a time about a pen, but he insisted! Flash of light and boom! Next thing I know he’s handing me what looks like some kind of demon figurine! Oh, man, it was so tacky, I couldn’t use that thing in public. I gave it to my brother, he went nuts for it.”
