Both Hachi and Aoi are second generation immigrants, Hachi is canadian-japanese and Aoi is nigerian-japanese. Hachi’s mother is canadian, and his father is japanese; Aoi’s father is nigerian, and his mother is japanese.
Hachi’s parents are divorced, Hachi’s mother lives in Canada with her parents, Hachi’s grandparents. The relationship between the cat and his mother is complicated, kinda stranded, Hachi can’t help but feel abandoned and a bit resentful towards her mother. Hachi’s father is an alcoholic, struggles to keep a job and has financial issues, but is as supportive to Hachi as he can, given the circumstances. He is the opposite of strict, he is very permissive, maybe a little too much. He fails to realize the struggles Hachi goes through, and how bad he performs in school. Hachi is intelligent, but he has some issues with authority and is disinterested in whatever school has to offer. In fact, Hachi is disinterested in almost everything. Hachi has adhd, but he is never diagnosed until much later in life. Hachi has a lot of aesthetic and artistic taste, likes to do art in the form of graffiti, but he doesn’t take his own skill very seriously. It is not until later in life, in his adult years, that he dedicates more time and effort to perfect his skill. He is also very fluent in english, since he has a very good relationship with his maternal grandparents, and wants to be able to communicate with them. Hachi also has always lived in the same city.
Aoi has very strict and wealthy parents, like in canon. He used to be a very social person, eager to make friends and connect with others, he is extroverted, even if his nature is rather shy. He struggles to trust in people since what happened to him before moving to the new city. He plays violin and piano. Aoi has travelled a lot, through different cities in Japan. Aoi is also neurodivergent, he is autistic, but he never gets diagnosed, although both Hachi and Aoi realize that about him in their adult life. Aoi’s father is strict, while his mother, while also strict, is a bit more laid-back. Aoi as an adult joins a class of self-defense, so that he never has to be scared of being physically hurt again. Aoi is Hachi’s muse! Hachi paints Aoi a lot. Aoi feels a bit pressured by his parents, and even though he is intelligent and performs well in school, he doesn’t have that much time for himself or his boyfriend or friends to spend. He also feels rather emotionally alienated with his parents; Aoi and Hachi bond over that. He struggles but eventually tells his parents about his romantic relationship with Hachi. Aoi is a very busy person; when he lives with his parents he is occupied with either studying to have perfect grades, practicing piano and violin, and probably practicing some elite-type of sport, like golf or something LOL. He couldn’t care less about golf btw. Like any person, he just wants his parents to be happy and proud of him. It is later in life that he regains a sense of self to pursue his own passions (which btw I have yet to decide. It is probably something related to social work, though).
