a lot of pieces of media will show characters catching fireflies with just their bare hands. in some cases they will just land on the persons fingers. to gently be placed inside of a jar..

for people who live in areas who don’t have fireflies, i want you to know that is not made up or exaggerated for those scenes. fireflies are really like that. they are slow and not cautious at all. while camping i would just walk up to one flying in the air and grab it. and it would sit on my hands like “oh ok.” they are my friends.

If you’ve never taken the bus as your primary mode of transportation you should know that a ten minute drive is like a one hour bus ride.

And sometimes something just isn’t near a bus stop so you’ve gotta take the closest one to it and walk for 20 minutes.

Just something to keep in mind, I guess. Especially if you live in a big sprawling metropolis. There’s people all around you taking five times as long to get anywhere because they can’t or won’t drive for whatever reason.

This post isn’t purely to complain. I like taking the bus way more than I like driving. It’s way way cheaper and less stressful for me. But I think a lot of people don’t realize how inaccessible so many things are to those without a car. I can’t just pop over to Costco in the evening. I need four hours in a row completely free to do that. If you want to meet up at a bar on the other side of town in 30 minutes I can’t do that unless you’re driving. I think a lot of folks just don’t know this.

This is an excellent point. Not to mention the amount of crap people leave on sidewalks. Recently someone in my neighborhood put a giant decorative rock right in the middle of the sidewalk????? What kind of evil do you have to be to do that? Now I have to climb over that and people in wheelchairs can’t even get through here anymore.

Fun fact! If your (United States) city has a bus system they are legally required to provide paratransit for disabled persons within a minimum of 3/4 mile away from every fixed route stop. Paratransit WILL pick you up at your door and drop you where you need to be, as a door-to-door service. You are not required to have a wheelchair for this service. Paratransit can sometimes need to be scheduled ahead depending on the size of your city, but it is a good option for those with mobility issues!

Oh yeah my brother uses one of those because his mental disability makes it hard for him to navigate bus routes. He has to schedule it in advance though.

By the way, if you or someone you care for is autistic you might not know just how many disability services you qualify for. If your particular manifestation of autism makes it difficult for you to navigate bus routes and/or drive safely you might qualify for something like this.

some autistic people stim by breaking things. some people (hi) like throwing stuff or twisting or snapping things. some people like ripping paper. some people (hi) like squishing or crushing objects.

this is a morally neutral trait. it does not make us bad people. we aren't doing it with malicious intent. we don't want to break the thing; that isn't our goal at all! it's just the way that we prefer to interact with physical objects is not compatible with certain classes of object. it's sensory seeking behavior, not trying to destroy things on purpose.

i like squishing and twisting things, which is fine when what i'm twisting or squishing is a soft toy or a piece of wire or wax that isn't used for anything else. it's just not ok when i do that with my roommate's expensive handmade candles.

what works is when we have objects that it's ok to do our preferred activities with. i have lots of squishies and plushies, and i save twist ties from packaging. if someone in your life likes ripping paper, give them old newspapers, or teach them how to recycle paper by hand by ripping old paper up and soaking it in water and making new paper with it. if they like throwing things, give them stuffed animals or balls and plenty of space.

also it's ok to set boundaries about what we're allowed to hold. i'm no longer allowed to hold my roommate's expensive handmade candles. this is a boundary that works for both of us. don't put important legal documents within reach of your cousin who likes to tear paper and can't always resist the urge. being understanding doesn't mean letting us wreck your stuff! it just means acknowledging that this is a sensory seeking behavior, not me being an asshole.

Tips for kids online

Pseudonyms! Use them! Even if it’s a nickname, a favorite character’s name, a letter, your username, use a pseudonym. Especially if you have a unique name

Private information is PRIVATE. Last name, age, full birthday. Things that could be used to identify you should not be shared. Remember those “enter anyone’s name and learn everything about them” websites? They aren’t kidding around, and they’re dangerous.

Your house is your business. Don’t share your home address, school name, city, even sharing what state you live in could be risky. There’s no reason for people online to need to know this, there’s no reason for people online to ask for it. This is a red flag

Pictures are worth a thousand words. Take note of what’s in pictures you post. Can you see a state flag? A pet’s collar with a home address on it? Does that screenshot have your phone number in it? Be careful with EXACTLY what you post.

Once you post it, it’s not yours anymore. Anyone on the internet can share a post, take screenshots, repost to other websites, send to other people, etc. Once you post something, what happens to it is out of your hands. Make sure you be careful with what you post.

Face and voice can reveal a lot about you. They can reveal age, agab, in some cases they can be used to determine where you live (accents anyone?) be careful.
