I think some day when my villain arc will begin I will write a fantasy novel which will involve coats of arms and said coats of arms will be perfectly described in the grammar of english heraldry.
Because I am having a grand old time learning about heraldry and how one may correctly describe a coat of arms and some of those terms are completely impossible to visualise unless you are like. In The Thing.

reading nabokov is maddening because his writing is so playful and evocative and effortless and english isn't even his first language. he's doing things in a second language most people could spend their lives trying and failing to replicate in their first language. makes me feel like this
"my very photogenic mother died in a freak accident (picnic, lightning) when i was three" like come ON how did you write the funniest sentence ever by adding a two word parenthetical. leave something for the rest of us

So when I read this post something that immediately came to mind was a (possibly Russian? I'm not sure, but I seem to remember that the author was Soviet, even though this could be my brain messing with me) 20th century book I read a couple of years ago that was EXACTLY this very thing.
If you have any idea of what book I am thinking of, PLEASE tell me, because I can't remember the title for the life of me.
What I remember about the book:
Definitely 20th century, probably Soviet or Western European writer
I think it was a little bit political satire (as in satire that requires you to understand the political climate of that time and place to understand the humour)
Not very long
As the post above states, set in a magic university? with the university? business being the main focus
EDIT: It has been found, thank you all!! (I will be making a post elaborating on this book in the near future, I just need to re-read it)
