My fave #real hc for hollanov is that Ilya is a prissy little rich city boy who doesn’t know how to change a lightbulb or what the right footwear is for a hike or where he would even begin if he wanted to put up some new shelves. His dad never cared to teach him any of this stuff and he never really had any reason to learn. Whereas Shane grew up spending his summers in the Canadian countryside, swimming in the lake and Being At One With Nature, and his parents were very present and probably enjoyed showing him how to do these things.

And we #know they both have insane competence kinks so when Shane opens a toolbox to put up a new shelf, Ilya is suddenly questioning his whole life bc who the hell gets all hot and bothered by a Phillips head screwdriver?!?!

Ok so @smolbirbsinatrenchcoat and I were talking about children's movies and how Shane and Ilya probably never watched many classics of their generation (Shane because he can't focus on anything that is not hockey and Ilya because he grew up in a conservative family in Russia. That child probably only saw Hedgehog in the Fog on loop. Would not recommend)

But like. Once they're out and everything they're invited to dinner by the Pikes and their many children who love uncle Shane and uncle Ilya. And they tell the stories of their favourite movies to them. And when Hayden realizes that neither Ilya nor Shane has seen The Lion King so they HAVE to watch it now (who cares if they're grow ass adults now) (I know Jackie is very tired(tm) of her husband) (and that Ilya will call Hayden a baby for the rest of the evening)

But like. Ilya watching children's movies with the Pikes. Ilya getting invested in children's movies with the Pikes. Ilya commenting on every frame and on every decision the characters take. Shane not understanding anything. Hayden immediately regretting everything. Please tell me you got the vision.

Honestly? Honestly the idea of Ilya Rozanov sitting himself down at twelve years old and saying I have GOT to get out of this country. It killed my mother. It's going to kill me. And then growing up a little bit and realizing some Things about himself and saying I have GOT to get out of this country. I have tried and tried and for some reason people keep Knowing What I Am. Ilya, young bisexual man with an apparently pretty clocky affect to his speaking voice. A strong young man with a natural and lovely flamboyance in him, a sweetness he tries to smother and the ability to play hockey like it was bestowed upon him by GOD. I've GOT to get out of here, he thinks to himself. And then he leaves (but not really) does some more growing up and he falls in love only he can't let himself be in love because the lead weight of this country is still tied to him and he thinks I have GOT TO GET OUT OF HERE. Then his father dies and the man he loves says "Come with me" and Ilya says I am NEVER going back!! I will wear my mother's cross and I will think of her every day and she will forgive me for never visiting her grave because her beautiful boy got OUT. I will go to a place where I am loved by a man A MAN who I love more than I ever thought I was allowed. Who holds my face and my hands and my heart. I will find a home for myself in his arms. I will never go fucking back.
