Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable.

Millions of people have decided not to be sensitive. They have grown thick skins around themselves just to avoid being hurt by anybody. But it is at great cost. Nobody can hurt them, but nobody can make them happy either.

Can I get some help from you guys pretty please? I’m a therapist that works primarily with teens and lots of eating disorders. I’m not judging just honestly curious. I’m clearly missing something.
Why does it seem that every person in recovery from an ED only eats sugar and dessert and thinks it’s healthy? That really messes with your mental health and mood in addition to physical health. Are their therapists telling them to do that? I kinda feel like I’m majorly missing something.
Will someone please enlighten me? I would be so grateful!
Thanks, Xoxo Elizabeth
Hitting the reward center of the brain for a better association w/food? A well-intentioned cavalier shift to the other extreme? Having a defiant attitude to the former mentality of punitive restricting (or purging)? Replacing one addiction with a less destructive one? Desserts look yummy and pretty and are instagrammed more? As a former sufferer I feel like it could be any of the above. Good question.
I completely agree with every reason you listed. That would make the most sense.
But I think maybe they don't understand that eating dessert and sugar makes your brain crave more dessert and sugar. 1) So you start by starving yourself 2) Then you eat a bunch of calories that have no nutrients in them 3) you feel guilty and attempt to restrict again or purge 4) but it's harder now because a) your brain has high jacked your mind and is screaming give me more sugar b) your body is still starving for nutrients which overwhelms you with cravings 5) so you eat more sugar and cycle repeats 6) as cycle repeats your brain and body are shutting down in addition to increased depression. Also you look and feel terrible because your body has eaten all your muscle = super low self-esteem.
I almost get the sense that their therapists are encouraging this based on the idea of calories will help you gain weight. Eat as much high calorie food as you can.
Another aspect is using exposure therapy to eat fear foods. That has some benefits. Although I don't think they outweigh the cycle above.
