Careers
Hello all! Today in this post, I thought I’d share a little about my struggles in choosing a career when I was younger, in case there was anyone else out there who may be experiencing a similar dilemma to what I did!
I’ll begin by saying that my parents have always had a considerable influence on my life and life choices, particularly when I was a young child. I remember how they used to tell me that I would be a doctor and nothing else. At first, I didn’t quite know what to think of this, however I promised to do my very best whilst in school, and that I would graduate and be accepted into a prestigious university as they had wished. From there on I would become a successful doctor and pursue that career for the rest of my life. It was not until much later in my adolescence that I had begun to question why I had to follow this path. I remember that I had asked my parents one evening why they insisted I follow this career and they simply told me that it was the best option for my life.
Despite trying to believe what my parents insisted, I became torn between what I truly wanted for my life, and what they wished for me. After deciding to do some research and learn about what being a doctor entailed, I was not as hopeful about this career. There were numerous other industries which I took great interest in, however I was still torn between pleasing my parents and what I truly wanted for my future. After much deliberation, I had confronted my family about the issue, because I knew that if I had followed a career already chosen for me, that I would regret not speaking up and would be very unhappy. In the end, my decision to pursue my desired career payed off, as I am currently a successful film director working with incredible people all around the world.
My key message in choosing to publish this story, was that it is incredibly important to acknowledge and follow your own conscience. Parents can have a great influence on children from a very young age, and this often remains with people well into their adult lives. Although it is important to respect your parents, it is also important that you follow what you know is best for you, and what will make you happiest.
