what the fuck
i’m just gonna take this post for a moment so i can rant but like
i Hate how entitled adults can feel over a child’s hair!
it started when i was young myself, i wanted a mohawk, but my dad didn’t approve of that look on a “girl”, and insisted i’d regret such a bold cut. at 16 i was finally given full autonomy over my own head.
but then i have a son and everyone around us is trying to keep his hair short. when we finally moved out just me my partner and him, i told him he doesn’t need to get any haircuts he doesn’t want.
so he starts growing it out, it’s still short but coming on mid-length. his teacher makes a point to tell me it’s getting long as if i don’t have eyes. i hear her walking out with him one day talking to him about haircuts, as if to coax him into one. eventually i get child services called on me for ‘forcing a transgender lifestyle’ over what i can only assume is from a combination of me drawing cute ponies on his valentine box and letting him go to school in a ponytail.
he kept it short for awhile after but told me he wanted to grow it out again, so i let him of course. he comes home one day after getting a haircut at his grandpa’s and tells me he didn’t Want the haircut.
i ask why he got it then and learned he was bribed with a promise of a surprise IF he cut his hair.
tl;dr people need to back the hell up off of children and let them have owership of what’s on THEIR body! /rant
Same thing about getting a child to curl or straighten their hair. Or do anything with it. Just let kids have control over their bodies.
This happened to me when I was little too!! Growing up I had naturally tight Shirley Temple curls. The only problem was that you can’t get a hair brush through it if your life depended on it until it grew out over a few years.
but This One Lady from church decided that leaving my hair messy and curly was child abuse and threatened to call social services on my family every damn time she saw me until one day she was the designated kid watcher and ho boy my momma tells me i came out with tears in my eyes and greasy slicked down hair and that’s where she ends the story because i think my mother beat her ass but yeah.
Leave kids hair alone.
I’m going to be honest, parents who are super-controlling of their children’s hair creep me the fuck out and I’m not entirely certain why except that I get a vague feeling they kind of relegate them to, “annoying talking doll” status.
I loved my daughter’s long blond hair. It was thick and wavy and beautiful but when she told me she wanted it cut short ‘like a boy’(she was four) I took her to the salon and let her whack it off.
The stylist was skeptical, ‘are you sure?” and the thing is, she said this to me, not my daughter. So I asked my girl ‘are you sure you want it cut short?’ She was. The hair went. The stylist acted nervous most of the way through like she was waiting for one of us to burst into tears, but it looked cute! And my daughter loved it! (And it’s been short ever since.)
Autonomy over your hair is bodily autonomy and we as a culture need to start holding bodily autonomy as sacred
there is a reason that so many of us who’ve experienced trauma will reclaim control over our bodies and our selves by cutting and dying our hair. it’s part of us. it’s part of our expression. that’s vitally important to people, especially kids, who are still early in the process of learning how they fit into the world around them.
For some reason, “stop enforcing your gender identity and sexual orientation on children” never applies to cis-het people who are the only ones actually enforcing it.
About this:
Some reasons, not exhaustive:
Parents tightly controlling this shit is damaging and super often indicative of sexism or queerphobia they will begin imposing or are already imposing on the child.
Early form of indoctrination into boys vs. girls behavior; it begins super young when the child is very malleable. Sets the stage for strict gender roles.
A parent who does not respect their child’s autonomy over something as trivial as their hair is absolutely not going to defend their child from other assaults on their autonomy, unless those assaults are property crimes that challenge or might lead their child to challenge their ownership of the child’s body.
It’s disgusting.
It also goes for life partners. Controlling someone’s appearance either directly, or indirectly through repeated “hints” and shit-talking people who don’t meet their standards is at the very least toxic, and sometimes it is downright abusive. There’s a reason “woman cuts her hair in a way that she knows you don’t like” is seen as a “warning sign” that your wife might “leave you.” The hold is breaking. I did it, progressively, as things spiraled down. It wasn’t rebellion. It was reclamation. (Also me realizing that I really didn’t like having long hair. This is way better.
By the way, cutting someone’s hair without consent is assault, same as punching them, and in many places it is legally recognized as such. Get their asses.
I would prefer there not be Nazis in hardcore, but to my subculture’s credit, left wing hxc kids usually skip the “erm sweetie you can’t be hardcore and conservative” drivel and go right to beating up the skinheads
There’s a reason the song is called “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” and not “Nazi Punks Aren’t Real”
There are many people who don’t share this sentiment, but I have an appreciation for when a fanfic is so separated from canon that it could’ve easily been its own original novel, and yet the author was only ever going to put that much energy into it if their favourite characters got to be there
I think there’s a difference between “the author stripped the media of everything it had to replace it with something easy” and “the author thought up a concept they really really like and are bestowing it upon the character like a medal”
hi i want to talk about the blatant inequality that the new gender rules of hockey USA may cause. and how this may affect the future of womens hockey.
released on april 1st of this year, usa hockey has released a policy stating that all leagues and teams under it's governance must restrict players to their assigned sex based team (excluding coed leagues and teams). this is not only incredibly disruptive to just trans athletes, but moreso female athletes
as you probably know, hockey is a predominantly male sport, so most local and smaller teams are more likely to be all-male teams. in the past, girls have been able to get around this by joining male teams as a female, playing the same game.
this is no longer possible, and female athletes, even beer league or low level leagues, are restricted to teams, leagues and games that are either female only, or coed. both of which are hard to find and usually are only low level--meaning it restricts a lot of girls and women from playing at a higher level.
most olympic level or professional hockey players in the PWHL were able to reach their level via playing in boys leagues and teams, because girls teams weren't available. with this new policy, it could be harder than ever before for girls to play and access hockey.
despite girls hockey growing exponentially in the past couple of years, this may prove to be a bigger challenge for girls than any actual trans athletes. this ban not arguably harms more athletes
the policy's an act of hostility towards women's sports and gender equality in sports. it may not explicitly state that it will put such barring limitations on women, but it does and will.
One of the big things I think these 'it should be acceptable to leave concrit on fanfic even if the author isn't looking for it' people are missing is that giving constructive feedback is also a skill and they usually don't have it
whenever anyone mentions how the US midwest is empty and barren and has nothing in it i wanna ring a big bell and scream "THAT DID NOT HAPPEN PASSIVELY THE LAND IS NOT INHOSPITABLE IT WAS WIPED BARE BY AN ONGOING GENOCIDE AND IS UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF EXTRACTIONISTS"
I know ao3's only supposed to be down for a couple hours but occasional reminder that my work (and that of many others) is also posted on squidgeworld and neocities.
What if we defunded public transit and closed malls and raise the cost of fast food and made sure that summer temperatures hit record highs and that winter temperatures hit record lows and reduced the purchasing power of minimum wage jobs so that it’s harder for kids to buy cars? Would these be ideal circumstances to make it illegal for teens to socialize with each other on the Internet?
so in the 2003 Aquaman series they introduce a new backstory for archvillain Black Manta in which the entire reason for his (hyper)fixation on destroying Aquaman's life was severely maltreated autism, which Aquaman then cures him of with his magic water hand to completely redeem him. and this is obviously insanely stupid and ill-conceived and genuinely hateful, but given all of that, this is still one of the funniest speech balloons i've ever read in a comic. me @ myself when i remember how i acted in high school or whatever
i'm so sorry but also delighted to report that after black manta betrays aquaman it gets even funnier
not to sound like the friend that's too woke but why does this police station toyset for a 5yr old need a weapons safe full of tiny toy-sized automatic rifles. just asking.
Seeing how folks react to unhoused people when you've been unhoused is so interesting. Oh, is that person living on the street being "rude"? Hm. I wonder why the person who hasn't been able to eat or shower or lay their head down on anything other than concrete isn't being very nice. I wonder why the person reduced to eating out of trash cans and who can't get anyone to speak to them like a human being is snippy. Huh. I wonder what's eating at them, wow.
cybertrucks are so amazing to me. sure it may be unsafe to drive and unimaginably expensive and ugly as shit but at least everyone who sees you driving it thinks youre a nazi
did you have to use that photo for that
i mean good on them...? still paired with that image thats uh. interesting
I respect the fuck out of this. The whole site is trying its hardest to go against every selling point the dog robots have as its selling points.
The dog robots are supposed to be autonomous, threehalves is explicitly only for being piloted by a human. The giant horns make it difficult for this machine to enter through doorways, and that is the point. Coupled with the built-in weak points, it is very easy to disable this thing, so it can't be used by the police or the military effectively.
OP alluded to how unsettling the machine looks, and I believe that it was a concious decision; the robot dogs have garnered sympathy due to their apperance, which makes it easier for the police to morally justify their use. This thing? You're not gonna get many people to sympathise with it. The only people who would are monster and-or robot fuckers, and I believe these circles generally understand that a machine cannot be trusted (though of course many would willingly approach it for pervert reasons (positive) knowing full well it's a bad idea).
oh yeah i saw everyone on tiktok freaking out about "if it can't harm humans why does it come with instructions to kill it" it's a safety feature in case of an emergency or malfunction where it needs to be quickly deactivated. "why is it so big and demonic why does it look like that" it's a safety feature so it can do dangerous labor and so you don't feel bad about killing it. "it was designed not to be able to follow you through doors?? why the fuck would it do that that's scary" it's a safety feature so you can't get cornered or have the person piloting it misuse it. "it doesn't have hands but it can attach CHAINSAWS to its limbs???" it's MADE TO WITHSTAND WILDFIRES IT'S NOT GONNA USE IT ON YOU "this thing gives me such bad vibes i do not trust it" GOOD!!! IT'S A ROBOT!!! IT IS A TOOL!!! IT'S A REALLY BIG AND COMPLICATED MACHINE THAT IS DESIGNED TO GO IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS WHICH WOULD MEAN IT COULD POTENTIALLY MALFUNCTION! USE YOUR BRAIN!!!
admittedly i do think that picture of it standing in the doorway with glowing white eyes is like comically frightening but it's SUPPOSED to be so you don't feel bad for it or approach it
I just watched Glass Onion and I'd seen the Mona Lisa Discourse and the "but hydrogen doesn't work that way" discourse, but I need to know if anyone has brought up the definitely intentional and objectively funniest departure from reality in the movie:
Kombucha is a live culture. That's the whole point- it's why it gets marketed as a probiotic. It's kind of like growing sourdough starter on sweet tea instead of flour. The culture used to ferment it contains yeast that breaks the sugar down into alcohol, but it also contains bacteria that break alcohol down into acetic acid, which is what gives it its taste.
For Jared Leto to have brewed 9% ABV hard kombucha, he has to have either a) messed up the process of making it so badly that it isn't really kombucha anymore, or b) added so much alcohol after the fact that it would probably kill off most of the culture.
In other words, Jared Leto's hard kombucha is the most thematically appropriate form of alcohol the movie could possibly contain.
