I am tearful as I write this. I’ve been crying all week. At my desk at work, in my bed alone and in the arms of my amazing friends. The events of this week have brought back traumatic memories that I’ve pushed into the deepest darkest depths of my mind. I feel empowered to say that I too am a victim of sexual assault. I kept this a secret until about 2 years ago when I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and started going to therapy. I was young, I was afraid and I thought I would be blamed for what happened to me. Not by my family, they are loving and amazing. They have been and always will be my #1 fans in life. I know that if I had spoken up they would have pulled me from that situation immediately. But I was too young to understand what happened and as I grew up I taught myself to toughen up. Because worse has happened to other women, and it could have been worse for me right? I’m still young, I still don’t understand and I’m still afraid. I’m anxious and I overthink every situation, plan out every interaction and think of every scenario. I walked into a party last night and the first thing I did was scan the room. I knew where the exits were, and I made sure I got a look at everyone in the room. I do this everywhere I go. I don’t do this because I’m trying to find the cutest woman at the bar. I do this because I am fearful, and anxious and constantly worried about what could happen to me or my friends. No one should live their lives like this. I know there aren’t any details about what happened to me in this message. I’m not ready to share with anyone who doesn’t already know. But I hope this empowers someone else to seek help.
