Thatâs what Iâve been thinking! I actually need to talk about this right now to get it out because itâs been bugging me.
Despite me generally thinking Mark and Eve are alright together, I think itâs just very lukewarm at best, for a lack of a better word. I have many qualmsâŠ
Now I am I aware in the comics Amber has barely any screen time, so Iâll only be referring to the show. I think what made Amber and Mark so endearing was that fact that they actually acted like a couple, Mark would make time to go on dates, he would try to impress her, etc etc. They would act like a couple and less like Mark trauma dumping on Eve every second.
Also there was conflict in Mark and Amberâs relationship. It just felt all the more human? Conflict and disgorgement is natural part of any relationship really, and I think what makes any relationship so strong is being able to be challenged on your own beliefs/morals/ideas and whatnot, which was represented though Mark and Amber!!
The way Amber called out Mark for being a bad boyfriend because he was always so busy, and he just never communicated all that much. However, him being a superhero is what caused this conflict in the first place, and so when he is able to reveal this, they are able to work it out (well albeit, after the whole conflict in between). THATS WHAT MADE IT SOOO GOOD, because it feels earned!! Eve and Mark kinda jus felt inevitable and obvious, we sorta know form the get go they will end up together.
So think this fear to show disagreement is what is making Mark and Eve feel so stale. I genuinely liked that there were disagreements and conflicts between Mark and Amber because they are able to understand eachother better after, make compromises, and all that. However we never truly see this happen between Mark and Eve. Sheâs made agreeable to a fault, and I really leaves a poor taste in my mouth that she isnât allowed to be frustrated that she isnât able to talk about her issues without Markâs getting in the way. (Not saying Iâm dunking on Mark because I gen love him, poor guy has been THROUGH IT), but dear god does the relationship feel so unbalanced.
I think this whole Amber and Mark and Mark and Eve debate is just a product of the poor writing of these two in the show. EVERYONEEE dunked on Amber because she was gen outspoken about her feelings and concerns (which at times felt immature but we HAVE to consider that theyâre highschoolers, theyâre bound to let feelings override logic. Itâs like as if the writers are afraid to let Eve be at fault or be disagreeable as to avoid what happened to Amber, and it realllyy irks me.
I also think Eve was just so much more interesting before the relationship, she had a lot more development I feel, and now this sorta has been sidetracked as her being âjustâ Markâs girlfriend.
My points arenât really all that groundbreaking, I think itâs just accumulative of what Iâve seen other people discuss but manâŠI really want to like Invincible but seeing as how stale some of these characters have gotten, especially the female ones, I really begin to worry about how this would go. (Imagine my horror when they still made Debbie break up with Paul and were hinting that she and Nolan get back together fuckkkk.
