I didn't realize just how poorly I was treated in the north until I went back home in the south.

Everyone in the north would clock that I was southern, whether it be by my accent, my outfits, whatever, and they would instantly treat me as less intelligent. Many people would genuinely speak slower to me or explain basic concepts, especially when it came to politically leftist concepts or any topic relating to science. I constantly had to tell people "no, I already know this," and when I would be able to contribute to a conversation (because I know a lot about it!), I was met with shock, which is absolutely deranged! "Oh, the boy from the south can ACTUALLY join our talks about racism or biology or socialism or anthropology? No way!"

God forbid people's worth and intelligence isn't intrinsically tied to the place they were born! I noticed it and got immensely frustrated by it, but when I went back home for summer, I've really noticed just HOW MUCH it happened now that it's not happening at all anymore.

the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.

Hey so a small thing that literally everyone who sees this is capable of is correcting any “used to” statements about native people in this country.

“Native people used to live in this National Park” No. They still do.

“Native people used to tell these stories-” No. They still do.

“Native people used to use this plant as a natural remedy-” No. They still do.

Better yet, familiarize yourself with the tribes local to you. Odds are, they do not yet have federal recognition. You can still read the stories they have to share, you can share their ongoing battle for recognition with others, you can sign petitions and spread the word to others to do so as well. But do something.
