Here is an article from NPR about it (May 22, 2026):
Carolina Milanesi, an independent technology analyst, said Google is trying to make its cash cow business — search — richer and more personalized, and it will make shopping easier. But there is a risk that users may have fewer choices about what to click.
"Right now it's: I ask a question, I get a bunch of answers and I feel that I'm in control as to which answer I take, or if I'm looking for something, which product I'm going to end up buying. That is going to be less so going forward," she said.
Milanesi envisions AI-enabled search and agents proposing products to consumers — perhaps even those they have requested — but with less clarity or choice around where it's coming from.
"If you're going to say: 'I want a pair of Jordans, go find them,' you're not necessarily sure what steps have been taken and whether the AI has used a source or a store that was paid for and therefore came up in the search results," she said, "or if AI actually went and did their due diligence and picked the best for me as a customer."
And here's one from Time magazine (May 20, 2026):
While Google already has “AI Mode,” the company will now power the whole search bar through its new Gemini 3.5 Flash model.
Instead of the classic list of blue links, Google Search will now also generate a custom page with an AI-generated summary of what you’re searching about, which will then trigger a conversation with AI Mode on the main page, allowing users to ask follow-up questions—similar to the kind of layout you would see when opening ChatGPT.
And a little more from Time's article on how this may affect the websites that we are trying to search for:
When Google first started implementing AI-assisted results, news publishers warned of “catastrophic” impacts on the industry, much of which relies on Google search to drive users to their websites.
Last year, news websites saw significant traffic declines as chatbots increasingly replaced Google search as the primary way to find sites and ask questions.
Small businesses also noted drops in traffic to their sites from Google, which has traditionally delivered customers.
Lily Ray, vice president of SEO strategy & research at Amsive, a digital marketing agency, warned as early as last year that Google’s planned changes to search are “going to have a devastating impact on the Internet.”
“It will severely cut into the main source of revenue for most publishers and it will disincentivize content creators who rely on organic search traffic, which is millions of websites, maybe more,” she told Technology Magazine.
As you might be aware I have big feelings about all besnouted creatures, but recently something has been grating on me. Sometimes, when people draw a snout animal, they draw the snout as a nose with the mouth as a separate entity underneath. This is a stylistic choice I greatly dislike because a snout or trunk is, by definition
A COMBINATION OF THE NOSE AND UPPER-LIP.
You can see here that the snout is not a separate entity from the mouth in these mammals, but is a fleshy protuberance emanating from the upper jaw.
You can see in this illustration how a more anatomically accurate snout position gives an anthropomorphic pig a degree of charm that an inaccurate snout position does not.
Snout positioning can make or break a character design for me.
trying to get a general feel for the design aesthetic i want to pursue. not that it matters too much. fun secret: im a fashion pervert for stuff within the last decade and not medieval era stuff. so im very fast and loose with both time period and reality here. though "medieval au" is the shorthand im incorporating a lot of elizabethan, shakespearean, etc elements as well. and honestly its very renaissance focused but with more "out of time" military developments. we're both on the same page? ok yay.
going to go over things picture by picture. for thunderclan:
main emblematic colors are greens, golds and browns (though the latter is very neutral among clans) and their heraldic motif involves both lightning and trees.
very plain european robin hood-y armor, much more focused on chainmail and thick fabric. probably the most generic fantasy looking. most thunderclan warriors rely on ranged combat with bows and arrows so theres not a lot of heavy metal armor and also youre expected to be able to move around swiftly and quietly
thunderclan has a long streak of pseudo nepotism in terms of mentor-apprentice lineages and once firestar comes in it's much more apparent on a literal level. thus there's a significant distinction between the "nobility" (which is considered to be both descendants of the king, and high ranking officials like clerics and deputies) so firestar and sandstorm are probably very decked out in jewels and fancy clothes. squilf and leaf would be expected to follow suit but as a cleric leafpool is meant to remain very plain (though does have some subtle jewellery, at sandstorm's behest) and squirrelflight is just too rough and tumble to care. she distinctly does Not look very regal and from a young age set her sights on proving her capability Separate from her father's success. which she has done quite well
you may also notice leafpool is wearing maroons instead of the aforementioned common greens and golds. while nobles have more wiggle room with uniform color and design, again, as a cleric she is expected to be dressed very plainly. and maroon is, i think, the color that all clerics predominantly wear so that they can be identified from a distance: kind of like how a red cross symbol works, or more loosely how someone in all white scrubs is Probably a nurse
leaf and squilf here are drawn probably around latter half of new prophecy? squirrelflight has early graying hair as a nod to the white paw thing. and im sure scourge does too. both sisters have matching symmetrical moles also. its cutes.
tangential, but something im holding my head in my hands about while figuring out how to adapt this au: how does one justify constant triplets and twins and whatever in cat litters, in a Human context. while i think im going to allow for some wiggle room and let some sibling pairs Have that, i'm going to just spread out the events of certain arcs to allow for multiple pregnancies. for example: the three are probably the result of a couple of years worth of leafpool and crowfeather "hanging out" rather than an immediate termination of their relationship post-badger attack or whatever. jayfeather is probably the eldest (just to give leafpool room to figure out the blindness, i think it works best in a human context this way) and then the other two come in either as a twin pair or just. separate again. but relatively close in age. does this make leafpool an even lonelier figure than in canon? absolutely. i love her
so similarly i think leafpool is a year or two older than squilf
now onto riverclan, which i only drew silverstream for but still have extra ideas about:
very obsessed with 'vanity'. very artistic, very trade and entertainment focused, and extremely maritime. viewed as having a strong economy. effectively the Venice of warrior cats. pearls and gemstones are a huge thing and, as visible, feature a lot in the wear of nobles. funnily enough, they keep most of their fish for themselves and spread it among the kingdom
has an even larger scope of nobility than thunderclan: the family of the leader counts of course, but also the family of the deputy and clerics (such as mothers and fathers) are granted special status.
to justify their economic power i think they do a lot of business with non-clan kingdoms in the area (ie kittypets and rogues) and have a little less of a xenophobic mindset than other clans. or rather their xenophobia manifests in wanting to take advantage of foreigners rather than casting them away entirely – which is what makes them ripe for tigerstar's takeover eventually
main colors include blues, and red is specifically reserved for nobility. green and white accents pop up.
they're probably the more bulky armor big sword slash type of guys. viewed as very strong physically
notable for silverstream over here: much like in canon she has a very strong "riverclan princess" reputation and unlike canon, she actually is exempt from fighting and warfare as are a lot of other nobility that do not have a direct combative role (ie the deputy and leader). she's known for her poetry and general "beauty" and spends a lot of time surveying the theater of riverclan, because in riverclan they have lots of time for entertainment! at least the nobles do!
this is also why she gets to have cute little makeup – compared to thunderclan nobility, which mostly prioritises kohl and simplistic eye decorum as seen with sandstorm
meets graystripe at a gathering where he makes a fool of himself and expresses 0 formality, it endears her to him because she also has a bit of a rebellious streak due to her father's protectiveness, they strike up a bond that way and keep meeting in secret, etc etc its very pride and prejudice-y
probably unfortunately bearer of the birthing twins curse because its very hard to have both feathertail and stormfur exist otherwise. her birthingdeath is very dramatic and a vital part of the narrative.
i have to go get food so im gonna be brief about windclan:
as i mentioned, very arabian peninsula-levant based. regarded as a "moorish" kingdom (pun completely not intended.) even if theres a fair share of very pale and "white" native windclanners. i want to say its a very iberian islamic era sort of thing, a lot of the whiter members of windclan are equivalent to spanish, portuguese and french – in reality probably coming in from the riverclan area centuries ago
also inherit a bit of central asian culture, it makes sense in my mind with the huge plainlands kind of thing. i think in this world they have an even spread of that and more dry desert-y sort of land. even as a kid i imagined windclan in a more sandy sort of zone just because the strongest winds i ever experienced as a child were in the form of sandstorms lol
they have a lot of very practical wear, very flowy but heat conserving, multilayered armor, mild incorporation of metal... a huge part of their culture is horse husbandry because i think thats their main thing in combat! to make them a little more special than thunderclan who has kind of swept away the "swift quick combat" kind of thing.
very military focused hierarchy where the only 'nobility' is the people in charge of combat. combat prowess is the only thing that gets you anywhere and if you expect special treatment because youre the cousin of the king's uncle or whatever, you're not gonna get it. most honor comes from proving oneself in battle AND, potentially, being the apprentice of someone who is renowned already
tallstar's rule kind of adhered to this, but since he was a king more focused on negotiation and trade than warfare, the vibe was a little different: it become more of a "if any of us can become great, we are all great" kind of a pseudo-communism thing. meanwhile in the tunneler/runner era it was much more of a "you have to work to become great", much more actual warrior cats-y
tallstar's general passivity is also visible in how he presents himself: while most past windclan rulers were also similarly decked out in jewellery and elaborate wear, he adopted the exterior of a common poet more than anything else. while this endeared him to his clan, it was viewed as ridiculous by people like brokenstar and tigerstar
was going to draw mudclaw here but instead here's an early new prophecy onewhisker to specifically demonstrate the Common military wear of windclan. for a deputy like mudclaw, it admittedly wouldn't be too different, but would feature some medals and flashier plating. i think mudclaw in particular would want to compensate for tallstar's humility
main colors are silvers, bronzes, yellows and whites. wearing gold is seen as avaricious. heraldry symbols include the north star and clouds.
taking windclan's word-of-god starclan connection more seriously here, i think they host the aforementioned clerical training grounds. not technically host because its neutral territory, but it is closest to theirs and was originally their land before they gave it up as a holy ground. certain windclan warriors will point back to this story if there's arguments about territory or conflict between clerics!
as a final point: kind of implied, but since in this au the clans are moreso kingdoms with less time dedicated to actual physical warfare and more involvement in culture and more "passive" war tactics like espionage, there's a bigger focus on the arts. it drifts in intensity among clans. in riverclan i think there's a couple of warriors who do present themselves as actors and musicians and have little knowledge of fighting – in windclan, leisure activities are seen as downtime and its often up to elders and even clerics to provide entertainment in the form of oration, writing or even painting, ceramics, etc. as a result, i think attitudes towards disabled characters change a bit, but in thunderclan where the majority of ableism happens, i think the "leisure class" is looked down upon a bit in comparison to riverclan, where its seen as a viable career path that is fully fledged and valid to want to partake in. and so, in a case like crookedstar's, some of his conflict may come from his mother forcing him into an entertainment position to 'protect him': which is a little different from canon, but introduces some new volumes of commentary on things like 'freakshowism', subtle condescension towards the arts, and more biting commentary on the classic warrior cats plotline "uplifting! the disabled want to die horribly in war too!"
anyway hope this is as interesting to other people as it is to me. ill do more sketches probably. i do need to figure out shadowclan and skyclan
