something that really fucks with my head:

Shane, while having really BIG hangups about being gay in hockey and in general, intellectually knows it to be okay. Gay marriage is legal in Canada since 2005 - three years before he even met Ilya for the first time. For most of his life, he's known that, if nothing else, his country would back him up. That its allowed to love another man, that its legal, that he will be (more or less) save and protected and has the same rights as anyone else.

Ilya is from Russia. He's not known protection and safety from his country (and even less from his family). He's been growing up knowing something horrible might happen to him if the wrong people find out he is capable of loving a man. Living in Boston must made it a bit better, probably, especially after 2012, when gay marriage became legal in the US. But it also must have hurt - I remember when I saw the news about the supreme court in 2012 (I'm not from the US and it took my country many more years to legalise same sex marriage), I cried. Because it was wonderful, it was magical, it was scary and I was jealous - thinking I might never have that. The pain of a queer person living in a country that would hunt you and put you away, kill you, do anything to undo and erradicate you, is unfathomable.

And still, he is so, sooo brave.

And it kills me not only because I feel deeply connected to this fictional man, but because it's the truth of so many people still. People who are not as lucky as Ilya - finding the right love, being able to hide it so long, having supportive friends and the financial backup to protect themselves in case something happens.

After Hollanov are out I want Shane to get the reputation of the greatest lay in North America. Like, its Helen of Troy and Shane Hollander, hand in hand bewitching people. Ilya may be Russia and the MLH's Greatest Love Machine, but Shane's dick got that man moving to Ottawa. I want the insane money Boston offered to get Ilya to stay leaked and everyone looking at Shane like 👁👄👁

People staring at Shane in the streets like Aphrodite walked past and Ilya is so mad because HE was the one who laid down mad pipe so good Shane married HIM. (He is that good but Ilya got him so there stop staring!)

I need more Ilya out freaking other players when they chirp about his relationship. Some hockey player says "you're just Hollander's little bitch" and he answers "yes we have leash and collar with my name" in such a straight face no one can tell if it's a joke or if he's serious. Or he makes a goal and someone says "does he reward you for being good later" and he says "yeah I'm only allowed to cum when I score".

I mght actually end up writing this if I can figure out better/more examples.
