bro I started thinking too much about selkies from folklore and I started thinking about how in the stories, they hide their skins, an essential part of themselves without which they can not be fully themselves, away for their protection. But then the skin is always found by someone and kept from the selkie, forcing them into the roles of Woman and Wife and Mother as if those roles are all the selkie is or could be. And the selkie lives with these roles, even finding joy in them, but always longing to be reunited with their skin and become fully themselves again, and be with others like themselves again. And indeed they do that the first chance they get

idk, as an afab nonbinary person, I just started seeing a lot of parallels and the selkie's longing started reading a lot like dysphoria and I'm sure you can can read other queer narratives into it and now I'm having feelings

Hey fam, guess who started thinking about selkies in relation to being neurodivergent too. Especially the part where you always feel Other, that you don't belong among normal humans. You have to try your best to act as human as the people around you, but you're not really human as much as you look like one, and it's exhausting. You're craving belonging, to go somewhere that feels like home, where you can be your natural self. You can sit on that shore as long as you like, wade into those waters when no one else is around, but eventually you have to return to town and put your human face back on

I was born to swim in glacial lakes and icemelt streams. Also I float.
