All my life I didn’t see it, denied it. All my life I had the assurance I was not prey to mass delusion. There just, wasn’t anything remarkable there. And then they just fucking throw some glasses and cardigans on this man and make him sad and cowardly and I fold. All I think about now is Ryan Gosling bouncing and crying on it. It being? Whatever have you. A rock dildo. Markiplier. Any penile like object this pathetic little man is in the vicinity of. I should be killed.

The famed Scrapper captain is finally in Everett's hands after a failed attempt to steal from his supplies, completely at his mercy, and the only thing he has to decide upon is just how he's going to mess with them first.

"Captain, you'll never guess who we caught trying to raid the alpha jackbox down at the port!"

Ajax Everett was not a man easily swayed. He was the esteemed captain of Fortune's Favour, held in high regard among the looters of Drifters' Bay for the heists he managed to pull, and the iron grip in which he had the whole Fasarian port fearfully locked. Not many people got past him successfully, and those who did rarely lived or dared to try again. He was a man deservedly feared, and one who allowed himself to revel in the bitter chill that entered a room with him.

He was sharpening his blade with a killer's precision when his boatswain had run in, almost disturbing the pristine edge of the metalwork. On his address, Everett looked up slowly, his gaze almost as sharp as his weapon. "This had better be worth my time, Verritus," he mused, raising an eyebrow.

Verritus nodded with the kind of certainty that few would try and deny him. "Oh, trust me, Captain, this one is worth it."

"Very well, I will humour you. Who have you caught?"

"Phoenix Travelian."

Everett perked suddenly, and leaned forwards, fingertips steepled together and gaze unwavering. "Travelian, eh?"

Phoenix Travelian was notorious, a Scrapper captain so good at their job that they were practically invisible. The fact that this smuggler— handsome of face and loud of presence as they were— had avoided so many people but not Verritus was remarkable, a true testament to the ferocity of his hires. When Verritus nodded his confirmation, Everett smirked, almost hanging on his every word. He dreamed of the day when he'd be able to finally catch a Scrapper, and to have not only done that, but to have caught the infamous Phoenix Travelian… Well, that was a feat of it's own.

He had to see for himself this infamous peacock.

"Where are they now?"

"Down below. Do you really think I would let such a catch go so easily?"

"I never doubted you for a second, Verritus. Show me to them."

Phoenix Travelian bunched their knees up to their chest, trying to find somewhere remotely comfortable to rest their bound hands. They hadn't prepared for this; couldn't have possibly known about or anticipated the chance of getting caught. Most Scrappers were, by both instinctive nature and according to the tales of ambitious travellers, stealthy individuals with enough to hide that they were often considered ghosts.

Above all, though, Scrappers weren't meant to get caught. Many of them had spent so long attempting to claw their way back to the inner reaches that avoidance— and particularly, avoidance that led to cruising unnoticed— was paramount, and not only that, but a necessary step for most of their survival.

They were supposed to be intuitive enough to blend in with the colours of the world. But they had been careless, and now they had been caught. As they leaned forwards, letting their knees hit their chest, they considered just how and why.

For one, they hadn't been anticipating someone apparently watching their every move when they raided the port supplies. That was probably the primary reason why they were where they were, trying to make sense of the grey shades in this pitch dark room. But, for another, they'd gotten cocky because of a string of recent successes leading to deals they couldn't have even imagined, and let themselves believe that they could let their guard down for just a second.

That second was all anyone needed to exploit just the right gap. Anyone knew that. And they'd practically invited their assailant into doing just that by playing fast and loose with this job.

And as chance would have it, they didn't even get to finish the damn job anyway. The middleman between them and the transaction had given them the wrong damn location, and—

Something caught their attention suddenly, and they stopped trying to rationalise their capture for just long enough to pay attention.

Those were footsteps.

Two sets, both heavy and painfully obvious, and harbouring enough anger between them that the red was all but bleeding through the doorframe. Phoenix averted their eyes just as they heard the hiss of the door release, deciding that they simply weren't curious or foolish enough to meet the eyes of whoever that man brought back with him.

"As I promised, Captain."

"Excellent. Thank you, Verritus. I can take it from here."

The sting of red bled over with shimmering, violet amusement. One of the figures turned away and wandered down the corridor, leaving Phoenix with the other, the new colour, and the combination that struck fear through them like a violent storm.

"So… you're the Scrapper…" The voice— uptight and proud— perfectly conveyed that amusement that Phoenix could sense. This figure ambled into the room one purposeful step at a time, clearly eyeing Phoenix the whole while. "Your name has far transcended legend, Travelian, I must say."

Phoenix glared at the pointed boots of the figure. "What d'you want from me, pirate?" They made an attempt to push their sleeve down by scraping the fabric against their knee, just in case. The last thing they wanted was to give themselves away too early, or to make it clear that they were afraid in any capacity.

"Pirate?" The figure scoffed. "You can do so much better than that, my dear. It almost sounds like you're trying to insult me…"

Finally, having been practically coaxed into it, Phoenix looked up, and immediately startled, feeling their blood run cold. If this man's astoundingly proud face and dark, angled features didn't give enough away, then pairing the voice to that perfectly predatory snarl certainly did.

As the recognition sparked across Phoenix's face, the figure smirked, meeting their eyes from under his brow. "Ah, so you do know… Go on, I wouldn't deny you the pleasure."

"Captain Everett—" For what it was worth, they had tried to keep their voice level, but the jolt of reality in tune to their situation had scared them enough that it wavered, and the captain's name was drawn out with a kind of dread they would have rather avoided.

Their breath ran short.

Of course their luck would have it that the first time they were caught, it was by the crew of the most feared man this side of the Outerlands…

"Mhm, damn right. Now… I have just one question, and I fear it shall come easily enough." His hand rested on the hilt of his freshly sharpened blade, and he tilted his head just so. Phoenix shifted. For good measure, he drew it out, and with an unwavering hand, drew it neatly to the line of their throat.

"Why did you think yourself bold enough to steal from me?"

"I—" Fuck. Not only had they been ditched or misinformed by the courier, but they had been attempting to get something from fucking Everett of all people…

They faltered, trying and failing to come up with an excuse on the fly. "No, no, you have me wrong! This was a pickup!" Phoenix had attempted to back away, but they had been well and truly backed into a corner, so much so that they could barely even see the door for everett's imposing figure.

"A pickup, right… Look me in the eyes, Scrapper. What do you see?"

"… Huh?"

"What do you see when you look at me?"

Confidence. Too much, but none of it misplaced. A man who saw himself with exactly the reputation his peers had given him and ran with the bloody crown in visage above his head. But that wasn't the kind of answer Everett wanted, and Phoenix was all too aware of that. Besides, there was little else they could say when the point of a blade was held so precariously and yet so unwaveringly against their throat.

"Red," they answered instead, sighing softly to themselves. "Brighter'n I've seen in a while. You— You live up to that reputation they say you have…"

That went directly to the captain's head. He grinned— a sharp something that perfectly accentuated a man followed by that much red— and edged forwards ever so slightly. Phoenix felt the blade press into their throat a little more, and could only feel glad that they were accounted for.

"I should fucking hope I do. the decks of this vessel weren't scrubbed clean for no reason, now… Though, to speak of things that have been scrubbed clean… You, Travelian, are remarkably hard to read."

"And that's supposed to mean what?" they asked, though they already knew exactly how a phrase like that should be translated. This one doesn't know of the Transferrence and he's about to use it against you.

"I've heard it told that Scrappers are easy to read as we are to you. It's in the eyes, as they say. But yours have remained the same all the while. Where are your colours, Travelian?"

"Why? So you can consider yourself a reader too? So you can take what you find out and exploit it?" For added measure, they leaned forwards just a little, heeding the blade and taking it in thier stride.

"Are you aware the position you're in right now?" Everett angled the blade, running the edge along their throat instead. Still, they didn't falter, and still, their colours didn't make themselves obvious. "I could kill you, just for trying to rob me…"

"I have far better things to do with my time than live up to a centuries old stereotype…"

"As you have heard what surrounds me, I too have heard rumour circulating about you. You are an expendable thief, and though you claim to be captain of that pathetic lot, I know you stole that title as you steal everything else."

"I'm as much a captain as you are." Phoenix knew they should've expected the complete lack of anything readable on Everett's face. He was a perpetually smug bastard, and knew well the kind of strings he was pulling. But most of the rumours had been true so far, and if that was the case, then Phoenix was almost assured that the rest of them were too. They tried to steel themselves as best as possible, though they could see their own reflection in the blade, and it didn't look good for them at all.

Everett pressed deeper. Phoenix felt the point where their skin started to break. That bright, tangible panic set in once again. There was no fighting this. They were remiss to even try, even though they had to give themselves some form of credit for the effort.

"If you— if you wanted to kill me, you'd have killed me by now… So what do you really want?"

This time, Everett smirked, and for just a moment, the blade was lifted from Phoenix's throat.

"I think you can be of great use to me."

Theory on why Tofu hates Markiplier

If you are unfamiliar with Tofu, please read this post or watch this playlist about the snake who hates Markiplier. tl;dr- under the Markiplier gif.

From the videos you can see she tries to figure out what is upsetting Tofu, and found that it's not just streamers, or just his voice, or the stream. This specific snake

He does not like Markiplier specifically which is demonstrated by him squaring up with Mark, striking, and tail buzzing at him. He recognizes Mark specifically as a scary threat.

Animals have been shown to recognize human faces, and Tofu's reaction to Markiplier's face (and only his face as shown by the printout) is strong evidence that he recognizes Mark's face and differentiates him from other faces. With crows, they've been shown to hold grudges and have that grudge extend to other crows.

So Tofu has a negative association with Mark, and specifically Mark. The question is why? My theory is: perceived threat after a perceived dangerous situation. Some have theorized Tofu was mistreated by someone who looked like Mark- if they were while in his keeper's care she'd know. If it was his breeder, he'd more likely be afraid of all humans and need to first get over this negative perception (basing this on how Sakura reacted with massive trauma that took years for her to overcome, and to this day she's still jumpy. A breeder doesn't socialize their snakes so they'd only know humans to be abusive before being adopted, and his current keeper would very much notice that terrified trauma behavior to herself.)

One thing important to know about snakes is they are not only capable of learning from each other, but are protective of each other. I've seen this with my girls interacting with each other (yes snakes have friends and remember their family), learning from watching the other and copying her actions, as well as behavior I've observed on the Rattlecam with wild snakes. Adult snakes teach younger snakes, as well as are protective of them- even if they aren't their own babies. A female was shown on the rattlecam watching over a group of slitherlings that were obviously not her offspring as she was heavily pregnant. IIRC that same female ushered babies to safety after a hawk attack before worrying about her own safety. I've seen it in person as well with my girls, who have shielded each other from perceived danger, and scoria also squared up to something scary in the hall as though she were protecting me. And when it left she immediately went back to being relaxed and cuddly and happy. Snakes have friends that are snakes. It's an outdated belief snakes cannot bond with their keepers, as many do and seek them out for attention. These observations of snake behavior are part of what play into my theory basis.

So what could Mark himself have done? If you watch streamers you'll know Markiplier is known for playing jumpscare games with his FNAF let's plays being some of his most well known. Tofu's owner knows Markiplier, and is actively watching Markiplier with Tofu. More than likely she regularly watches Mark, has watched jumpscare videos, and had Tofu around while doing this.

It's a reasonable assumption. And if Tofu's keeper reacts to Mark's jump scare videos by flinching, looking frightened, or making frightened sounds, it's quite likely Tofu's sees Markiplier is involved every time... and blames Mark. Seeing his keeper get startled, Tofu doesn't understand it's a fun video or that humans enjoy being jumpscared (honestly I don't think I could explain it to him either) so he's learning from his human that Markiplier is a scary threat.

And from Tofu's point of view? He's right! Markiplier is a regular threat that not only (probably) scared his human, but regularly appears to stare him down and even went after him in his own home! And when his keeper scolds him? It's likely the same misunderstanding that dogs have when their owners yell at them to be quiet- they think the human has joined in! Clearly his keeper is joining him in being upset at Mark!

So in Tofu's mind? Mark is a diabolical threat to his family's safety that he must defend them against, and they are united with their keeper in their efforts to drive away that scary scary guy. You are very brave Tofu, and we are all very proud of you.
