I PASSED THE TEXAS BAR EXAM!!! What’s better than graduating in 16 days with honors? Graduating in 16 days as a fucking licensed attorney!!! A lot of people knew but many of you all did not - I decided to take my bar exam early in February 2018 after listening to the advice of some amazing mentors. I went into bar prep 6 months ago with the knowledge that my journey was going to be more difficult, more nerve-wracking, and slightly more insane than others. Preparing for the bar while also being a law student, with classes and extracurriculars, was one of the most horrible experiences of my life. I can safely say that I have never studied, worked, or prayed as much as I did during bar prep. I lost blood, sweat, tears, weight, hair, and my mental stability throughout the entire ordeal. It ripped my values, my faith, and shook me to my very core. Most importantly, it made me wonder whether I was really meant to be a lawyer. The sole thing that kept me going those early mornings and late nights was that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life; this was the culmination of everything I have worked for since middle school and on god, I was going to do it. The support system I had with my amazing family and friends only made me want it that much more. Fast forward 6 months later and I’m so, so happy we stuck by it and saw the whole thing through: I PASSED THE BAR AND IM FINALLY A LAWYER. This week is all about the TroubleMAKERS—women who have bucked against harmful stereotypes, ridiculous laws, and boring, traditional gender roles.

Who better to start us off than The Notorious RBG? Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Ruth Bader Ginsburg founded the Women’s Rights Project in 1972 to take on cases of gender discrimination. In 1973, she made history when she argued her very first case in the Supreme Court, Frontiero v. Richardson. Frontiero was a female lieutenant in the Air Force. Unlike her male peers, she received no housing allowance for being a married officer, and her spouse had no access to the dental and medical services on base. Because of RBG’s arguments, and the overwhelming evidence she presented, the Supreme Court concluded, in an 8-1 decision, that this was a violation of her rights.

Introduction

My name is Helen and I am a (struggling) law student in beautiful Houston, Texas. I am currently a 3L, with interests in criminal law and immigration law. I’m graduating in May 2018 (thank God) and just finished taking the February 2018 Texas bar exam (THANK GOD), so hopefully I will be licensed and ready to hit the ground running come graduation!

I’ve always wanted to start this blog since entering law school in 2015, to document my journey in the legal field and to give advice/insight/lessons about what I experience as a law student and eventually, as a practicing attorney. However, the past 2-3 years have been spent studying my brains out and stressing beyond any healthy level, and now that I am close to graduating, I finally have the time (not really, I’m just procrastinating a lot more) and the motivation (kinda)  to start documenting this crazy journey of mine.

I have a lot of goals for this blog. Primarily, of course, I want to document everything I experience, as much as possible. I also want to make this blog a tool to help other prospective and current law students, who will be/are struggling as much as I am; I really hope it’ll make your lives easier, add some humor, and make this transition smoother, as law school is a different animal for sure. And finally, I want to connect with other new, young attorneys who are also making that transition from school to work and share experiences and lessons that will make me a better, more articulate, and more compassionate attorney trying to make it in a big world.

I hope that you’ll join me on this crazy journey of mine! Please feel free to ask questions, make suggestions, or to simply introduce yourself! This blog will be as much for me as it is for you. Together, we’ll make the world a better place, one amazing attorney at a time.
