âHow was your first day?â Daniel asked his son, as the two of them walked home from the junior school. It was only a ten minute walk from their new house in Bristol; the two of them had moved there after Danâs wife, Julia had passed away, last year.  It had been a few weeks since their move down south from Newcastle. It was somewhat different in the south, the people were all together less friendly than they were up north, and the city itself was⊠not great, but it was something. There was a park around the corner from the small two bedroom house they rented from the council, and a few shops for food, and other things
âIt was OKâ Jamie replied, looking down at the ground, it was something he had taken to doing in the past year. Some days were better than others, and it was expected that he would be quiet after a first day at  a new school
âYeah, schoolâs OKâ Dan agreed with his son, as they reached their house âTell you what, we can watch a movie tonight if you get your homework done before dinnerâ he offered
âNo homework, itâs only the first dayâ Jamie replied
âOh, than tell me about your first day, and weâll watch a movie after dinnerâ he said
âIt was⊠alright. All the kids went to the same school together before though, and they speak differentlyâ Jamie began, the two of them sat on the stools in the kitchen as Dan waited for the kettle to boil. âLike, they donât understand any of the âGeordieâ words I say, and none of them seem to recognise the existence of the letter âtââ he explained to his dad, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl as it would still be awhile before dinner, anyhow.
âHmm, and the teachers?â he asked, pouring his cup of tea, allowing a few seconds before adding a little sugar and a dash of milk.
âTeachers are teachersâ Jamie replied, as if though that was obvious.

The next few days past by fairly quickly, even if nothing much had happened during them, although Jamie had thankfully made a few friends at the school and Dan had started his new job at the âHeaven-Teaâ cafĂ©. It wasnât his first choice of job, but they needed the income, and he really needed something to do with his spare time whilst Jamie was at school. After a half an hourâs training session on how to operate the various coffee machineâs he was left on his own to serve the few customers who had wandered in, all of them dripping wet from the heavy rain coming down outside.
Dan filled each of their orders, thanking a higher power that no one ordered anything more complicated than a flavoured latte. For half seven in the morning though, things seemed fairly quiet, though he expected that things would pick up around half eight once Jamie left for school. At the moment he was currently sat at one of the tables with a bottle of water going over the days homework, having said that he didnât have any the night before.
âHowâd do you spell hierarchy?â Jamie called over
âUmmâŠâ Dan began, as a new customer walked through the door, making Dan forget what he was saying
âHierarchy, dad how do you spell itâ Jamie asked again.
âH-i-e-râŠâ he began, thinking through each letter, because really it was a terrible word to have to spell
âItâs h-i-e-r-a-r-c-h-yâ the gentleman said, saving Dan from embarrassing himself any further. âAnd Jamie, is that todayâs homework?â the man asked
âYes, sir, but at least itâs getting done before classâ Jamie replied âDad, this is my history teacher and tutor, Mr Skrtel, sir this is my dad, who really needs to put his eyes back in their socketsâ Jamie said, introducing the two of them, clearly embarrassed.
âThanks for that, I honestly have no idea how to spell hierarchyâ he said, shaking hands with his sonâs history teacher.
âWant to know a secretâ the other replied, bringing the two of them closer as he did so âNeither do I. That was just me guessingâ he said, before stepping back, with one of the cutest smiles Dan had seen across his face. âAnd you may call me Martinâ
âVery well, Martin, my name is Dan by the wayâ he replied, taking his place back behind the counter âwhat can I get for you?â
âA bottle of diet coke, a sausage and egg sandwich to take away, and an espresso to drink inâ he asked, taking the money from his wallet
âAn espresso, reallyâ Dan asked as he processed the order, and started the coffee machine whilst the till loaded.
âYouâre not a teacher, trust me itâs neededâ Martin explained, Jamie nodded in agreement
âItâs only been a week of term, how bad can it be?â Dan asked, placing the items on the tray
âYou want to tell him, or shall I?â Martin asked, looking around at Jamie who had since finished his homework
âTell me what, what happened?â Dan asked, getting slightly concerned now as Martin handed him the ÂŁ10 note, and he gave the three pound fifty change back
âOh nothing, just that the senior year group decided it would be a good idea to start a new game called âdrillââ Martin started to explain, slowly sipping his espresso. âThe idea being that whenever they have a class where thereâs any risk of fire, so science or cookery, are particular risks, they see how far they can go before setting the fire alarm off. We had four in three daysâ he explained, exasperated âFive students have been suspended, and as you said itâs only been a weekâ
âWhoaâŠâ Dan said at a loss for words, he knew the school wasnât brilliant, but he also didnât expect anything like that either
âNeedless to say, the Headmistress has already made an announcement, and anyone involved will be severely punished, etc. etc.â Martin said, drinking the last of his coffee in one go
âTheyâll probably just find another way to entertain themselves thoughâ Jamie added, as he packed his books back into his bag
âTrueâ Martin agreed with him âLetâs just hope though, that whatever it is, itâs saferâ
âAgreedâ Dan said âYou two are going to be late if you hang around any longerâ
âYou go ahead, Jamieâ Martin said âIâm sure you donât want to be seen walking to school with your teacherâ
âAlright, cheers! See you later, dadâ Jamie said, with a small wave as he walked out of the door
âArenât you worried about being late?â Dan asked, taking the small cup over to the sink
âDonât worry, thereâs another forty minutes before registration. Iâm sure Jamie will be OK with getting a little extra time with his friends anyhowâ Martin said, choosing to lean against the counter
âWhat about staff meetings, surely you need to get to one?â
âOh, those, no they only take place on Thursdays, so really Iâm goodâ Martin answered, showing off that smile again.
âWell, in that case how about another coffee?â Dan offered âIt definitely sounds as though you could use itâ
âBetween our schoolâs students and the Uni students partying in the street until three this morning, I couldnât agree with you moreâ

Over the next couple of weeks, Dan found himself coming up with any excuse he could to see Martin again. He would often give him the wrong change, so that Martin would have to come back into the cafĂ© to have it sorted out. It became sort of a routine that Martin would come in at the end of the school day, just when Danâs shift was finishing and Jamie was at a study group or after school club.
âEspresso, double, pleaseâ Martin said, reaching the till
âThat bad, huhâ Dan asked, as he prepared the coffee, and grabbed a muffin from the case âItâs on the houseâ he said, when he noticed the slight confusion on Martinâs face
âI need to have bad days more often, if this is the resultâ
âThe seniors againâ Dan asked. So far theyâd nearly burned the school to the ground, flooded the changing rooms, let loose a group of dogs and spend one day acting as though they were pre-school children
âThey built a barricadeâ Martin explained, taking a sip of his coffee
âWhereâ Dan asked
âThe maths blockâ Martin answered, deciding to tear his muffin in two âHere, have halfâ he offered
âThanksâ he replied, accepting the offer. He could always put the money in the till later if his manager found out, than again the guy gave away so much free stuff it was a wonder the place hadnât gone out of business.
âThey decided it was the most defendable part of the school, and that therefore the best place to hold protests. Theyâre demanding a more lenient dress-code and longer lunches â negotiations are still ongoingâ Martine explained, finishing his coffee
âHoly fuckâ Dan swore âBack in Newcastle, I heard about one school that held a âsing dayââ
Martin looked around the cafĂ© before replying âJust checking there arenât any students from the schoolâ he explained âWhat exactly is a sing-day?â
âThe entire school went a whole day singing instead of speaking. So answering questions and registration in songâ Dan explained.
âHonestly, I prefer it if they did that â even if most of them canât singâ Martin replied, smiling. Dan returned the smile.
The two of them spent the next hour and a half chatting as Dan finished his shift and closed the café up. It was just past six by the time they headed outside, the rain coming down hard as usual in October.
âIâll see you soonâ Martin said, giving Danâs arm a squeeze
âYeah, see you soonâ Dan returned, offering Martin a small smile and squeeze on the arm in turn, before the two of them walked home in opposite directions.

Dan spend the weekend taking Jamie to see a football match over in Cardiff, it had been a bit of a trip over on the trains. The two of them were exhausted come Monday morning when Jamie had to go back to school, and Dan to work, but it had been worth it. Cardiff had managed to beat Reading 3-2 courtesy of a Reading sending off and a penalty in the dying few moments when the scores were still level.
âCanât I just stay home todayâ Jamie asked, as the two of them left the house
âSorry, no. Youâll be fineâ Dan said, locking the door behind them. Â âWe both willâ he added
âYeah, so long as I donât fall asleep in front of Mrs Fergusonâ Jamie said, half seriously âYou swear the woman has no idea whatâs going on, and as soon as you step out of line, she starts yellingâ
âAnd so long as I donât fall asleep and spill tea all over the floorâ Dan added
They walked together until the petrol station by the roundabout âRight, be good and donât fall asleepâ Dan said, looking to make sure the traffic wasnât too bad before Jamie crossed
âSame goes for youâ Jamie said, smiling as he turned to cross the road Dan watching to make sure he got over safely before he headed the other way to work.

By half-three on the Friday, the place was empty, so Dan decided to start clearing up slightly early to save some time later. It had been busier earlier in the day, with three of them struggling to get through a party of tourists that had come in, and so far none of them had been able to work out why anybody would want to visit Bristol on their holidays. At the moment though, it was just him and Jordan in the place, collecting coffee mugs and wiping the tables down.
âIâm going to do it tonightâ Jordan announced, he had spent the last week telling Dan how he was planning on proposing to his long-time boyfriend, Lucas, just as soon as he worked up the courage to do so
âCongrats manâ Dan said, giving him a pat on the back of the shoulder as he walked passed. He had met Lucas once, and could see how good the two of them were together, and it was all together sweet how Jordan referred to him as âsunshineâ. Â They carried on talking as they worked, until they were interrupted by the sound of Danâs phone ringing.
âHelloâ he said, not recognising the number on the screen
âDan, itâs Martinâ came the reply, causing Dan to wander about what was going on âJamieâs fine, but he got into a fight at school today, so youâre going to have to come and see me about itâ Martin explained
âRight, OKâ Dan replied, in shock âUmm⊠well Jamie has a sleep-over tonight, I should probably tell him to stay home now, but I want to hear what happened firstâ he said
âOK, well Iâll be in my class room, just sign in at reception first and someone will show you where it isâ Martin told him
âRight, Iâll be there as soon as I canâ Dan said, hanging up the phone
âEverything OKâ Jordan asked, as Dan placed the phone back in his pocket
âJamie got into a fight at school today, so now I have to go and have a talk with his tutorâ he explained
âThe bold guy, with all the tattoos?â asked Jordan
âYeahâ Dan replied, somewhat fondly
âI donât know, the guy sort of scares me, doesnât he ever smileâ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
âAll the time, and itâs adorableâ Dan said, quickly covering his mouth, slightly embarrassed by what he had just said.
âI may be sickâ Jordan said, smiling all the same
âSays the guy who came in here gushing over his boyfriend this morning âoh Lucas is so perfectâ, âyouâll never guess what Lucas got me for our anniversaryâŠâ Dan began, counting off on his hand as he did so
âAlright, point taken. You go over to the school, sleeping beauty in the back and I will manage hereâ Jordan offered, giving Dan leave to grab his things from his tiny locker in the backroom and head over to the school.
****
âPlease, have a seatâ Martin said, standing up from his desk as Daniel walked into the room. The class room was large enough to hold about thirty students, with historical posters covering the walls and a notice board at the back of the room. The old TV in the corner was showing one of the previous seasonâs Liverpool matches, though it was hard to tell, because the quality of the picture was so poor, and the sound was turned off. Instead Martin was using the radio on his phone for background noise, at the moment the station was playing a few of Elvisâ classics. Dan chose a seat at the front of the room, whilst Martin lent against his desk. âIâd offer you a drink, but the kettle is back in the officeâ
âThatâs OKâ Dan said âJust please, tell me what happenedâ he asked
âI came back in here at the end of lunch to find that Jamie, and Ryan â whose parents I will be speaking to tomorrow â trying to tackle one another to the groundâ Martin explained, arms folded across his chest
âDo you know what the fight was about?â Dan asked, getting up from his chair, so that he could lean against the table instead.
âIâm afraid not. Ryanâs not even in this form, technically he shouldnât have been in here, but most of us let them come and go so long as they behave themselvesâ Martin replied with a sigh âWhen I talked with the two of them afterwards, they just said it was over a game, but I donât really believe thatâ he added
âNo, itâs definitely more seriousâ Dan agreed, nodding his head âIâll have a word with Jamie tomorrow when I pick him up. What happens here now?â
âThe two of them have a head of year detention on Thursday, and theyâll have to write an explanation and apology for their behaviourâ Martin answered
âOKâ Dan replied âIs there anything else?â
âJust one thingâ Â Martin replied, taking a step towards Daniel, and pulling the two of them together so there was hardly any space between them. âThisâ he said closing the gap between the two of them and kissing Dan full on the mouth.
They stood there kissing, hot and heavy for a few moments before Dan pulled away struggling for breath âWhoaâ he breathed, forehead resting against Martinâs
âYeah, kind of wanted to do that for a whileâ Martin admitted, a huge smile across his face
âSame hereâ Dan admitted, before kissing Martin again. This time the kiss was slower than before, but just as desperate. Dan eventually managed to move them so that they were stood against Martinâs desk. After a few moments though, Martin turned them around and pressed Dan against the desk until he was sitting on it, as Martin moved to kiss down his neck instead, causing Dan to look up at the tiled ceiling and fluorescent lights
âWe shouldâŠâ Martin began, pulling away much to both of their disappointment
âYeahâ Dan agreed
****
The walk back over to his house felt far too long, even the two of them were practically running by the time they reached the right street. After another minute or so, Dan managed to unlock the front door, having nearly dropped his keys a couple of times in the process.
âSorry about the messâ he said, as he closed the door behind the, the pair of them quickly kicking off their shoes
âDoesnât matterâ Martin replied, pushing Dan up against the wall. Dan wrapped his arms around the back of Martinâs neck, bringing him in for a long, slow kiss, as Martin ran his hands down his body, stopping at his thighs. Dan found himself being lifted off the ground a few minutes later, though somehow it seemed like no time at all âOK?â Martin asked, as Daniel managed to wrap his legs around Martinâs waist.
âYeahâ he nodded, before kissing Martin again âYouâre stronger than you lookâ he complimented, starting to worry slightly that Martin would get injured from holding his weight up against the wall.
âI work outâ came the short reply
âItâs certainly paying offâ Dan noted, wandering why they were talking instead of moving things along âOh, and that shirt needs to come offâ he added unbuttoning the dark red shirt that Martin was wearing
âAgreedâ Martin replied, pulling Danâs t-shirt over his head before throwing it on the floor, Dan finding that he didnât particularly care where it landed âAlso, upstairsâ Martin asked, lowering Dan down again, not wanting to risk either of them getting hurt.
âYeahâ Dan said, grabbing Martinâs hand to pull him up the stairs. Danâs room was at the end of the landing, next to the linen closet. It was fairly small in size, a queen sized bed sat in the middle of the room, with a wardrobe in one corner and a bed-side table next to the right hand side of the bed. The second they got into the room, they began pulling of their belts, so that the two them were stood in their underwear
âHolyâŠâ Martin gasped, finally noticing the tattoos that covered Danâs body
âYeahâŠâ Dan replied âBut youâŠyouâre so gorgeous â with those tattoos all over youâ he said, kissing him again, as he moved the two of them around until Martin fell against the bed. It had been nice letting Martin take the lead with things downstairs, but now, now he wanted Martin in his bed, naked, unable to think of anything other than his legs wrapped around Danâs body as he thrusts into him until Martin was screaming his name. âI wanted to kiss you, the first time you walked into the cafĂ©â he confessed, kneeling down by the edge of the bed so that he could pull Martinâs underwear off, as Martin wrapped his arms around him.
âThatâs a lot cleaner than what I had in mindâ Martin confessed, as Dan removed his own underwear
âOh, and what exactly were you thinking?â he asked, as Martin moved up the bed so that his head was on the pillows.
âYou, taking me on that counterâ Martin answered, just as Dan pressed their bodies together
âDo you want that now?â Dan asked, kissing down Martinâs chest âWant me to make you shout my name as you come, for meâ he asked, looking up at Martinâs flushed face once he reached the base of his stomach
âYes, fuck yesâ Martin nodded, urgently âWant you in meâ he panted, trying to breathe normally as Dan kissed the inside of his thigh. After a couple of minutes, Dan grabbed the lube and condom from the draw in the bedside table. âHurry up, this is going to be over embarrassingly quickly otherwiseâ urged Martin as Dan coated his finger with lube
âJust donât want to hurt youâ he replied, giving Dan a slow kiss on the lips âReady?â
âYes, yes just pleaseâ Martin replied, as Dan spread his thighs apart, kissing the inside of the right one as he placed one finger after another inside Martin, letting him adjust to the feeling before moving his hand, managing to make Martin tremble and moan. âI swear, if you donât do something else soonâ
Dan didnât say anything; instead he slowly took his hand away, before covering himself with the condom and lube and moving himself back up Martinâs body so the two of them were face to face as Martin wrapped his legs around Danâs waist, allowing him better access to adjust until he was fully inside of Martin. It took a moment before Martin nodded, letting Dan know that it was OK to move. He started off slow at first, to let Martin get use to the feel
âFaster, fuckâ Martin begged, tightening his legs around Dan pulling him in closer. Dan sped up his pace, until Martin was a moaning mess underneath him, on the verge of coming
âDo it, come for meâ Dan said, kissing Martinâs neck as he let go, Dan following him a few seconds later. Dan slowly pulled out a moment later, before throwing the condom in the waste-paper basket.
âThat wasâŠâ Martin said, still slightly breathless, Dan grabbed a couple of tissues from the bed-side table, in order to wipe the mess from the two of them
âYeahâ Dan agreed, finishing before tossing the tissues away as well, lying back down again so that Martin was wrapped in his arms, with his head against Danâs chest, as the two of them fell asleep.
