Knots in the Yew Tree is officially out!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
There is only one chapter up so far but the second chapter is already in the works!
This fic features
Severitus! (Adopted not biological)
Platonic Snily
Disabled Snape
Boy-who-lived Neville
Female Harry Potter
Hurt/Comfort
I like to have meaning in my titles. The original fic was Flowers Amongst Thorns, because I wanted to emphasize that thriving despite diversity theme. This one is all about healing. Trees grow knots when they've been damaged and that damage stays with them but they make it theirs and heal it over, making that part of the tree more resilient. And Yew trees are symbolic of death due to them often being planted in graveyards.
I just think that kind of message is really awesome so that's what I went for it.
I can't promise regular updates but if this looks like your kind of read, I'd love it if you guys would take a peek!
One of my early attempts at gouache. It's a Snape. Admittedly, I got frustrated with my gouache and did the details with pencil crayons. Painting is not really my area of expertise.
This is mine, just on my other tumblr
I've been thinking of writing a new Severitus fic.
Well, it's more of a rewrite of a fic I started at 15 years old and gave up on once I lost interest and my life got really busy.
Basically, both fics are playing with the idea of what would change in the story if Harry had been born a girl. My first fic about that is Flowers Amongst Thorns. However, the storyline and characterization felt a lot like an angst fest and I made female Harry too perfect. She wasn't very interesting as a character.
So I started rewriting it and realized I had so many other things that would work better or just be really fun to play with.
So far I've got:
Neville being the boy-who-lived because Voldemort is misogynistic
Snape being an amputee
Lily ending up like Neville's parents in the original
Female Harry being more brainwashed and affected by her upbringing (I still put her with the Dursleys
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I'm doing with it and I haven't posted any chapters or anything yet. Please let me know if a fic like this sounds interesting or if there's anything you've wanted to see done in a Severitus fic.
I'm glad to take any thoughts or feedback into consideration. :)
I was going through my university notes and I have a habit of treating my notes like a diary.
Apparently on January 28th I was wearing a binder for the first time and obviously having a moment. 😅
Hi. I'm GROSSMAN and I'm an artist. I'm just starting to develop my blog, so please rate my art.
It's a blushy lil Snape. I want to boop his nose.
Personally, I think a redemption arc that relies on the character dying as the sole moment of redemption is rarely done well.
Fucking let them work for redemption and let us see the journey. Show us the work. Let them live.
Billy Hargrove is such a high maintenance boy.
Not only does this man wear perfume (cologne or whatever), but he obviously plans out all of his outfits meticulously, shaves his chest hair, works out on the regular, grooms his facial hair and styles his hair.
This man is so intentional about his hygiene and fashion.
Part of me thinks that this is his way of taking control of his life in a small way that makes him feel less powerless.
I also just really love the idea of him standing in front of the mirror, finger curling his hair. There's just something really attractive about a man that cares about how he looks.
How do we think Severus would respond/handle having a chronically ill partner?
I think he'd be incredibly attentive. He'd have potions brewed and available to his partner at all times. Though he'd probably want them to be using a variety of treatments, not just potions. I think that Severus would likely have seen lots of addiction in his life and wouldn't want that for his partner.
I imagine that being a Potions Master requires some medical training, similarly to how a pharmacist needs to have a medical education, at least in Canada where I live.
So he'd have a general knowledge of how to care for a sick/injured person and his affection for his partner would motivate him to be very diligent in caring for them. And if he didn't know much about their specific illness, he would spend an intense amount of time researching until he fully understood it.
I also imagine that Severus is not an especially squeamish person. So if his partner has an illness that is messy or "disgusting", he would bear through it without complaint. If they were dealing with chronic pain, I think that would really bother him. He grew up around people suffering and I think it would remind him of all sorts of horrible stuff. He would offer massages but if he hadn't been with them for a long time, he'd be awkward about it. If they'd been together for a while, he'd make it a very casual thing to offer massages whenever he noticed them in pain.
He'd be very attentive, making sure all their needs are met and quietly staying by their side while they are struggling. I don't see him having a very open and affectionate bedside manner but he would be thoughtful in his care for them. He would likely spend a lot of time with them doing things that wouldn't exert them too much like reading, listening to music, and such.
I feel like he might start prioritizing his partner over himself and keep his problems and struggles to himself, feeling that his partner is already dealing with so much.
Hey, I'm curious what everyone is thinking about who should be cast for Snape in the upcoming TV show.
I know that Adam Driver is a popular fancast but I personally think that he doesn't fit my criteria.
I'm sure he would do wonderful in the show but I just think he's a bit too old (he's 40 and Snape is 31) and also he's an American actor and I'd prefer a British or British-adjacent actor.
So I want to hear who you would cast for Snape if you had the power.
My personal choice is Philippe Spall but I'm not too firm in that. I just saw him in The Witcher and I thought he looked like Snape.
If ya really want s.o. in the age of book Snape:
Benedict Clarke (played the teen Snape)
Gabriel Marques (played the young Snape)
My fav is Adam Driver and yes he would be too old and at the same time Alan Rickman was too old too, so what?
View casting suggestions for Adam Driver, and make your own suggestions for roles you think they should play in upcoming films!
Just to clarify, the reason why I was hoping for an age accurate casting for the majority of characters in the new show is that I think casting older (especially in the cases of James, Lily, and other Marauders Era characters) can diminish the impact of their story.
For example, in the Harry Potter movies they cast people far older for James, Lily and Snape which I think takes away from the impact that James and Lily died at 21. It makes it feel like their tragic end was less tragic. Portraying them as matured adults is a very different thing than portraying them as people who are barely out of their teen years. And also seeing a Snape who doesn't look very old would be a reminder that this guy is still fairly young and a mess.
I'm not trying to be antagonistic, I genuinely would not mind older actors being cast for the roles as I do see the advantage of having experienced actors but I feel it would be a missed opportunity in terms of storytelling.
Thanks for the input, I was so excited to have somebody respond! 😁

Just a lil rant
I haven't posted in forever, mainly because shit keeps happening and i've never been great at keeping up with life to begin with. But here i am.
I have been through a weird ass journey as i went from a 11 year old using books and fanfiction and media as a way to comfort myself to a 20 year old who looks back at the past decade of my life and feels such an intense gratitude for fandom and artists and writers. To all of you who write fanfiction, you are doing something amazing, something life-changing, even if it just seems like you're writing for shits and giggles. You have an impact.
Fanfiction has been an emotional crutch for me for a long time, i have been comforted, reassured, validated and touched by so many wonderful fics. And sometimes i just needed a laugh and once again, the solution was fanfiction.
And crazily enough, fanfiction has helped me develop as a person and discover myself. Absolute insanity in my opinion. But by reading through other people's lenses and reading and reading and reading, i discovered that
a) I'm not straight
b) I'm not cis
c) I'm neurodivergent
d) I did not deserve to be SAed as a kiddo
e) My grief and feelings and all that shit is valid
So thank you, to all the artists and writers and fans and people like me who created a place where i could be safe and express myself. You guys were my therapy.
That scene where Snape drops Harry's potion on the floor and says "oops" is all the reasoning I need to firmly believe Snape's animagus is a cat.
Okay so my comfort characters are Severus Snape and Deadpool.
I created the both of them in the sims and I expected chaos.
Instead I got Deadpool with his family of 6 chickens and two besties who bond over cooking.... I'm done. 🤣
I did a little skit for drama class.
I tried really hard to make it good but it's still really hard to watch. I've been told it's great.
Hey, question about boarding school. Do teachers also sleep on campus?
No. They live in nearby towns. Some even live down the street. We have deans who supervise us during non-school hours. Some of the deans live in the school (which is very convenient for pranking). The deans are like our substitute parents but they act more like older siblings.
I was given a Snape doll for Christmas.
I guess I ranted about him enough that they figured I'd love to own a miniature version of him.
...and I do.
Can't wait for school to start so I can perch this angry bloke on my desk and have him stare disapprovingly at me while I do homework.
Actually, I can wait schoolwork sucks. 😡
Ps. I go to boarding school. Anyone interested in hearing about how that works?
