I’ve been doing some “plein air” painting this summer. This was my first outdoor effort of the season, done at Union Bay natural preserve last month. About 5x7 inches, oil on canvas. My brushwork here was too fussy so I’ve been working on simplification with my subsequent work. I’ve been working on this drawing (pencil and white chalk), a master study of a painting by Edgar Payne. Payne’s original was a large piece about 50 inches wide, which I’ve shrunk to about 8 inches. For my (now at-home) atelier, I’ve been working on this copy of a portrait by William Sartain; pastel pencils and charcoal on paper. This is a bad photo of the work (iPhone doesn’t like my lighting), but also I feel I didn’t succeed greatly at this one. This was my first time using pastel pencils, and they don’t seem to jive well with charcoal. I couldn’t get true darks either.
