I think I just came up with a good tool for avoiding exposition dumps. When you’re conveying worldbuilding information, ask yourself: how much reason does the reader have to care about this information in the current context of the story?
reblog to send your mutuals a hug. maybe just the thought is enough to cheer them up 🥺
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is peak gaming and I will fight anyone who says otherwise in the Denny’s parking lot. I would lose the fight because I’m a pacifist and wouldn’t want to actually hurt someone else, but I have to stand with my convictions.
what’s with bots and scammers on tumblr targeting aspiring writers specifically like who looked at a bunch of sleep deprived emotionally unstable people with no money and went yes these are the ideal victims for financial schemes
“nobody is making you do this” i am driven by unnatural forces you will never even begin to comprehend
The story consumes me.
The visions plague me.
Happy Independent Bookstore Day! Hope everyone is taking the opportunity to celebrate as they are able; it’s a great excuse to hit up some local stores and grab some new books to read!
My fantasy novel, Hopefinder, is currently available for preorder through my own local bookstore, Curious Iguana, at a discount! Check it out here:

There was something interesting I noted while watching Avatar: The Last Airbender last night. One method the show uses to create character depth is establishing a trait for someone, and then also putting that character in situations where it’s superseded by other traits. For example, Aang is a character who is all about creating peace and harmony, but there are a lot of moments where he gets genuinely angry and sometimes even violent if someone hurts his loved ones. Definitely planning to try using this tool in my own writing at some point!
One of my friends in my writing group recently published his debut novel! It’s so awesome seeing the results of all the hard work he’s been putting into it for so long. We both started on our debut titles around the same time, and it’s been really cool getting to walk this path together!
Check out Farm Windows - <strong>Windows are strange things. These see through walls, conduits, passageways connected or obscured. Occasiona
I’ve never been to Seattle, but evidently there’s an independent bookstore there that has my fantasy novel up for preorder on their website! It looks like a super cool place too - their whole thing is providing a space for people to be in community with one another. I think having spaces oriented towards nurturing communities is really important, especially with so many of them disappearing in recent years. Be sure to check them out if you’re in that area - hopefully I’ll be able to visit someday myself!

Things I can only say on Tumblr: go ahead and pirate my book, but please leave a review somewhere if you liked it.
(I am NOT saying you should just pirate other indie authors' work. I prefer you respect other authors' opinion on the matter)
I have a day job and more books in the pipeline, so I'm not dependent on this one for a salary, and the number one enemy of a self-publishing author is discoverability. There are so many books out there that it's hard to find your readers. The amount of money you are costing me by pirating is well worth the review you leave. Goodreads, Storygraph, Hebban, Fable - just not Amazon please as it will remove reviews from accounts that didn't buy the book there.
(also let's face it most people who pirate were never going to be a paying customer so have I even lost anything?)
If you do want to buy it, the DRM-free e-book (and a free short story; both also as .pdf) can be found here: https://daphnevermeer.gumroad.com/ It's no-romance urban fantasy set in Belgium featuring two young guys who are stubbornly continuing to fight fairies because no help is coming.
Currently my book is still in the preorder stage of things so I don’t think it’s available to be pirated currently. But like I 100% agree with this take. Both in the practical sense where it’s very valuable for indie authors to have people who spread the word about their work, and also in the sense where for me personally one of my main goals as a writer is just to be able to share my work with the world and be in community with others around it.
I made a playlist for Hopefinder! Some notes on the songs I chose for it:
You Can’t Kill Us - This song captures a lot of Meric’s resiliency in the face of what they’re struggling with. In particular the first verse of the song goes absolutely raw, both in general and in terms of how it relates to the story.
Sunrise - Trigger warning on this one for lyrics alluding to self-harm, suicidal ideation, and grief. That said, this song similarly conveys some of the vibes of Meric’s healing journey. The quote at the end of the song has the feel of what I want the group of Hopefinders as a whole to feel like.
The Stolen Child - It feels like this could be the song playing during the climax of the novel. I love the way it slowly builds up over time, and the amount of emotions in the string instruments. No lyrics here, just vibes.
romantic relationships blah blah blah okay but what about risking everything for your sibling. what about the unwavering love and care that can only come from a parent to a child. what about someone who just wants their best friend back. ever thought of that.
