Tears fell from the boy with brown curly hair as he backed out of his room, away from his so called girlfriend. Not believing the words that left her mouth. He didn't want to believe it. He hoped and prayed that it was a dream that he would wake up in his bed and everything would be okay. He violently rubbed his eyes in an attempt to rid his tears. He felt his heart get shattered into millions of tiny pieces.
He couldn't believe that someone he loved so much could hurt him. He couldn't believe that the person he thought loved him would hurt him in so many ways.
He felt as if his world had just crashed. He felt empty as he walked away ignoring the calls for his name. He didn't want to hear it anymore. He didn't want his heart to break anymore then it already had. Soon enough as he walked rain started to pour.
The boy came to a stop and looked up for a second, letting the rain fall flat on his face.
His eyes burned and his chest ached. He had nowhere to go so he just kept walking. The boy walked until he stumbled upon a cabin. He noticed light illuminating the cabin.
He didn't realize how cold he was until he had come to a full fledged stop. His feet ached, soaked from head to toe, and eyes burned.
"Oh my god!” Is all he heard before his body gave out in exhaustion.
He opened his eyes hearing movement coming from right beside him. But being blinded by the light above him, he closed his eyes and felt sleep take over not that long after.
He was exhausted. He was exhausted from the tears he shed, from how empty his heart felt, from how long he must have been walking.
When he opened his eyes again there was no light above him. There was still light but it wasn't above him. The curly haired boy slowly sat up, letting his feet hit the ground for the first time in almost a week.
"Oh, finally you're awake." He heard a soft voice speak and he looked behind him. He saw a girl with round cheeks and a soft smile, walking towards him with a plate of food.
"For a second there, I believed you had died. You were pretty out of it when I found you." She set the plate on the table in front of him and looked back at the boy on the couch.
"W-where am I?" He asked. His voice was rough and scratchy from not using it in a while.
The girl with brown hair and round cheeks, who seemed a little younger than him, just handed him a cup of water before answering,
"You're at my cabin, well my family’s cabin. I found you last week after you collapsed. You looked broken and exhausted so my Moms helped bring you inside. They treated some of your injuries that you had from collapsing in a pile of branches. I helped warm you up and got rid of a nasty fever you had. You've been asleep since." The girl explained with a small smile.
“Also, your phone kept ringing with phone calls. Someone left a ton of voicemails." She added as she passed the boy with baby-like features his phone.
"T-thank you, ah- what is your name?"
"Right! My name is Nini. What's your name?"
"Ricky.”
Two years later
"Ricky!" Nini exclaimed laughing. The boy, Ricky, had wrapped his arms around her and spun her around. “Let go!” She giggled.
"Sorry, no can do, Nini." Ricky laughed as the girl struggles. People around the park were staring at the two but they didn't care. They were having fun so they weren't going to let stares ruin that at all.
"I- I have to go to work, Ricky!" Nini tried and turned her body to face the boy. Ricky looked straight into Nini’s eyes and smiled. He always loved her eyes since the moment his eyes opened when they first met. Nini has never asked what had happened that night because of how broken the boy had looked.
"Fine, leave me. Have fun on your adventure." Ricky pouts letting her go. Nini backed up and just smiled softly at Ricky.
"I will see you later, okay? I'm bringing Kourtney and another friend over for dinner." Nini says linking her hand with Ricky’s. The two weren't together, they were friends and did a lot of skinship.
"I'm leaving now. I will see you later, Rick." Nini walks away and let's her hand fall from Ricky’s.
Ricky watched the girls back as she disappeared from sight. Ricky turned around and began walking back towards his apartment. It wasn't a long walk back from the park so he made it back in reasonable time.
He walked into his apartment and saw his friend, Big Red, sleeping on the couch.
"Big Red, hey. Get up." He shook the younger awake. When the ginger haired boy opened his eyes, he sent a glare toward Ricky.
"I don't want too." He groans and rolled over only to almost fall off the couch but Ricky caught him. "I hate you. Why couldn't you let me sleep?" The boy grumbled. Ricky just chuckled at him walking into the kitchen.
"I had to wake you up at some point." Ricky answered as he looked in the fridge for something to eat. He had to go food shopping since his fridge was empty. "We're going to the store. I need food." Ricky walked into the living room grabbing his car keys.
"Can I just stay here?"
"Nope, let's go."
———
The evening came by fast and Ricky had made enough dinner for Big Red, Nini, along with her two friends, and himself. Big Red lived with Ricky since he didn't like the university dorms and his roommate was not the best.
Nini lived only down the hall but was mostly has Ricky’s, since they were best friends.
“Dude, set the table so I can get the door." He told Big Red.
Ricky set the rag he had in his hand down and walked towards the door. When Nini came over with friends, she knocked and never barged in like normal. It was something they've grown a costume to.
After Ricky opened the door he sent a smile towards Nini and walked back into the kitchen. The girl walked in with two others behind her, saying they could sit in the living room.
“Dude!” Big Red exclaims slapping Ricky’s arm when he turned seeing the two girls with Nini.
"What-“ Ricky freezes in his spot as he makes eye contact with a familiar face. "Gina..." Ricky whispers feeling all the pain he felt two years ago return.
"Oh, you two know each other?" Nini asks looking between Gina and Ricky confused by their reactions.
"Yeah, uh, two years a-ago. I, uh, I gotta go." Ricky stammers and exits the apartment. He walks down the hall towards Nini’s. He would rarely go to Nini’s apartment but he needed to leave his and it was the closest place.
He grabbed the extra key that Nini had hidden above the door and walked in. He managed to make it inside the apartment and shut the door before he broke. He slid down the wall letting the tears fall.
He felt all the pain he felt two years ago return. His heart swelled and broke again. He never thought he'd see Gina again. He planned on never seeing her again. He never wanted to see her but he knew that eventually he would run into the girl just not so soon.
His head was held in his hands and his body shook violently with sobs.
They echoed through the entire apartment so he must have not heard when the door opened. He felt someone kneel next to him and he peeked out through his hands seeing Nini.
“Ricky, hey, what's wrong?” Nini asks nervously.
She hated seeing Ricky cry which is why she always tried to keep him happy. She hated seeing his tear stained face when she first saw him. She didn't like seeing him look so broken even if he was passed out.
The tears that had stained his cheeks hurt Nini to look at.
"I- The night you found me, I had- I had just caught Gina with someone I- I thought was my best friend.” Ricky explained through his tears.
It hurt so think about. It hurt to look at her . He felt empty all over again. He felt everything he did that night two years ago.
"I- I’m sorry. I had no idea." Nini wrapped her arms around Ricky.
The boy rested his head on Nini’s chest trying to calm his breathing. The occasional sobs broke through but other then that, all that could be heard were Nini’s whispers.
"Ricky, it's okay. Everything will be fine just breathe." She whispered running her fingers through Ricky’s hair.
"I’m sorry you have to see me like this." Ricky chuckles after a few minutes of absolute silence. Tears still streaming down his cheeks.
"It's okay, Ricky. Everyone breaks at some point." Nini spoke.
Ricky went to wipe his eyes to get rid of the tears that were streaming down his cheeks but Nini had already beat him to it. Nini careful whipped the stray tears with a small smile on her face. "Are you okay now?" She asks softly.
"Yeah, let's go back and eat. I worked hard to cook that."
"Oh, please. We all know you just opened a premade package and heated it up."
"Hey! I could've been sleeping but no I made you dinner."
————
Ricky walked down the street a few days later. Nini was ranting about something Kourtney did. Ricky wasn't listening well because he trying to remember what he needed from the store.
He needed medicine for Big Red who was back at the apartment with a fever. Walking into the store, he went to the medicine section. Just as he reached the isle, his phone rang with a familiar ringtone that he hasn't heard in two years.
He held himself together pulling out his phone from his back pocket.
Incoming call from E.J
Accept Decline
Ricky stared at the contact name, wondering why he was calling. Hasn't he done enough damage?
Ricky can't even look at his once best friend without wanting to punch him. “Who is it?" Nini asks walking up behind him.
"Oh, uh no one important." Ricky answers declining the call. "Can you go get a bag a chips? Doesn’t matter which as long as it’s not salt and vinegar or anything to do with vinegar.” He asks softly. Nini only nods and walks away just as she does, his phone starts ringing again.
Incoming call from E.J
Accept Decline
"Rick? I- I need to talk to you. Can we meet, please?” E.J’s voice came through sounding panicked. Ricky has only ever heard this tone of voice that night when he was caught with Gina.
"I- no. Call Gina, she can help you. I’m not your friend anymore." Ricky snapped hanging up the phone, shoving it into his back pocket.
Two years ago
Ricky stood there in the door of his bedroom seeing the girl he loved in bed with another. Not just any other person in the world but his best friend. He didn’t want to believe it.
He couldn't believe it. His heart slowly cracked as he saw the sight. Gina panicking to find a pair of pants as Ricky backed away from the door. He needed to get out of there.
"Rick! Ricky, wait!" A hand wrapped around his wrist causing him to stop in his tracks and turned around.
"W-why?" He manages to get out. "And with him? My best friend?"
"Ricky, I'm- you weren't supposed to find out this way." Is all the girl said causing the boy to feel his heart break a little more.
"Really? You aren't going to tell me it was just a mistake? That it means nothing to you? Really, Gina!"
"I- I'm sorry."
"I hate you! You were a waste of my time, I- I- god, I hate you both." Ricky rips his arm from the girls grip as tears streamed down his cheeks.
"Ricky, come on, don't act like this wasn't going to happen at some point. We both knew this wasn't going to work! Just-- just calm down."
"What do you mean 'we'? I believed that we would work. That you- that you actually loved me." Ricky spoke softly as his voice cracks. “But apparently I was wrong.”
"Ricky, I- I did love you. I truly did at some point but- but I just don't anymore." Tears fell from his eyes as he backed away from the girl in front of him.
Not believing the words that left her mouth, he backed up.
Present Time
"Hey, Ricky. Look at me," Nini’s voice broke him out of his daze and he looked around realizing a crowd of people had formed around him.
He was shaking in the floor, his knees brought up to his chest and he held them here. Tears streamed down his face and he wiped them violently.
"Come on, let's get you up." Nini stands up holding a hand out for the boy to grab.
Reaching out a shaking hand, Nini took hold of it and carefully pulled him up. A lady in the crowd handed Nini her bag that she quietly thanked her. "Let's go home."
"I- Did you get the, uh the medicine?” Ricky asks with a shaky voice.
"I got it, Ricky. Don't worry." Ricky nodded softly and they walked back towards the apartment in silence. Nini had her hand locked with Ricky’s.
She held it tightly to let the other know that she was there for him. Entering the apartment, she let go and walked into the kitchen to get a cold bottle of water from the fridge for Ricky. Said boy had walked into his room and sat at the head of his bed.
He didn't understand what was happening lately. Everything had been fine, more than fine for the last two years since he met Nini.
There would be times where he would break down and cry remembering that night but never in public. It never happened out in public or in front of people. After a few minutes, the door opened and Nini walked in handing the bottle of water to him.
"Ricky, you have to tell me what's going on. I need you to tell me what happened the night I found you. I know- I know you probably don't want to but I need to know so I can help you. I need to know how I can help." Nini whispers.
"I- I knew Gina. We- we dated for almost three years but she cheated on me with my best friend, EJ. The night- the night that you found me, I had caught them. I- it hurt so bad, it still does sometimes and I- I don't know why. I- I hate that it still hurts so much. I hate that she still has this hold on me." Ricky explains and tears form in his eyes once more.
Nini sat in front of him and held his hands in hers. "I- I don't want her to still affect me like this. I- I want to move on but I'm scared that it'll happen again. I'm scared that I'd fall too fast and everything falls apart. I don't want to be scared anymore."
"It's normal to be scared. It's okay to be scared, Ricky. I'm here to help with that. I'm here for you. Let me show you that there's no need to be scared of falling in love again." Nini whispers softly holding onto Ricky’s hands and pressing them against her chest. "Let me help you love again."
"Okay.” Ricky smiles softly at Nini.
