the torrent duck is a unique duck species endemic to the andes of south america. they hold their territories on fast-moving mountain rivers, typically at high elevations above 1,500 metres (4,900 ft). while they typically only fly short distances, they are skilled swimmers and divers, even in the rush of fast-moving water. male torrent ducks have a black and white head and neck and bright red bill; females are smaller and have rusty orange underparts as opposed to white. their calls are similar; males’ whistles are shrill, while females’ whistles are throatier. these ducks primarily feed by diving and dabbling for aquatic invertebrates, occasionally diversifying their diet with crustaceans and fish. introduced trout who have become invasive in the ducks’ range have led to a population decline due to competition for food resources; they are also threatened by pollution, habitat degradation, and damming of mountain rivers.

Current WIP: Birds of the Midwest (aka Teeny Tiny Birds)
Each bird is painted in a 1x1" square, with the exception of the Great Blue Heron. These birds are all fairly common around my city at various times through the year.
This project has been so much fun, and great practice for control and details at a small scale. There's no real system for which bird I paint next, apart from considerations for color. Otherwise it's all vibes based.
