Brother+Body Cams=PO

Couple years ago, I went through something that I hope no one will ever have to face or go through with anyone. My brother was a victim of police brutality at the age of 24 because of discrimination. At the time I was too young to understand what was really going with my family. All that my family members told me at the time was that my brother got hurt in a car accident and went through severe pain. Since I was young and naive, I had nothing but believe all of the things that they were saying to me. However, as I got older I began to realize what really happened.

You could say that my brother became a bad seed overtime. He started hanging out with the wrong crowd and constantly got in problems. He just thought that he could of followed what his friends did which led to the police department around my house at the time, being familiar with his face and the people he hung out with. This also caused the scenario with my brother and police officers.

What really happened to my brother became evident as I got older. It all started when my brother was on his way to pick up my grandmother from the hospital one day. On his way, he founded that a police van was following him. So he decided to make a stop and go to the store. As he was coming out of the store and entering his car, the police van hit him from the back. As the van hit him; they came to a stop, got out the van and began beating my brother. My brother had severe damages to his body. After this incident happened, I realized that I wanted to be involved with the criminal justice system.

As time progressed, all of the police brutality stories started stirring up with in the media. It was like every week a new story was being formulated from the brutality to minorities to the injustice of African Americans. Stories like Mike Brown and Trayvon Martin really hit home for me because my brother could have been in that predicament. As I got into college, I started feeling like police officers should wear body cameras at all times. They should be able to show their team and captain all that goes down when they are exposed to civilians. This would come in handy especially for cases like I stated earlier and my brother to document the real things that have happened. I feel like this would allow the public to have a better view on the things that happen between society and the department. Although, some may argue that it is too expensive for every cop to have a body camera and they will cause problems if they fall. But, it will allow the community to have a better image on police officers and how they do their job.

High School V.S. College

The transition from high school to college is different. I feel exactly how you feel when looking at it, and the little things like the cell phone use or even coming in to class a couple of minutes late. I do like college more than high school though, i think that i can be more free to do what i want.

I completely agree with you. The difference between high school and college are endless. Some kids do not realize that you are practically an adult when you come into college. You are living on your own along with roommates. You have to do things on your own. For example, cooking, cleaning, laundry and making your own schedule. You do not have your mother or guidance counselor that can cook for you or even help you with your schedule planning. However, the experience is rewarding. You get to build relationships with people from all over. You are open to ideas and beliefs because of the level of diversity. And most importantly, you get to build your own foundation as an adult.

I like this blog for many reasons. You display a form of leadership because it seems as if you are being a role model for the kids. You are teaching them things in ways that they probably do not understand or get because of their age. You are showing them ways to access certain information. For example, you're teaching them how to play certain keys on the piano which is allowing them to focus and concentrate on specific things. Another example, where you talk about them playing NBA 2K with you is allowing them to work together and build off of one another. You are a role model to these kids which is very rewarding.

Society

Now a days it’s so hard to find someone that puts someone else before themselves. I can honestly say I’ve met 2 people that are still in my life today that would go out of their way to help me even if it put them in a poor position. And I consider myself blessed to have 1 let alone 2 of these people here for me. The reason so many people are unsatisfied with their own lives today is because everyone is so focused on themselves. When I go out of my way for these 2 people it gives me a sense of happiness that I can’t get any other way even doing something twice as good for myself. If you could go out of your way once in a while and then possibly make a habit of it to help others that you don’t necessarily have to the world as we know it would be a better place. It all starts with you though, each individual must play his or her part to fix the society we live in today to make for a better tomorrow. You could start with small things like just working with individuals if u see they could use your help and work up to helping you’re community and maybe even larger on after that but with people doing things like this it helps in other aspects of society as well. People are more willing to trust someone if they go out of their way in ways like this their also more likely to join if they see their not the first one. People are always looking to follow the right thing but no one is willing to leap out and do the right thing first and lead. If you hold any type of leadership role over anyone these are the things that need to be shared to lead by example. To many officials say one thing then do the other and that also needs to come to a stop but again it all starts with you. All ages races and gender can lead in fact we need that if we don’t have everyone contributed to the cause it can never fully be a success and in that case we will never reach our full potential as a society. And even if you don’t care maybe your kids will and do you want them growing up in a hard unforgiving place or a place rather where they can be welcomed and helped rather than out on their own. It’s all up to you.

I completely agree with you. This blog is something that I can relate to in so many different ways. Some people just have to come to terms that there are people out there that will not go that extra length. Some people do not believe in being trustworthy or being a shoulder to lean on when being down. People sometimes do not see the good that is being done because they are so focused on seeing within the moment. Not mention, some may feel a certain way and start acting funny if something is not to their liking. The moral of the story is just do to others what others would do for you. However, at the end of the day do not forget who you are along the way.

I admire the hard work that athletes go through. Some people do not realize how hard it is to play a sport. There is a lot that goes into playing with a team and trying to balance different personalities. I commend you and your team for almost being undefeated and winning a championship. However, I go back to saying that it is hard trying to balance a sport with your life. You mentioned about your wrist being injured, that was a real life issue that affected your performance for the game. Along with your team members having emotions during the game. Those are real life situations that some people do not understand when playing a sport.

Music, WHY?

Music in a way benefits the world in my opinion. At one point it can be a way of escape for most and another way to express creativity. For me, music is absolutely everything. My stress levels lower as soon as I put on my headphones or connect to my speaker. From hiphop and r&b to rock, I usually enjoy all types of music. I am the type of person to use music as an escape. Social anxieties such as school, relationships, family, and my background become just a little too much at times. When listening to music, it becomes easier to handle. Music isn’t called a stress releaser for nothing.This is actually a proven fact by psychologists. Music is in fact linked to our emotions.

Music can also connect and bring people together. In a situation where two or more people are interested in the same type of music, it can lead to conversation and eventually a long lasting friendship. It can create a bond like no other. I have personally met many of my friends through mutual liking of certain artists such as Nas, Adele, Chris Brown, and my personal favorite Drake. It is the most amazing feeling ever when you can vibe with a ton of friends to music that you all enjoy. From attending concerts, discovering new artists and genres, to going to parties, music does in fact create friendships for a last time.

Also, it doesn’t seem like it but there are many occupations in the field of music. From producers, composers, to musical therapists, music is most definitely beneficial. Producers and composers today have created some of the most memorable sounds of our time. Musical therapists in turn help the physical and mental health of their clientele. Some believe that music is harmful to ones knowledge but examples such as this prove why music is beneficial to the population.

Furthermore, genres are everything. Some people are open to a number of genres like myself or they generally stick to about one or two. My favorite genres include hiphop, r&b, pop, and my personal favorite, chutney. Chutney music is a form indigenous to the southern Caribbean, popular in Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, and Suriname. Since I was born in Guyana, chutney music is a regular thing to hear in my household. It defines some of who I am in terms of personality and where my family and I come from.

Music has been around for generations and I cannot imagine a world without it.

Holidays

This is my favorite time of year. Fall brings out the inner child in me. And it does not help with my nieces and nephews. Ever since I could remember, I loved this time because of all the holidays, weather changes and food. The beginning of Fall gets me all happy inside because of my family. I just love being around all of my family because they come from all over to spend the holidays together with one another.

With October being Halloween month, puts me in the mind set to dress up and act like a kid with my friends. This Halloween was a bit bittersweet because of my family. Usually, I would have two different celebrations going on. First, I would dress up with my nieces and nephews and take them treat or tricking. I would spend couple hours with them and bring them back home, count how much candy everyone got and divide the amount amongst everyone. Then, I would change into another costume and go out with my friends. Usually, one of my friends have a Halloween party; and then we would just attend.

With November being Thanksgiving month, puts my mind at ease while I'm in school now. This time is really big in my family because both sides of my family come together. Some of my family from Guyana and Canada come up to celebrate with us. Everything around this holiday is exciting. Now that I am older, I am more active in the cooking portion of the preparations of the meal aspects. Being away from home, allows me to appreciate when my parents cook for my siblings and I. That is one of the things I miss the most about being in college; just being in the atmosphere with good food and great people.

With December being Christmas month, puts me in a happy mood. Just being able to see the joy on others face is my greatest gift of all. I rather give presents than accept them because I love to make others happy. You can say I prefer to make those around me feel better than my overall self. Not to mention, the food again. I just love being around my family. I am a very family orientated person. I put my family first in everything that I do. I really love my family because of all the life lessons they have taught me.

Sneakers

This week I have decided to write about the love I have for shoes. Sneakers, in particular. Ever since I could remember I have been wearing sneakers rather than shoes. This is because of my older brother. My mother and I would constantly go back and forth when we go shopping just because of my love for sneakers. As a child, she would want me to get flats and ballerina shoes. She could never understand why I always wanted sneakers. But, my brother understood why. I wanted to be just like him and it did not help that overtime he would find himself buying us matching sneakers.

Sneakers allow me to express myself. It may sound weird but it is true. My sneakers is a representation of the person I am. It shows how organized I am as a person because I keep them in good shape. It also shows how detailed of a person I am because I take in account of the process it takes to find the right shoe. I call myself a female sneakerista. I have all kinds of sneakers; that range from color, brand and texture. Back in the day, if a girl was caught wearing sneakers, they would be considered a tomboy or on the verge of being a lesbian. In this generation, sneakers are a trend. You will find a lot of women wearing all types of sneakers for different occasions. For example, going to the gym or going out with friends.

I do not know what is it about sneakers that I love so much. Sometimes I think about the different aspects that goes into buying a sneaker. You have to first think of what you already have so you do not buy a duplicate of what you have already. Then, you have to think about the color scheme that you are trying to go for. Next, you have to think about what you have in your closet to match the sneaker and if not, what you are going to buy to match. Finally, the cost of the sneaker; what is the budget and if it is worth it.

As I got older, my parents got used to fact of me having a bunch of sneakers. My dad supports my addiction of sneakers because it makes me happy knowing I have a lot of sneakers. My mother on the other hand, hates it because she thinks I should be more girly.

There is a lot of things to do with this project. First, I wasn’t sure what your main message was pertaining to these recreational drugs. Is your main target Marijuana? Or is it the other drugs that you mentioned? I believe that this project will allow us (as the class) find out new information that we never knew before about the different types of recreational drugs. I would like to find out the long term and short term goals of these drugs. I would also like to find out what made you come to this topic for your project and why is this important to you.

My Project

I am really concerned about Common Core in New York State. As someone who just graduated from a NYS public school I have seen some of the changes that we’ve gone through and it’s getting ridiculous especially in the math category. I have decided to research the specific topic of math in common core in NYS further and this is what I have so far. First off I looked at the elementary school level of math. It turns out that it takes a lot of time out of the day to learn the new ways of math. I would like to show this on my map as 2 clocks, one showing a short amount of time (this one being crossed out) and the other a longer amount of time and this one being fine. I’m not sure what creative ideas I have for the map as a whole though. I was thinking of maybe drawing a giant clock and going clockwise with the pictures starting at the top and ending back there. One interesting fact that I found is that even adults can have trouble learning the new way they teach math now. I have even looked at some of the problems and I don’t quite understand them even though I’m a math education major. One way that I wish to illustrate that is to show an adult and a child together looking at a problem in confusion. One other thing I would like to show is that kids are taught a different way until these past few years and are starting to be told what they’ve learned as wrong. I feel like this might have a negative impact on children wanting to learn new things. They not be as motivated as much. I really don’t know how to show this without it being a picture that would take up my whole poster. 

I could really use help on ideas of what could make the map look interesting if anyone had any ideas. I think the clock idea is nice, but it won’t immediately express what I’ve learned. So far in brief detail this is what I’ve learned with (pictures). 1. Good Idea (Light Bulb) 2. Could Be Done Better (Don’t have a picture Yet ) 3.Takes up Time (Clocks) 3.Really Complicated and Hard to Learn (Complicated Math Problem) 4. Can’t Learn Other Subjects (Beaker and Globe Crossed Out) 5. Teachers are Blamed (Still need a Picture) 6. Too many tests (Still need a picture). This is all I have for now and I still need to do more research. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them and if you do look at mine I will take the time to look at your sand give my feedback. I won’t be back on until Monday though if you write back.

Your topic is very educating and intriguing. In high school I worked alongside the principal; with that being said, we had meetings pertaining to the Common Core. I am for and against this program. It is produced in a positive way for children starting in elementary school because they would be more advanced by the time they reach to high school. However, it can be negative by causing kids to drop out because of the work load or the intensity of the classwork. As far as ideas for your project, it would be cool if you create a giant calculator, have each number that would be on a calculator; pop up and have the images you pick for your web map under each number. That would demonstrate the math aspect of your project.

My project will be based on the effects of food and how food changed over the years. In other words, food today helps make people bigger due to whats in the food. For example, chickens are filled with drugs being pumped into it yearly. Another example of why people aren’t as healthy as they can be is due to processed food. Processed food contains loss of nutrients, bad absorption, salt, lack of real taste, fats (saturated) and the quality isn’t that great. Processed foods will try and display their positive side which actually gives the customer a false idea(100) of what processed foods actually bring. Over a 100 years food nutrients has changed. Our grandparents are actually healthier than we might think. The studies in colorado states that the nutrient density has decreased tremendously of 40-60% over the past 100 years. Recent study also showed that only 11% of americans eat 2 fruits and 3 vegtables everyday. They claim that this unhealthy combination of nutrient poor foods of a open door for disease especially if its used as a lifetime deal. The main question that people need to ask themselves is “this food given/produced by God or (200)is it jus processed by man?” This question is a way of understanding how food has changed over the years. In the past, people killed an animal, cleaned it and then cooked it until it became edible. In today’s food world, our food is processed through test and chemicals. In my project web, I’d have a before and after affect from the difference food had on us today opposed to the food our grandparents ate. This topic can bring up a debate because even back then there were alot of unhealthy people but processed food tends to be everything we (300)eat. We are taught that the food we eat will gives us nutrients everyday and will help us sustain a good living when in reality it’s not true. Everything in today’s society is processed with food coloring, steroids etc. Our grandparents often had gardens and growing things form the ground up with provides healthy nutrients. The food we have now is actually slowly killing us individuals. If we ate food from the ground, the world would be healthier because thats how the food is given to us. It was never processed to being with. Everything we eat and digest now is man made to get money from us who eat it (customers). This can even go deeper than the topic im discussing. For example, people around the world are sick and not saved because of the man made pills thats given. If the people knew that something small as ginger or macaroot was used in people’s diet; they will live longer lives. Everything from the root/ground is good for the body but not anything processsed.

I’m excited to see what you come up with because this topic is very interesting. I remember on Peer Review day, I say your Web Map Outline and I was impressed by the pictures you used. I got the message right away and figured out what you were talking about. When you mentioned that our grandparents were healthier than us really got me thinking about how I want to grow old. They say that once you get older you become weaker, but that isn’t always true if you take care of yourself at a young age. I can’t wait to see you present your project.

October 18, 2014 was a life changing moment in my life. It is a day that I can and will never forget throughout my life. It was Saturday afternoon and I was getting ready to go out with my friends. As I headed out the shower, and came back to my room; I noticed that I had a lot of missed calls from my family back home. I had text messages from my mom, FaceTime missed calls from my grandma and aunt. I just thought that all of my family was together and wanted to see how I was doing in school.

After I got dressed, I called my aunt back to see what was wrong. The first thing she said, “I need you to sit down Mariah.” I started to get scared because it sounded serious since she was asking me if I was sitting down. She began by saying “After I tell what I am about to say, I need you to promise me that you will not allow this to affect your performance in school.” I found myself getting mad because I felt as if she was beating around the bush. That is when she finally spoke and said “Grandpa is dead.” At that exact moment, I did not know how to react. I was lost for words and I had no feeling in my body. I ended up dropping the phone on the floor and began crying. I felt as if a part of me was gone.

Everything became frozen to me at the time because I could not grasp the fact that my grandfather was gone forever. He was more than just my grandfather. He was my second father and my best friend. He knew me better than my own parents. We had a bond like no other because I confided and trusted him with everything. He was a very strong man. Not because of his size but because of his ability to persevere and strive for the best in life. He was a man of many things. He taught his family all about giving back and loving one another. His motive was to always be a unit and be there for one another because we’re all that we have. Yes, we’ve all had ups and downs but he made sure that love would be the reason to forget everything. He fulfilled every obligation he undertook. His word was his bond, which made him trustworthy. His words and life lessons will forever be imprinted in my life.

Fashion & Culture

In today society, fashion is being overpowered by the things that have been going on in the world. The idea of expressing oneself has now been shadowed by the thoughts of how society view certain fashion trends. Before, fashion was known as a fashion statement or trend. Nowadays, fashion is being speculated and watched in a bird eye’s view. It is becoming more of a controversial dilemma regarding different cultures and customs. For example, fashion and discrimination.

Who would have thought that fashion would somehow become a problem in today’s society. Companies and fashion designers are being looked at extra careful due to discrimination tactics lately. For example, people who wear head wraps as a fashion statement. In the Indian and Middle Eastern cultures, head wraps are known as hijabs. Traditionally, wearing a hijab is worn my Muslim women covering the head and the chest. On the other hand, it is a concept of privacy which is expressed through the clothing that is worn within that culture. According to National Geographic, allowing those who are not Islamic should not be allowed to follow this fashion trend because it is a very controversial fashion statement for those who are not of Indian and Middle Eastern decent. Some also believe that wearing this type of head piece is disrespectful towards the culture because some individuals do not know the religion and customs within this culture. It is also a disgrace for those who do not believe in that religion.

Another example, that simple African fabric that is worn at weddings and ceremonial events has been part of a fashion trend. Everywhere you look and see, there is someone wearing a dashiki. Whether it is worn as a dress, shirt with shorts or just a long shirt; this piece of clothing has been taken advantage of. Some believe that there is nothing wrong with this item due to people in Africa who have been wearing this for centuries. According to ELLE Magazine August 2015 Edition, they find that there is nothing wrong wearing this piece of clothing. However, those who read the ELLE Magazine Edition seemed to think otherwise. Some individuals felt as if this is a sign of mocking the culture because it was said that this is the new it item within the French culture. Although, this is a bold fashion trend; it loses its credibility and history which originated from Africa and not France.

The moral of this blog was to just bring insight to fashion controversy.

Who Am I?

My life, in my eyes, is something i like to look at as accomplishments and happiness. I try to get the most that i want out of life as i can, while enjoying myself and working hard. Some people to me, just take life to seriously most of the time. I try not to look at it that way. I feel as if since we really only get one chance at this life stuff, we should just live it to the fullest the best way we can. Things about me outside of all of the classes, and things that i feel are required for me to do throughout life to be successful, is i just like to chill out. That may seem like something so simple, but for me, that feels like everything. I feel as if i am always on the go, and that i don’t have time for a lot of the things that i want to do. So when i do finally get free time to myself, i just hangout with the bros. Another thing about me is that i don’t tell people much about me. i rather just wait for them to get to know me through just finding out things on their own. If people really cared enough about me, they would pay attention to the things i do and how i act. I also like learning something new everyday, so that is another reason as to why I keep things hiding. My life is always on the move, and it is also very exciting. I love my life, and if i had to add one thing about myself, it would be to be even more ambitious.

I agree with everything that you mentioned in your blog. Especially in this generation, I believe that it is a must to live our lives the way we want to. Due to problems going on around the world, we should leave our marks for those to know what we did and if we changed anything. As far as being more ambitious, I believe that over time you will become more ambitious. We are only young adults, we have much more to live for and do before our final days are up. I can see this in your background that you play football, that alone has a lot of ambitious perks attached. For example, you making it in the league one day.

What you need to know about me.

Getting screamed at used to be a part of my daily routine. This is only because my favorite thing to do in my free time is to play video games and often I pay online.  I have an XBOX 360 and I like to play almost any kind of sports game and right now I am hooked on Madden 16 and especially its ultimate team mode. I used to play games like Call of Duty and Halo been I have seen to grow out of them in the past few years. Although I occasionally revisit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 since it’s my favorite one. When I was younger I used to play Spyro The Dragon or Crash Bandicoot with my brother. I FREAKING LOVE VIDEO GAMES.

More about me. Well, I’m a sophomore who is a math education major, I also work a part time job about 25 hours a week on top of going to school full time. I also live about 25 minutes from campus which makes paying for gas money that much more fun! Trying to balance this can be difficult but, when I do have free time there are many different things I like to do. I’ve already stated my obsession over video games although I tend to do other things. My brother and I love to play basketball in our driveway, it’s fun when it’s just the two of us but, I do like to play it with more people as a team sport. I also play football with my friends whenever we can all get together. Although during the school year it rarely occurs.

My father owns a hunting cabin in Cattaraugus County. We go down about once a month even when it’s not hunting season. In fact we went down there last weekend and had a lot of fun relaxing on Labor Day weekend. I join my dad in the late November and early December for white tail season. I’m not the best hunter but, I like to go down and spend time with my dad.

I love to watch football. It’s just that simple. I am a huge Bills fan and I’m glad I just got to watch them beat the crap out of the Indianapolis Colts. I also play fantasy football. I am in like 6 different leagues and I can’t focus on who I actually have and just pray my teams are doing well.

Hunting? I would of never expected reading anything like that. I have so much questions for you. How old were you when you shot your first gun? What types of animals do you and your family hunt for? What was the first animal you caught? What made you like hunting besides your father? I think that it is really cool that you have this talent. Besides football and video games, you have an interesting life. If you think about it, how many kids can really say that their parents own a hunting cabin or that you can go hunting whenever you want? Wanna switch lives?

I often wonder what my meaning in life really is. I wake up, I go to class, I go to work, and then go to sleep. It’s a repeating occurrence and I can’t help but believe there’s more to life than this customary one I am currently living. I can’t quite distinguish whether it’s a higher power governing us to make me feel like I have meaning in my life. My parents raised me to believe God had a will for my life but I couldn’t grasp the reality of praising something I cannot see. Maybe I’m just seeking more contingency?? I live day by day waiting for something to change or give me satisfaction but I don’t feel anything changing at all. It’s like my life is at a stand still and I’m watching everyone go somewhere but myself.

I disagree with you. I believe that you have a value on this earth just like any other human being. You may not see everything through right now because of how you are feeling. But everyone has a purpose. Now I do not know who you are, but I do know that you and everyone else has the power to make their own mark on this earth. Whether it is political or social; you are worth something. cell phones are a problem

I realize in today’s society that cell phones are a problem. Sometimes I wish I knew how to make cell phones because I know the inventor is now a billionaire. I notice that most individuals use the phone as a prop or a  way to hide who they truly are. For example, a lot of girls on campus use the phone so when you try to look them in the eyes as you pass them; they have something else to look at. I also know that people look at their phones as if its a life line to their (100)success. I understand that to a certain extent because of the false dreams people give out on social media etc. My parents always tell me to this day that if cell phones wasn’t a problem; the world would be a better place. They tell me this because the world doesn’t have to take place in our phones. The world has alot to offer when you truly pay attention. Its a beautiful thing but sadly most of us miss out on so much because we feel as if were important on social media or elsewhere. I feel as if everyone is faking each (200)other out with self pnones also. I’m really talking about phone apps such as twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat etc. Phones cause these problems because their hand held and you can be on it 24/7. Therefore, you don’t have to go on a laptop or computer when you get home or when you find a comfortable space to relax. Social media allows people to feel as if their a celebrity or some higher power when in reality their not. I call this the “two-faced system” for us young adults/teenagers. For example, a person in reality can have bad ache(300) but on the internet they can look like a model with filters. Have anybody thought that maybe even dating would be easier without cell phones? I advise people to think about it because if a individual is distracted on their phones or text messages daily; then how can they possibly be loyal? I realize that most people can’t live without cell phones and its sad. Phones are distractions if not being used the right way such as calling or interacting over the phone. People can miss the love of their life (future wifes, husbands, etc) just by looking down at a phone that doesn’t give you anything but a bill monthly.  Cell phones really are a problem.

I was just having a debate over cell phones in my speech class. I agree with you completely due to things that goes on while using cell phones. If I see someone that I do not like or want to say hi too, I put my head down and go on my phone. However, this generation tends to lean on electronic devices as an escape for the real world. This life that we all have the opportunity to be a part of, has so much to offer. Traveling to different countries, tasting new cuisines, exploring new ideas are all things that are not paid attention to because we gravitate to a cell phone.
