The Tumblr Experience

heyyy, everyone!

I got hit by a random urge to write a very specific type fic with Rafe Cameron, and im word-blurbing it out into a google doc at the moment. I don’t currently have any set long-term story in mind but im coming up with a lot of info for my chosen oc for the story; her name will be Evangeline or “Evie” for anyone interested.

I don’t want to make any guarantees about a long-term fic yet but I might do some oneshots here and there between the two of them? if anyone’s interested?

Do you have any tips on becoming a better writer? i want to write but i feel like my skills aren’t there yet.

Ive made a few posts about writing tips or advice, but lately I've been realizing how important this one piece I will give is: read more. Read more novels, fanfics, etc. I pick up so much with styling and even character's thought processes so much more now than I ever did before writing fanfic. Read things outside your comfort zone and things that feel exactly like home.

Writing didn’t really start clicking for me until I became a better reader. Not like...academically, but like...noticing more. I started paying attention to how writers handle the inner monologue and inter workings of a character, how they move through a scene, how they let a character think without over explaining, how tension is built, how people seldom say what they actually mean. I pick up so much now just by reading. Like cadence, pacing, how emotions are layered, how to interweave 'my darlings' but not over do it (lol and yet I do this a lot, esp in my most recent fic a the cure for suffering which is probs why its not as easy of a read as my other fics)

For example, I just read The Handmaid’s Tale, and I can literally see its influence reflected in the introduction of Right Where You Left Me—the way she remembers, the way her thoughts move through her past and present at the same time.

so, I know this might not seem like a fun answer or a quick fix, but truly reading more from your favorite fanfic authors, reading more books, will truly truly help!!

Accidentally reported you’ scam

So it’s just another day on tumblr when a beloved mutual suddenly DMs you (or a random stranger) claiming that someone impersonated you and has scammed them out of $900 be it art or crypto or because of content related to CP. They tell you they’ve accidentally reported you by mistake and that the only way to clear up this issue is to contact someone on discord. They even show a screenshot claiming your account was reported for fraudulent activity and action must be taken within 24hrs or else your blog will be terminated. You just need to contact the “official” report dispute discord account in a timely manner and clear everything up!

You panic! You don’t want to lose your blog so you immediately DM the discord account who begins asking you questions before ultimately asking you to change your email address to theirs so they can ‘fix’ the flag on your account. All is well, and you assume that the false report is going to be cleared up…Right?

Unfortunately no. That’s not what happens.

You get locked out of your account and now the scammer logs in as you and starts to send the same message to anyone and everyone they find. The same message that now you accidentally reported the receiver and you need them to contact the same discord account to repeat the same process over and over again and you yourself seem to have no way of accessing your blog to stop the phishing. But don’t fear! You can fix this! Just contact the real support email and let them know you’ve been hacked and give them any information they may ask to confirm your the real owner of the blog.

Here are things to keep in mind:

- There is no official report dispute discord account ran by tumblr that isn’t a thing and has never been.

- Any discord account claiming to an official tumblr report dispute staff account is a scammer.

- You do not need to ever contact Discord for a tumblr related issue no matter how official the screenshot looks.

- This scam can affect anyone, even your friends. Keep them informed and if you can contact them offsite to let them know they’ve been hacked please do so they can get their account back faster.

- Reports are handled through the official tumblr tech support line and will never be through discord. (Link is to tumblr help center)

I'm a fandom oldie and a strong proponent of "ship and let ship", and I defend everyone else's right to ship what they love... But I think that gives people the idea that I like, automatically love every single ship??? Or every single trope?

I don't though!

There are a lot of fandom tropes that are on my "absolutely fuck no" list. There are a lot of irk kinks that are also on my "nope absolutely not" list, too. Personally, this is healthy. I'm able to look at something and go "Yep, I hate it, but it's not harming anyone, so continue to do as you please."

It’s easy to defend the things we like, just like it’s easy to fight for our own rights and those of people just like us. When you have to use logic to extend your sense of justice to people you can’t relate to, that actually takes effort.

I don't have the citation but I remember seeing one of the AO3 founders say something like "when we sat down to discuss what would be allowed on AO3, we started by thinking about what tropes/kinks/etc we would never in a million years read ourselves, we came up with the ickiest oh-fuck-no fic concept we could imagine, and we agreed together that we were building a site where That Fic would be allowed to exist alongside all the others".

To my mind that's the same principle, and it's worth challenging your own sense of disgust that way -- asking yourself, in that case, if I'm really anti-censorship am I willing to stand against the censorship of something that disgusts me? If I'm really in favor of human rights, am I willing to stand for the basic rights of the most loathsome human being I'll ever meet? How far does "universal, basic, fundamental" really go? Do I actually believe in these things across the board?
