So I’ve been reading May We Be Spared to Meet on Earth (highly recommend) and here are some of the things I’ve learned about James Fitzjames from his letters that make me kinda emotional:
He had two Godchildren: William and Elizabeth Coningham’s son, William, and Edward Charlewood’s daughter.
He made really bad jokes/puns in his letters. My favorite being “This will show you that we are really like a man shaving; So-appy!” when describing to his sister-in-law his and the crew’s high spirits.
The man like never slept. He was usually up writing at midnight and often describes being up at around 3 in the morning. He says “When I do sleep, I do twice as much as other people in the same time.”
He kept a portrait of his brother, William Coningham, in his cabin and sometimes said goodnight to it.
