Shalom and happy Thanksgiving, please consider donating to the mashpee wampanoag tribe in Massachusetts, a tribe that was one of the first to be pushed out of their lands and are often in the fake folklore of the history of Thanksgiving. Currently Massachusetts does not recognize the mashpee wampanoag as a tribal nation and has been trying to steal even more of their land and destroying their culture

Oh just a quick update that in December 2021 the Wampanoag’s tribal status was officially restored! Also a small correction: what was at issue in this case was actually federal, not state, recognition of the nation’s tribal status. My understanding of what happened is that the Mashpee Wampanoag government was looking to exercise their gaming rights by building a casino, and land speculators (from within and outside MA) who wanted their own casino in the Cape Cod area retaliated by instigating an administrative action to take away the federal recognition of their tribal status. The Trump Bureau of Indian Affairs did indeed rescind their federal recognition, in a decision that would have had devastating and far-reaching consequences for a bunch of other Native nations too. A federal judge blocked the administrative decision long enough for the federal government to change hands, at which point the Biden BIA dropped the case and reversed the decision.

None of this is to take away from the original message which I heartily support: please donate to the Mashpee Wampanoag nation!! They are really lovely folks and are working so hard to steward their land and their people, and they have really exciting and vibrant projects like the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project!

And please also check out the National Day of Mourning tomorrow (Nov 24, 2022): this is the first year that it will be livestreamed!

Update For the 'Can I play that?' Project

For those who didn't see my original post, I'm planning on writing a column or even starting my own website for a project called "Can I play that?". Basically my team and I will write articles on different games to assess whether disabled gamers can and can't play them, separated into different types of disabilities too like Auditory, Visual, Motor and Cognitive conditions.

While I've reached out to two game websites to see if I can write this column for them, I haven't heard back from them in weeks, so I've been trying to think of alternatives. I'll probably reach out to more gaming websites to see if I can still write for them, but I might end up making my own website after all. However, I also had another idea alongside that:

Making a "Can I play that?" Project Youtube Channel! I've already been looking at different editing software and microphones to start one, but I obviously can't afford it on my own. Overall I'll need around $327 USD, plus an additional $23 USD a month for a Squarespace account.

this is the one art form I genuinely just cannot get my brain to accept as real. I’ve watched sped-up videos of it being done, read about it, seen in-progress marble statues and I still just can’t get it to sink in or stick. My mind doesn’t want to believe that any person has ever been able to start with a big block and break little bits off of it until it looks like a finely detailed person. At some point it has no recognizable shape and they still know where and how deep they should take a chip out of it that’ll still be the right decision 50,000 fucking chips later?!?

a sheyd (Jewish demon) inspired by two major stylistic influences, Leonard Baskin & Aubrey Beardsley, and also by the #AugustAdiPOSE & #FatArt hashtags on Twitter. the title/text “feygele” is a Yiddish word meaning “little bird” often used as pejorative slang for a queer person – here also playing off the figure’s size & the bird-like attributes of sheydim in folklore. a queer/trans fat Jewish aspiration!

Miniature Incantation Bowl Pendants

these necklaces feature tiny, hand-painted polymer clay reproductions of ancient Jewish magic incantation bowls (sometimes called “demon bowls”). these bowls were created during the period of 300-600 CE by several cultures in the Levant area, though many of the examples that have been recovered are written in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic. they often depict demons bound & chained at the center, surrounded by a spell to “trap” or ward off harmful spirits, and were usually buried under doorways to protect homes.

the clay pendants (around 1.5" in diameter) are colored and textured with natural pigments, then painted with acrylic - the “text” on these miniature reproductions, due to size constraints, is impressionistic rather than a copy of the real spells.
