A group of people do not automatically make a team. It is even more unlikely that they would automatically create a high-performance one. Creating a high-performance team takes time, effort and nurturing. The whole group has to be dedicated, cooperative and open to continued review. Identifying areas that can be improved should never be seen as faults, they should be seen as learning opportunities and everyone involved should be fully committed to the common goal. Success. The success of the individual and the success of the team which feeds directly into the overall success of the organisation. Fixed mindsets do not advance a group of people into a high-performance team. Open, growth mindsets are required to ensure that the group can evolve together into that high-performance team. As Thomas Reid stated in 1786 “In every chain of reasoning, the evidence of the last conclusion can be no greater than that of the weakest link of the chain, whatever may be the strength of the rest”. On this day in 1965 Kenneth Tynan was the first person to say "FUCK" on British tv (although this is diputed). 4 motions were tabled were tabled in parliament. WHO DOES IT AFFECT AND WHY? Anyone is the short answer and there is no single explanation, however, there are many theories and reasons why it may play such a huge part in the lives of up to 70% of the population. It is believed that personality traits such as anxiety or neuroticism may play a part in the condition. It is also thought that our childhoods may play a role in developing these limiting self-beliefs systems. Highly successful people suffer from imposters syndrome, so the condition doesn’t equate to low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence. It may actually be linked more to perfectionism, especially in women or academics, and may be due to the labels and expectations our parents placed on us, whether they were positive or negative. WHAT CAN YOU DO? The first step you can take is to identify and acknowledge any of these thoughts you may be having and put them into perspective. Reframe these thoughts, for example, to accept that constructive criticism is a valuable tool in helping you to grow and see improvements in your life, career or sport. It is just information after all. Whilst you can't control what people may say, you can control how you react to, and process the information. Reflect on how you would have done things differently, does the information provided make sense and marry up with your own thoughts? If so great, the information was accurate. If not, explore confidently why you wouldn’t make the changes suggested. This will help to improve your self-belief. Talk to someone. Anyone that you trust. This could be a friend, mentor or even a performance coach. Whoever you speak to, they should have your best interests at heart and not approach the conversation in a judgmental way as this could only set you back. Make sure that boundaries are set so that the person providing support asks for permission to share something you might not like. This helps to prepare the brain for the information and you’ll have a higher chance of processing the information with an open mindset allowing for clearer thinking. WHAT IS IT? Imposters syndrome can be explained as a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persists despite evident success. ‘Imposters’ suffer from chronic self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence that override any feelings of success or external proof of their confidence. It can also be described as not belonging in a subjects field and that any success will be rationalised as being down to luck rather than the subjects talent, experience or qualifications. Subjects are unable to internalise accomplishments, however successful they are. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? Subjects can have overwhelming feelings that they are fake and that they are going to be ‘found out’ by peers or other members of the public. Subjects will tend to account for any successes as being down to luck and that their skills played no part in the success. Finally, there are the process goals. These are the bedrock of the whole process. These are the SMART(er) steps where the coachee will realise how much they are going to invest in their progress and their growth. Self-awareness and honest insight are key components as no matter the goal, if these attributes are not making up the bedrock of the process then it has a high chance of failure. If the coachee is not able to achieve any process goals. Then the whole goal-setting process needs to be reviewed and readjusted. Understanding and using the above process sets the different levels of the pyramid apart and helps the coachee avoid the failings they have been experiencing so far. If done properly, energy, confidence and motivation are created which encourages the coachee to continue working towards the goals set. By taking a long term view and using visualisation, a dream goal can be identified. This is the big why. It’s the vision, the purpose, the meaning. It’s what drives the energy and gets the coachee up and out of bed in the morning and raring to go. By setting an end goal it identifies the clear target. It’s the big what. It may not be completely within the control of the coachee (e.g. win a gold medal at next competition, clearly there are other factors involved in winning the gold) but it is a concrete idea or vision that the coachee has aspirations for. Next would be to identify performance goals. These are the tangible milestones mentioned before and are what the coachee believes is necessary to achieve their end goal. The coachee is 100% responsible for achieving them and the outcomes are a direct consequence of how much work has been put into them. Whether in life, sport or business, setting goals is an important process which helps to identify and shape the way progress is to be measured. When used correctly real progress can be achieved in quite a short period of time, it all depends on the set-up of the process and how much the coachee commits to the process. There are many types of goals, short term, medium and long term. Not all coaching or goal setting is effective or successful. This is more than likely down to the approach taken at the outset and how the process is broken down into smaller more manageable chunks which provide tangible milestones. The coachee has to know that they are responsible for setting their own goals and that the success and progress is down to their efforts. If they are set by someone else then the sense of ownership is not achieved. The coachee won’t feel responsible for them and that gives them an out or excuse if the goals are not achieved. By following the GROW model and setting transformative goals re: the goal setting pyramid, ownership is ensured and a clear structure is in place that the coachee can understand.
