alright everyone is being sassy but nobody has brought up the actual reason why scientists are interested in the titanic in the notes
Per wikipedia:
The Titanic was made of steel, presumably to resist corrosion (i mean. thats why boats are made of steel i assume) but even when iron/steel rusts people did not expect to find like. decomposition. bacteria are EATING the titanic.
and there's wood furniture from the titanic that isn't decaying. hell, there are wood ships at the bottom of the ocean that archaeologists study. so the expectation people have for the titanic is not that the steel would decompose at the bottom of the ocean. Even in 100 years, since there are much more ancient preserved wooden ships iirc.
(im not particularly knowledgeable about ships, i just had heard about the science going on around the titanic so i wanted to clarify that on this post for people)
Not a marine biologist but biologist enough to weigh in on this. The reason we have iron eating bacteria but not wood eating bacteria at the bottom of the ocean is simple. Hydrothermal vents release a cocktail of different mineral ores into the ocean. And bacteria and other organisms evolved alongside those so they evolved to digest these, like iron or other metal ores
Wood however does not exist at the bottom of the ocean since it basically never sinks down, even when logs are flushed out into the ocean they basically never end up at the ocean floor. So there's no bacteria that evolved to decompose lignin, which is already complex enough to decompose on the surface. And that's why wooden ships or the furniture on the Titanic stay intact for hundreds of years or longer.
Okay, but I remember reading a magazine stating that the titanic would basically be gone by now because of the rust eating the ship.
The sister ship HMHS Britannic is still perfectly preserved because of the way it sank, and partly in due to the coral that has grown around it keeping the structure in tact I believe was the reason.
So lemme get this straight, the Titanic is a whalefall, the Britannic is a biological mummy, and all the wood ships that sink into the deep ocean are preserved incorrupt because nothing can eat them.
I swear, some of you people somehow manage to possess all of the three most unfortunate character traits someone can have: a) kinda stupid, b) obnoxiously contrarian, c) deeply annoying.
akram salim is maybe the character of all time. well-dressed, polite and unassuming man capable of terrible violence. literally looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you. was "sort of" a cop in syria and no, he won't be expanding on that. widowed single dad to daughters he loves but doesn't understand. casual brutality is easy for him but he never loses control. WILL stop to pet the nose of a dog statue because it's good luck. sarcastic as fuck but never even cracks a smile. has a knife and knows how to use it. has absolute zero ego and goes out of his way to reassure the cop who previously investigated their cold case that he did a great job and it wasn't his fault the case wasn't solved earlier. helps his egotistical asshole boss calm down from a panic attack and then uses said boss's vulnerable position to enforce a boundary in a way that is both polite and threatening. and he bakes :)
I know the (for now, relatively small) Dept. Q fandom is mostly talking about Carl Morck, but I for one am already a BIG fan of Akram Salim.
Like, he is a Syrian refugee with a mysterious backstory and insane combat and detective skills because of that. But he is also the sweetest soul, used to be a stay-at-home dad for his two daughters, as his wife is a doctor, and he brings sweets when applying for a job.
Top tier character design! Also, I'm a big fan of his fashion style!
Watched Thursday Murder Club. I'm putting my ramblings under a cut because..well, yeah. Na. Should have been a series.
I'll start with the positives:
The main 4 were cast perfectly. I've said before that Helen Mirran was always my first choice for Elizabeth, and she smashed it. I was even won over by Pierse Brosnan as Ron (where were the West Ham shirts though??). David Tennant as Ian Ventham was just as nasty and sleazy as he should have been, and Naomi Ackie as Donna was just delightful. I do love the portrayal of Ibrahim (my beloved ❤️), and Joyce.
The setting for Coopers Chase was absolutely beautiful, but I'm not sure why they made it like a block of flats, rather than an retirement village as it was meant to be. And props for including the abundance of Llamas.
However...
I honestly don't understand why they changed the whole drugs thing to human trafficking. I felt like it just shifted the whole story, and not in a good way. Why make Bobby Tanner a part owner of CC? It just makes no sense. Book Ventham had the money already to do CC, he didn't need a 'cash boost'. Why make Tanner a genuinely nasty person? In the book, he was a decent guy who made bad decisions in his past.
The trafficking completely changed Bodgans character, having him kill Curren for that reason, rather than finally taking revenge for him killing his friend. And having Bodgan arrested at the end? Why? He feels like such a different character compared to the book. He was strong, independent, and loyal, and the film made him seem helpless. He came to England of his own accord, not because he was trafficked.
I know they had to cut bits out of the story, otherwise the film would be about 4 hours long. I was expecting the Playfairs to be cut out. But why cut out all of Bernard's story? And Father Mackies too? They were both such good characters in the book, who helped make the story interesting, and gave the team actual diversions from the truth. I would much rather have their story's in the fim than Jason Ritchie getting arrested, and then confessing to sleeping with Venthams wife. I was expecting to cry over Bernard's death, and over Mackie telling his forbidden love story.
I feel like book Ventham was the least likable character in the book, the film didn't have to change that.
And why make Chris so angry all the time? He was a much better character in the books in my opinion. And Ibrahim did seem like he had less to do than the other three members of the TMC.
They better not touch the other books, because if they do, I shall riot.
I have no idea why they changed the ending it completely ruined the character, and any future thing because Bogdan is so important. Why did he get arrested but the man who has chopped off many peoples fingers, Illegally brought people into the country and then forced the to do manual labour for him get off scot free!
btw the katy perry/bezos' girlfriend/other four irrelevant billionaires 10 minute space stunt was not the first all female expedition no matter how much they try to market it as such. the first all female mission was in 1963 with soviet cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova, Irina Solovyova and Valentina Ponomaryova - all three of which were working class and had to pass incredibly hard exams to be chosen from 400 potential candidates. just in case we started falling for the propaganda machine again
